Two generations and counting...

I wish this would come back in print, and (as usual with the Scary books), I wish they would issue them complete and unabridged! The Animals Merry Christmas is a tender and touching collection of stories about children for whom Christmas is at risk. As always, Scary's characters are anthropomorphized animals, whose dilemmas bridge the divide between species. His characters long for a specific toy, long for love, long to be needed. As children we begged for these stories again and again. I bought a used copy for my son, and now he does too!

About the Author
Matthew Morris has worked with the Oracle database since 1996 when he worked in the RDBMS support team for Oracle Support Services. Employed by Oracle for over eleven years in support and development positions, Matthew was an early adopter of the Oracle Certified Professional program. He was one of the first one hundred Oracle Certified Database Administrators (version 7.3) and was also in the first hundred to become an Oracle Certified Forms Developer. In the years since, he has upgraded his Database Administrator certification for releases 8i, 9i, 10G and 11G, added the Application Express and the Oracle SQL Expert certifications and is an Oracle Advanced PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional. Outside of Oracle, he has CompTIA certifications in Linux+ and Security+. Matthew is an experienced Database Administrator and PL/SQL developer and has been creating Web applications with Oracle Application Express since the early days of its release. He is currently employed as a Database Engineer with Computer Sciences Corporation developing enterprise applications

The book contains the bare-bone outline of what you would need to pass the exam. It is surely not enough if you did not have any prior knowledge on the exam topics. The greatest disadvantage as with all other Mr. Morris' preparation guides is complete absence of control questions and tasks. The text is poorly edited, and large chunks of it are just excerpts from respective section of Oracle documentation, sometimes with slight re-wording, sometimes plain copies.
On the positive side is that the job of Oracle docs compilation is done for you. It would be much better if the author included references, or at least Oracle document titles.
The other positive feature is the book's brevity, but depending on your level and attitude it might be a deficiency as well.
All in all what you paid is what you get - the main thing is to understand that this is preparation GUIDE, not the book covering 150% of information you need. For me it worked

THE BEST BOOK to learn basic Travis Picking

A great book for guitar players who want to learn Travis picking. It covers all the basics with good song examples. I've tried a lot of books and Mark Hanson's instruction style is right on the money. He starts out giving you accompaniment only examples to support a song being sung and finally has you doing a melodic version of a great blues tune. The included CD shows you what it's supposed to sound like. Once I got through this book I went on to his "Art of Solo Fingerpicking" which takes you to the next level, i.e. playing melody with your Travis style accompaniment.

There are instruction books - and then there's Mark Hanson

If you have been playing guitar for a bit and have learned the standard 5-6 chords, but are no longer satisfied, then this book can get you to the next level.
Fifteen years ago, I picked up this book and tape set after a year of strumming away at Beatle, Dylan, etc.. tunes. It provided a simple and enjoyable entry into learing fingerstyle guitar. I have bought dozens of other guitar books and can say that this one was the best 'teaching' book I read. No jargon, no complicated charts, just a few simple practice patterns and some fun tumes to play. Also don't miss the companion book The Art of Solo Fingerpicking, which picks up right where this one leaves off. I still get a lot of kudos when I play the The Art of Solo Fingerpicking tunes to other musicians. No doubt, the best two book music instruction set I ever bought.

Comprehensive and Easy to Follow

This book has easy-to-follow instructions and enjoyable songs to play. I am only 1/3 of the way through this book, and thoroughly enjoying it. It has some familiar and not-so-familiar folk standards, leading the player through basic patterns first, then adding variations, melodies, ornaments and finally culminating in a full fingerstyle selection that will challenge almost any player at any level. However Mark Hanson gives you all the tools you need to get there, in step-by-step detail. The book would be great without the CD, but the added audio instruction is also extremely helpful. I recommend this to anyone interested in fingerpicking and fingerstyle guitar.

About the Author
Pankaj Dubey was born in Chaibasa, Jharkhand. He travelled to Delhi and to Europe for higher studies. Between living in a dingy flat in Mukherjee Nagar, New Delhi, with four IAS aspirants and becoming the paying guest of a toilet cleaner in Coventry, England, he thinks he has seen it all. Pankaj was awarded the Navodit Lekhak Award by the Hindi Academy (Government of Delhi) for penning down creative ways to waste time during one s college life in the campus in his story called Mukhauta . His humour expedition continued in the Coventry University in West Midlands, England where he did his master s in applied communications.

