17 year olds review of WILD WILD WEST!

Children of the Wild West follows the daily lives of children on the trails of the old west. From migrating to building, this book covers everything you might want to know about children in the west.

In this book several stories are created to give a feel for what it was like to live as a child during the times when the West was still "Wild". These stories, sometimes, makes you feel like you're right there on the dusty trail hunting down a pack of escaped cattle. It also gives you the chance to judge the right and wrongs of these times on your own.

It was interesting that the book also covered Native Americans in the West. It was enthralling to read about the boarding schools which Native Americans had to go to, and the harsh treatment in which they were forced to endure. This gives the book a more well rounded feel and makes it much more interesting.

Overall Children of the Wild West is a very good book about the lives of growing children in the West. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a light read on the subject.

How Immigrant & Indian Children Lived (Starting ~ 1841)

Russell Freedman did an exceptional job with this book; it zeroes in on the immigrant children’s’ experience of going West as well as the indigenous Indian children’s lives before, during and after interaction with the white settlers.

The photos selected were exceptional and eye-opening. My favorite aspect of the photos selected centered on the variety of tribal children photographed. I don’t think I will ever forget the two sets of photos of Indian children as they entered Indian Training Schools (schools that taught Indians how to become white) and how they had changed 14 or 15 months later. There was no spark of joy or happiness in any of these ‘chosen’ children.

Most books talk about the life in the US and the Territories from an adult’s perspective. This volume focuses on life amongst the younger population; it is wonderful.

Corb and Loos

An excellent book! Very well documented with plans, sections, elevations and models. The models are especially informative because they are primarily section models that illustrate the spatial differences between Corb and Loos. The book also dispell the misconception that Corb's houses were white. The original color schemes of the various houses are displayed in the models. A great book for students of theses two giants.

Astounding collection of Loos' and Corb's domestic work

Comparing the houses of Corb and Loos is an interesting thesis, and the interpreting essays by Max Risselada, Stanislaus von Moos, Johan van de Beek, Arjan Hebly, and Beatriz Colomina is great scholarship. But the plans, sections, and other diagrams for all of the projects that are included are just terrific. This book is a treasure chest of Corb's and Loos' domestic work. There can't be a more complete collection of Loos' work anywhere, and reading his plans is like reading a book. I can spend hours looking at them.

Fascinating Though it Seriously Needs Editing

I found many of Robert Feather’s ideas quite fascinating. He studies many aspects of the Exodus story, like the Tabernacle, Copper Serpent, etc., but the main point centers on his identification of site of Mt. Sinai, the place “where Moses stood” to receive the Ten Commandments.

He makes the case for a place called Solomon’s Pillars in Timna Valley at the southern edge of Israel’s border. I came away convinced that this is the most likely site for the event. He also identifies Merneptah as the Pharoah of the Exodus who died by drowning.

He offers several interesting theories, though many of them are obviously speculative. I ended up giving the book three stars because the manuscript went to press too soon. It really needs an editor. He is often not clear. Sometimes he even seems to contradict himself. And there are so many mistakes. The author assured me that the second edition will be much cleaner. As it is, Feather has thrown so many things into the book that just don’t belong there. It’s easy to get bogged down with so many rabbit trails that the main points can get lost.

Aside from these problems, I’m glad I got to read it at this early stage, even if it’s not quite ready for the public.

This mammoth volume (over 670 pages) truly is the Indians' own book. Natalie Curtis served as collector, editor, and arranger. The elegant and eloquent simplicity of the tales give testimony that these are the Native American's own words. Not only that, but since it was first published in 1905, these are the memories of chiefs, elders, and holy men that still remembered the old days and the old ways. Plus, the marvelous illustrations were all done by tribe members (except for the photographs) and really contribute to the overall magic of the whole. The songs are all authentic and are given in both English and the original tribal languages (with pronunciation guides.)
While not a comprehensive reference of all the tribes it does give a good range of peoples from the eastern coast, northern woodlands, plains, southwest, and pacific coast. The tribes included are: Wabanaki, Dakota, Pawnee, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Winnebago, Kwakiutl, Pima, Apache, Mohave-Apache, Yuma, Navaho, Zuni, San Juan, Acoma, Laguna, and Hopi.
This book is a great monument to all the peoples and their respective ways of life. It is proof that the social engineers and bureaucrats did not kill the spirit and culture of the rightful caretakers of this land. As long as such a book exists the way back to the old, centered way of living can be backtracked.
This is a moving book. Even Theodore Roosevelt was moved by the "depth and dignity" of Indian thought.

