Shepherd, a calligrapher and writer (The Art of the Handwritten Note), covers almost every type of social or intimate situation, including how to make introductions, requests, apologies, and a variety of tips for speaking with children, elderly people and in-laws. Shepherd also addresses those difficult moments when we all have trouble knowing what to say: she advocates first checking when a bedridden friend will welcome visitors and allowing a seriously ill person the freedom to express anger at his or her condition. Not all will agree with her argument that it's appropriate to speak in a louder voice to someone whose first language is not English. Some of the author's 10 rules of conversation are obvious, while others seem based on her own likes and dislikes. And some standard rules that she reiterates—such as not speaking about religion or politics—have loosened up a bit in recent years. (Dec. 27)

Useful book for awkward but aspiring introverts

This is a great book for any person who wants to operate smoothly in a our modern "networking" society, but is not sure of the best thing to say in all situations. This book gives you ways to get into, through, and out of all kinds of social conversations. I just wish I had read this book when I was much younger. This book will be my new high school graduation gift, as the ability to converse using this book's recommended methods will help any person greatly in life, both personally and professionally. This book is outstanding for anyone looking for ways of smoothing their social graces, and should prove invaluable for any person who might have become a bit too reliant on a gadget for communication and feels a bit lost when trapped with people face-to-face.

So far (4 chapters in) I like what Shepherd has to say and find it very helpful and educational. My only discomfort is that she doesn't provide any other way or opinion than her own. There is always another perspective, especially with the nuances of people. I do like that she has chapters about talking to men, young, and older.

I am surprised that this concise and eloquent book is not better known, and I'm baffled by some of the lukewarm reviews. This really is a beautiful collection of scenarios and responses and a mindset for approaching conversations and relationships.

I cannot think of a single person I know who would not benefit from reading this. In fact, I think I will buy a few extra copies to hand out as gifts. I have only ever done that for one other book.

About the Author

Jay Heizer

Professor Emeritus, the Jesse H. Jones Chair of Business Administration, Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, Texas. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of North Texas and his Ph.D. in Management and Statistics from Arizona State University.

 

He was previously a member of the faculty at the University of Memphis, the University of Oklahoma, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Richmond. He has also held visiting positions at Boston University, George Mason University, the Czech Management Center, and the Otto-Von-Guericka University, Magdeburg.

 

Dr. Heizer’s industrial experience is extensive. He learned the practical side of operations management as a machinist apprentice at Foringer and Company, as a production planner for Westinghouse Airbrake, and at General Dynamics, where he worked in engineering administration. In addition, he has been actively involved in consulting in the OM and MIS areas for a variety of organizations, including Philip Morris, Firestone, Dixie Container Corporation, Columbia Industries, and Tenneco. He holds the CPIM certification from APICS—the Association for Operations Management.

 

Professor Heizer has co-authored 5 books and has published more than 30 articles on a variety of management topics. His papers have appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Purchasing, Personnel Psychology, Production & Inventory Control Management, APICS—The Performance Advantage, Journal of Management History, IIE Solutions, and Engineering Management, among others. He has taught operations management courses in undergraduate, graduate, and executive programs.

 

Barry Render

Professor Emeritus, the Charles Harwood Professor of Operations Management, Crummer Graduate School of Business, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. He received his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics at Roosevelt University, and his M.S. in Operations Research and Ph.D. in Quantitative Analysis at the University of Cincinnati.

 

He previously taught at George Washington University, University of New Orleans, Boston University, and George Mason University, where he held the Mason Foundation Professorship in Decision Sciences and was Chair of the Decision Sciences Department. Dr. Render has also worked in the aerospace industry for General Electric, McDonnell Douglas, and NASA.

 

Professor Render has co-authored 10 textbooks for Prentice Hall, including Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets, Quantitative Analysis for Management, Service Management, Introduction to Management Science, and Cases and Readings in Management Science. Quantitative Analysis for Management, now in its 11th edition, is a leading text in that discipline in the United States and globally. Dr. Render’s more than 100 articles on a variety of management topics have appeared in Decision Sciences, Production and Operations Management, Interfaces, Information and Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, IIE Solutions, and Operations Management Review, among others.

 

Dr. Render has been honored as an AACSB Fellow and was twice named a Senior Fulbright Scholar. He was Vice President of the Decision Science Institute Southeast Region and served as Software Review Editor for Decision Line for six years and as Editor of the New York Times Operations Management special issues for five years. From 1984 to 1993, Dr. Render was President of Management Service Associates of Virginia, Inc., whose technology clients included the FBI, the U.S. Navy, Fairfax County, Virginia, and C&P Telephone. He is currently Consulting Editor to Financial Times Press.