About the Author

Aaron T. Woland, CCIE No. 20113, is a principal engineer within Cisco’s technical marketing organization and works with Cisco’s largest customers all over the world. His primary job responsibilities include secure access and identity deployments with ISE,

solution enhancements, standards development, and futures. Aaron joined Cisco in 2005 and is currently a member of numerous security advisory boards and standards body working groups. Prior to joining Cisco, Aaron spent 12 years as a consultant and technical trainer. His areas of expertise include network and host security architecture and implementation, regulatory compliance, virtualization, as well as route-switch and wireless. Technology is certainly his passion, and Aaron currently has two patents in pending status with the United States Patent and Trade Office. Aaron is the author of the Cisco ISE for BYOD and Secure Unified Access book (Cisco Press) and many published whitepapers and design guides. Kevin Redmon is the youngest of 12 siblings and was born in Marion, Ohio. Since joining Cisco in October 2000, Kevin has worked closely with several Cisco design organizations; as a firewall/VPN customer support engineer with the Cisco Technical Assistant Center; as a systems test engineer in BYOD Smart Solutions Group; and now as a systems test engineer in the IoT Vertical Solutions Group in RTP, NC with a focus on the connected transportation systems. Besides co-authoring this book with Aaron Woland, Kevin is also the author of the Cisco Press Video Series titled Cisco Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Networking LiveLessons. He has a bachelor of science in computer engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a master of science in information security from East Carolina University, as well as several Cisco certifications. Best Cisco Certification Book I've read!

I am already CCNA (2 books), CCNP R&S (4 books), CCDA (1 book), CCDP (1 book) and CCNA Security (1 book) certified. The reason why I'm bringing this number is because CCNP Sec SISAS 300-208 was the best Cisco Cert book I've read!

#1 - it is fun... the book is very engaging and the flow of the reading is reeeeeeally smooth!
#2 - fun is not enough! The CONTENT of the book is really easy to understand, yet crucial for passing the Cert.

I've passed my exam today and basically all I used was the book with a Lab (ISE 1.2 + 3560-E switch + PC) to practice.

This will cover most of what's on the exam

This covers about 85% of what the certification exam covers. There are other Cisco products that this book does not reference or cover that are on the exam. In fairness to the author, some of these other things aren't listed on the exam topics either.

Good stuff!

This book is great - covers all the topics needed for the exam, I like how Aaron throws in some jabs and jokes in the book, if you like security topics then this will keep you going. Took the exam today and did very well main study source was this book and some prior experience with ISE, lots of good stuff in this book!

One of the classic books on liquids and liquid mixtures. Even though it is old it should stand on every researchers bookshelf. It is a good reference book and presents basic ideas in a very clear way!

I agree with the other guy!

I had to bought this book for a class I'm attending. I first read the preview available for this book and I was kind of nervous to buy this book but I had no choice, it was necessary. The only thing I want to say is that book should not be consulted except if it is really necessary... There is virtually no links between the parts of chapters and even between the chapters. You never know what the author is trying to explain. The information is always partial, there is plenty of references to paliated this lack of usefull information. Nevertheless, I think that it is not to complicated to understand. This is mainly why I have deceided to give it 2 stars. I strongly not recommend this book to anyone: students, teachers and professionnals. There must be many better book out there! In fact, I don't think that any book can be worst. I haven't read all the book yet but I'm pretty sure that the last chapters won't be more exciting than the first half.

Holy cow! Over-rated!

This book was horrible. It was either too complex, or much too simplistic. There was no measure of explanation on the connections between the various subjects, and no tying in of the various concepts 'learned'... This was bad... DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

Here he lays siege to the food industry and scientists' attempts to reduce food and the cultural practices of eating into bite-size concepts known as nutrients, and contemplates the follies of doing so. As an increasing number of Americans are overfed and undernourished, Pollan makes a strong argument for serious reconsideration of our eating habits and casts a suspicious eye on the food industry and its more pernicious and misleading practices. Scott Brick, who narrated Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, carries forward the same tone and consistency, thus creating a narrative continuity between the two books. Berkeley, California-based journalism professor and New York Times Magazine contributing writer Michael Pollan, whose previous work on the subject includes The Botany of Desire and the best-selling The Omnivore’s Dilemma, has placed himself at the forefront of food writing. He preaches a back-to-basics approach and a close questioning of the avalanche of information that has come out of our diet-obsessed society. Despite the accusations of a few critics as being a little alarmist, a little elitist, and a little obvious (not everyone has the access to or the resources to eat the food Pollan suggests), the book encourages a simple approach to eating that will strike a chord with readers weary of conflicting information and unrealistic weight-loss and wellness programs. So the message of the book and its well-written delivery can’t be faulted. The question is, do we need to hear it all again?