The seventh edition, like previous editions, begins with individuals in organizations, then looks at groups and teams, and finally considers the nature of the organization itself. Reads like a textbook

This book is required reading for a Masters level course, which is the only way it will ever get read. In a subject area bulging at the seams with real-life, practical hindsight, this book truely shows the difference between academia and those working stiffs who are just trying to make a living.
I will say one thing however - the teacher made the class enjoyable. I was sitting there in class one evening, enjoying the reparte between student and teacher, when I realized:
"Hey! I'm actually learning something here."

Old style type and graphics, writing doesn't flow.

It's not a book that makes you want to read it, I find myself just skimming through it. The author can barely go a page without mentioning "the dot-com global workplace", I find that very annoying. There are some interesting case studies but she doesn't give any suggested outcomes so the reader is left wondering what is the best course of action.

Excessive examples, choppy writing, poor proofreading

The book provides useful diagnostic tools and challenging activities and case studies. However, the writing style of the author is poor and very choppy, making it difficult to follow the material. The author uses an excessive amount of real-world examples, but does little justice to covering and explaining the theory and concepts of the subject material.
I purchased a used 7th edition of this text book through Amazon.com. The pervious owner of my book (a student, I assume) noted several errors in the book. For example, in Chapter 3, "The Diverse Workforce:...", page 81, heading "INDIVIDUAL VALUES AND ATTITUDES", subheading "Values", paragraph 2, sentence 1, the published text states:
"Core values are more susceptible to change, and peripheral values are less susceptible (to change)."
However, the sentence in my text book was manually corrected by the previous owner (at the direction of an instructor at another educational institution, I assume) to read:
"Core values are less susceptible to change, and peripheral values are more susceptible (to change)."
When I first read the sentence, I could not agree with what the author had stated. So I did a search on Google.com and verified from other sources that the author had incorrectly stated this premise.
In Chapter 9, Activity 9-5 Behavior Description Questionnaire, page 319, the book provides a table for scoring a 30 statement behavior questionnaire. The activity requires one to select between an A or B statement which is characteristic of their own behavior. However, item number 6 in the scoring table shows two A answers, and item number 7 in the scoring table shows two B answers, making it impossible to obtain an accurate assessment of one's behavior pattern, unless one is able to clearly understand the subject material and correct the scoring table.
These are just a few of the errors noted in the 7th edition of this publication. It appears the author has not adequately proofread the final product.

About the Author
Richard Schaffer is a Professor Emeritus of Business Law in the Department of Finance of the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. He taught for twenty-five years in the areas of business law, international business transactions, and the law of international trade and investment, and founded the university's international business and business study abroad programs. Prior to academia, Professor Schaffer worked with the United Nations examining the relationship between corrupt practices, multinational corporations, and socio-economic development, and also served as rapporteur of UN working groups on international economic crime. He has consulted to business schools and industry trade groups, as well as businesses. Professor Schaffer received his J.D. from the University of Mississippi and his LL.M. from New York University.

Filiberto Agusti is a partner in the international law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP, where he has practiced law since 1978. He represents governments, multinational corporations, manufacturers, and investors in international arbitrations, lawsuits between multinational enterprises, and transactional negotiations. His work involves disputes and negotiations over international infrastructure, power generation facilities, cross-border corporate acquisitions, international joint ventures, and bankruptcy reorganizations. Mr. Agusti has authored articles for the Harvard Law Review and other legal publications, is a frequent speaker at professional seminars around the world, and regularly comments on legal issues on camera for Univision, Telemundo, and CNN en Espanol. Mr. Agusti was a law clerk to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Lucien Dhooge is the Sue and John Staton Professor of Law at the College of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he teaches international business law and ethics, and serves as director of the global executive M.B.A. program and area coordinator in law and ethics. Prior to his tenure with the Georgia Institute of Technology, Professor Dhooge practiced law for eleven years and served on the faculty of the University of the Pacific in California for twelve. He has authored more than fifty scholarly articles, co-authored five books, and is a past editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal and Journal of Legal Studies Education. Professor Dhooge has presented throughout the United States, as well as in Asia, Europe, and South America, and has received numerous research and teaching awards, including six Ralph C. Hoeber Awards for excellence in published research. After completing an undergraduate degree in history at the University of Colorado, Professor Dhooge earned his J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law and his LL.M. from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Read it because you have to, not because it's worth reading.

Poorly written. Sentence structure is horrible, making for a very difficult read. Besides that, there are many errors throughout the book (so many that I've lost count). Sentences that just end mid-sentence, words randomly hyphenated, words without a space between the next word, etc. Whoever proofread this book should be fired.

This book is barely being held together. The binding is falling apart and it is in terrible condition. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to use it without it becoming completely dismembered.