 

Dr. Render has taught operations management courses in Rollins College’s MBA and Executive MBA programs. He has received that school’s Welsh Award as leading Professor and was selected by Roosevelt University as the 1996 recipient of the St. Claire Drake Award for Outstanding Scholarship. In 2005, Dr. Render received the Rollins College MBA Student Award for Best Overall Course, and in 2009 was named Professor of the Year by full-time MBA students.

 

Chuck Munson

Professor of Operations Management, Carson College of Business, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. His received his BSBA summa cum laude in finance, along with his MSBA and Ph.D. in operations management, from Washington University in St. Louis. For two years, he served as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in Business at Washington State. He also worked for three years as a financial analyst for Contel Telephone Corporation.

 

Professor Munson serves as a senior editor for Production and Operations Management, and he serves on the editorial review board of four other journals. He has published more than 25 articles in such journals as Production and Operations Management, IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Naval Research Logistics, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, and Annals of Operations Research. He is editor of the book The Supply Chain Management Casebook: Comprehensive Coverage and Best Practices in SCM, and he has co-authored the research monograph Quantity Discounts: An Overview and Practical Guide for Buyers and Sellers. He is also coauthor of Managerial Decision Modeling with Spreadsheets (fourth edition), published by Pearson Press.

 

Dr. Munson has taught operations management core and elective courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. levels at Washington State University (WSU). He has also conducted several teaching workshops at international conferences and for Ph.D. students at Washington State University. His major awards include being a Founding Board Member of the Washington State University President’s Teaching Academy (2004); winning the WSU College of Business Outstanding Teaching Award (2001 and 2015), Research Award (2004), and Service Award (2009 and 2013); and being named the WSU MBA Professor of the Year (2000 and 2008).

The book arrived on time, but the cover was different. However, I was able to use the book for one of my classes because the content was completely the same in the copy that I received and the copy that I saw on the website. I plan to buy more textbooks from you in the future, but make sure that the cover of the book matches with the one shown in the picture. Other than that, I was pleased with my book arriving on time.

According to Wendell Gauthier, the flamboyant Louisiana attorney who played a key role in suing tobacco companies, the plaintiffs' bar serves as a de facto "fourth branch" of government, achieving by litigation what lobbying prevents through legislation. The authors chronicle Gauthier's last crusade (Abel was a partner of the now deceased lawyer) against America's firearms manufacturers. The book describes how policy is shaped in the legislatures and courtrooms of the country, and the picture is unsettling. As portrayed by the authors, the process is characterized by equal doses of cynicism, ego, pragmatism and money. The story begins in New Orleans with the murder of gospel singer Raymond Myles, which spurred Mayor Marc Morial and Gauthier to initiate the first civil action by a municipality against gun manufacturers. Yet this book is ultimately a story of the NRA's profound political influence. Although some subsequent civil suits against guns remain active, most have been dismissed. Furthermore, as the authors recount, a settlement negotiated with gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson by the Clinton administration has been eviscerated by the Bush administration. While hardly a model of journalistic objectivity, the book presents a lively take on how business does, or doesn't, get done in the legislatures of the country.

This book is poorly written. The precepts it seeks to promote are unrealistic and vague, sort of the 'I just think!' quality which is a sure sign that the person presenting the idea has long ago made up their mind.

One of the hammering points they come to is that Automobiles are far more regulated than guns... they neglect to mention however that even with those regulations, licenses, restrictions we kill each other with the things at a rate of about one hundred to one over guns.
'But those are accidents' a reader might think...
1. not always, automobiles are weapon of choice of a HIGH percentage of murders committed by women!

and

2. so are a goodly percentage of firearm deaths...

'but that's DIFFERENT!.'

No not really.

As far as the knee-jerking about children getting killed with guns; they fail as most of these things do to cite the faxct that more kids are 'killed' by backyard pools than firearms and no one is advocating removal of those.

The anti-gun nuts are every bit as crazy as the gun nuts as this poorly constructed bit of propaganda demonstrates

This book is outdated Bloomberg spent more money promoting gun control in a year than the NRA spent in 10 years. The fact of matter is the NRA is an organization made up of nearly 5 million members. (2014) The reason they are outgunned is that these nearly 5 million members vote. Additionally, their are many other anti-gun organization that together spend much more than the NRA.

Laughable ineptitude from a journalist and lawyer regarding the NRA's power

Besides all the incorrect and alarmist-type rhetoric these two people spout out, it's just "Business As Usual" from the anti-gun lobby. Their arguments or [facts] are absolutely misinformed. Whenever you get a pair of incompetents trying to explain a subject or subjects they know very little of; you get a comic book style dissertation that only confirms to Americans that most journalists are liberal nuts, with no common sense.