We truly are what we eat . . . . . or don't eat

Americans are fat.

Who's to blame? The government. Ay, but there's the rub. If the government undoes its mischievous agricultural subsidies, voters in farm states will throw the rascals out of office. Look what happened to Sen. John McCain in Iowa because he wants to end ethanol subsidies. No politician can afford to be public spirited instead of self-centered. The cure is not in government.

Instead, an intelligent solution begins with this book. Pollan goes to the heart of the matter, which is the content of our food. Our consumer society is based on making attractive products. For food, this means added sugar or added fat.

To quote Pollan: ". . . we're eating a whole lot more, at least 300 more calories a day than we consumed in 1985. What kind of calories? Nearly a quarter of these additional calories come from added sugars (and most of that in the form of high-fructose corn syrup); roughly another quarter from added fat . . . "

These extra calories are from nutrient-deficient food. It began with refined flour in the 1870s which removed bran and wheat germ to produce long-lasting snowy white flour. Consumers loved it because flour no longer turned rancid, and it didn't become infected with bugs.

Okay. Why didn't bugs chomp down on this new flour? Quite simply because the nutrients, the bran, wheat germ, carotene, were gone. Pollan explains, ". . . this gorgeous white powder was nutritionally worthless, or nearly so. Much the same is now true for corn flour and white rice." Take a look at a package of white flour and count the additives that make up for the loss of natural ingredients. Then you'll understand the basic thrust of this book and its remedies.

How do refined carbohydrates affect us? They are implicated in several chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

This book outlines those problems and practical solutions to the lack of nutrients and excess of fat and sugar in our daily food. Quite simply, good health is often less a matter of miracle medicines than of common sense meals. Pollan outlines the problem and offers solutions, as indicated in a University of Minnesota study of natural ingredients in wheat which concluded, "This analysis suggests that something else in the whole grain protects against death."

Protects against death? Did that get your interest? If so, this book is truly a major step toward a much healthier lifestyle . . . . . merely by changing the foods you eat.

It’s packed with Big Ideas and expansive wisdom.

That, more or less, is the short answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated and confusing question of what we humans should eat in order to be maximally healthy.

I hate to give away the game right here at the beginning of a whole book devoted to the subject, and I’m tempted to complicate matters in the interest of keeping things going for a couple hundred more pages or so. I’ll try to resist, but will go ahead and add a few more details to flesh out the recommendations. Like, eating a little meat isn’t going to kill you, though it might be better to approach it as a side dish than as a main. And you’re better off eating whole fresh foods rather than processed food products. That’s what I mean by the recommendation to ‘eat food,’ which is not quite as simple as it sounds. For while it used to be that food was all you could eat, today there are thousands of other edible foodlike substances in the supermarket. These novel products of food science often come in packages elaborately festooned with health claims, which brings me to another, somewhat counterintuitive, piece of advice: If you’re concerned about your health, you should probably avoid products that make health claims. Why? Because a health claim on a food product is a strong indication it’s not really food, and food is what you want to eat.

An easy read. Interesting political history of "Big Food" and ...

An easy read. Interesting political history of "Big Food" and how they are able to kill us for their profit. My problem with the book is the end. No, zip, zero solutions here. Pollen goes on and on about "the French" and how families used to eat dinner together. The French, and the rest of the world, are moving as fast as they can to SAD so the whole "French" thing is outdated nonsense. "Dinner together as a family" is also nonsense. It hasn't happened since June Cleaver in "Leave it to Beaver" and never will again. If Mr. Pollen is such a "journalist" as he claims he might visit Walmart and Costco and asses the ACP (average customer physique) and then go to Sprouts or Whole foods and check out the ACP. Many of us are doing poorly and some of us are doing very well. Those doing poorly are not "lazy, self-indulgent, gluttons", they are victims of the folks in Mr. Pollen's book. A "real journalist" in the field would figure out who is doing well and how they are doing it.

Karen is up for the sole open tenure spot in her department at Massachusetts's Enfield College, but the department chairman is championing her underqualified Native American colleague, Joe Lone Wolf, which sends Karen into a dither. She also worries about her boyfriend's deployment to Iraq and her daughter's jaunt to Nepal. After someone slips Joe a fatal overdose of what may be peyote, she becomes the prime murder suspect. Plenty of other suspects emerge from the stereotypical cast of faculty and students, as Dobson trots out a plague of academic bugaboos, including drugs, false credentials, plagiarism, faculty in-fighting and hate crimes.