About the Author
R.J. Godlewski (GOD LESS KEY) is an independent counterterrorism consultant, the director of the private International Nuclear Emergency Response Team [INERT], and the author of several novels, commentaries, and professional articles. He is the author and architect of the Web-based Independent Counterterrorist training program. He is currently a graduate student at American Military University completing his M.A. in Military Studies, Asymmetrical Warfare concentration, and graduate certificate in Security Management. Mr. Godlewski holds a B.A. in Intelligence Studies, Terrorism Studies concentration with a minor degree in Area Studies – Middle East with honors from American Military University. He further holds an undergraduate certificate in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and is a veteran of both the United States Navy and Navy Reserve. Not worth the money

I gave this book two stars, because I turned the final page with only slightly more knowledge about the subject of professional killers or assassins than what I started with. The information Mr. Godlewski provides readers could be deduced by most discerning, analytical minds. In the end, it's likely not worth the money to purchase and ship this book to your door.

Mr. Godlewski states up front that this is not a "How to" book on becoming an assassin but is best read by military and law enforcement personnel with a mind to understand their quarry, professional killers. While this is a noble goal, the author paints only the broadest of strokes over the subject and fails to provide the necessary tools, knowledge, or even investigative tips or ideas in pursuing such a person, nor does he provide any case-studies that may shed light on pursuit. His conclusion fails to tie together or even expand upon earlier information. Instead he tends to move off on tangents about society at large from abortions to video games and television.

So what might one learn from reading Skills of the Assassin? In simplistic terms, assassins need to disguise themselves amongst the population at large; must have a cover that affords travel; must be even better at laundering money; must be meticulous planners; must be extremely security-aware; and a few interesting excerpts from the Al-Qaeda manual. Nothing Earth-shattering.

The author could have expounded upon some of his graphics on human development or money laundering that would have made for interesting insights into the mind of an assassin. Analogous Counter Terrorism investigations that follow money trails could have been used to point investigators or other professionals to this rich investigative area. Finally, more detailed discussion of tradecraft would have been immensely helpful to the professional without turning this into a "how to" guide.

Of less importance, I did not care for the informal tone of the author's writing or the very large font and spacing used throughout the book. The generally unscholarly tone of the book was a distraction to me and hurt the credibility of the author. While the author does cite several well-respected experts in their field, he cited himself at least 12 times (I would guess that makes for at least over 30% of his citations). He fails to adequately explain some of the included charts and graphics within his text. The artwork adorning the back of the book, a geared up agent or soldier with night vision goggles and what looks like a Sig Sauer handgun, runs completely contrary to the author's point within the book about special ops soldiers not falling into the category of assassins. The artwork, more significantly, detracts from the seriousness of the book.

This "book" would have been better received as a pamphlet, serving as a primer or introductory reading to a more in-depth class or seminar, and should have been priced accordingly. Bottom line, not a recommended read.

It seemed to me less a professional or academically-sound read than more akin to something that used to be a popular genre of literature with readers of Soldier of Fortune magazine back in the 70s and 80s. It doesn't seem particularly well researched, serious, nor does it actually address what defines an assassin. One reviewer referenced the "Hitman" book that cause a bit of a controversy several decades ago. The term "assassin" is a sexy one, to be sure, but this book is not really a soundly reasoned discussion on that - it is more of a general approach to the old "hitman" idea, updated for this more modern era. I didn't feel it added really much to anything, other than something a survivalist might have on his bookshelf alongside "Five Finger Death Strikes" and other such tomes. There is a growing body of academic and professional literature on two concepts that this book could have focused on, but failed to do so. The first are the hired hitmen used by Russian mafias, Mexican cartels, etc (these are not assassins, just hired thugs). The second are true "assassins" - the people who are either hired or otherwise motivated to conduct the killings of political figures - this second category being the only valid academic/professional application of this term. This book, unfortunately, does not really expand the knowledge base of either concept, but rather focuses on the general 70s-80s "hitman" idea, and cannot really be taken too seriously. I suppose of you are just looking for a fun kind of read to kill some time (pardon the pun) and if you think this activity is "fun" reading, then I guess it might be worth looking into. But, it should not be viewed (having unfortunately purchased this myself as a former IC intel analyst and current think tank researcher focusing on Active Shooters) as really anything more than something one could cobble together based on reading the news and mixed with a bit of imagination. I gave it two stars, instead of one, as it does (as mentioned) make for a decent read as far as mind-candy if you are going on vacation or have a long plane flight ahead, etc. Like a romance novel for women, it's a decent "beach read" that might prove mildly entertaining. I think, in all honesty, the author should consider writing a novel based on this subject, rather than approaching this as non-fiction.

An Overview

The book is written to show the premis that you have to think like your enemy if you want to beat him. Its not a bad read but the subject matter has been covered in other texts and while entertaining and sometimes informative, its not the last word on the topic. I'm kind of surprised to see it after the uproar from the book "Hitman" some years ago. If you have a few bucks and want to add it to your library its not too bad.
