Basic overview material

This is a pretty good introduction for people new to the subject because it is easy to follow with lots of examples. If you have read other pretty good books though, this won't add much. The artwork does complement the mood.

I am interested in the subject of dreams and this book makes it an easy read. Especially with the illustrations. Along with my other dream books I keep it handy when I have a question.

Dry but good at 3.5 stars

Megan's review is partially right. Fontana tells you how to interpret your dreams in a series of 25 exercises each one prefaced by a mini discussion of what that theme/archetype means. An example is the theme of Buildings which is then followed by a dream about being in a building and how to interpret this, --BUT-- it is also a dream dictionary if you use the index in the back. The book also discusses out of body experiences and altered states and has a good Jungian bibliography which I appreciated.

The real problem is that Fontana is not a great writer and so the reading is rather slow and ponderous but thankfully valuable. The artwork is throughout the book which can be distracting at times, bright hues to match the theme but OTOH enjoyable in its own right.

All that said there are several minuses to Fontana's approach. One it is biased towards non Christian faiths, two I did not always agree with his interpretation, which may be good in itself as that I understood how to analyze a dream but just didn't see that his view, and finally three and to me the largest problem, there is literally no discussion of nightmares, the topic is totally ignored. Hence I would in reality give it 3.5 stars but for the reviews sake I of course rounded up. So in summary, would I recommend it? Yes particularly at some of the marketplace prices offered here -- it's definitely worth a read to start your dream analysis studies though it does tend to be pedantic.

About the Author
Michael Griesbach is a longtime Wisconsin prosecutor and a member of the board of advisers at the Wisconsin Innocence Project. He is a frequent presenter and panelist on the topic of wrongful convictions and their causes. He has also presented on other topics concerning the criminal justice system and its need for reform. Mr. Griesbach is the author of the widely acclaimed, The Innocent Killer: A True Story of a Wrongful Conviction and Its Astonishing Aftermath, published by the American Bar Association in 2014. He hopes to leave his readers better informed about the criminal justice system and more concerned about those whose lives it deeply affects. He lives in northeastern Wisconsin with his wife Jody and their four children.

The trouble began almost immediately after the documentary aired. It started with social media; the bomb threats came later. “You’re an utter fool,” pronounced the first message on my book’s Facebook page, “either that or you’re in on it too.”

“Utter fool,” I could live with. Everyone’s an utter fool at some point in their life, some of us more often than others. But “in on it too”?

The documentary that had so upset my former Facebook friend had just been released on Netflix, but was soon to be an international smash hit—Making a Murderer, about the Steven Avery case.

Mr. Avery, of course, is the wrongly convicted Wisconsin man who, two years after his release from prison for a crime he did not commit, perpetrated one of the most horrific murders in the history of Wisconsin, a state with a long and ignominious past of horrific murders.

At least that’s what the majority of Wisconsinites and the few who paid attention to the story outside our borders thought before Making a Murderer turned the case upside down.
What was it about Making a Murderer that so firmly convinced people that lightning had struck twice, that Steven Avery had been wrongly convicted a second time? And why were they so mad?

The Truth About Steven Avery and "Making a Murderer"

If all you know about Steven Avery's murder trial is from "Making a Murderer" you need to read this book. This interesting read delves deep into Avery's history, his wrongful 1985 conviction and into the truth about what really happened the day Theresa Halbach was killed. It's a fairly quick read and well worth the time to read.

Convincing and compelling

In watching the documentary Making a Murderer, I was struck by how slanted it was toward the defense. It was obvious that the documentarians were not giving the whole story but rather were focusing on the argument that Steven Avery had been framed. In searching for more information, I came across Griesbach's book and chose to read it because, while Griesbach is a prosecuting attorney, he is also active in the Wisconsin Innocence Project and is knowledgeable and concerned about miscarriages of justice. It seemed likely, therefore, that of all the accounts of the crime and trial, his would be the most objective. He provides a thorough critique of the documentary and the defense strategy and a thorough review of evidence, including much that was not revealed in the documentary. It found it a very convincing and compelling read.

MOST "WINNERS" ARE VERY GOOD--BUT NOT ALL

This anthology contains two dozen short stories by writers who were awarded an "Edgar" for excellence by the Mystery Writers of America between 1948 and 1978--in most cases (a) for their individual stories, but in a few instances either (b) for a book of short stories or (c) for their total body of work up to that time. In the cases where (b) and (c) pertain, Bill Pronzini, the editor, selected one of their stories to include.

In order, the 24 stories are (1) "The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party" by Ellery Queen; (2) "After-Dinner Story" by William Irish (pen name of Cornell Woolrich); (3) "Catfish Story" by Lawrence G. Blochman; (4) "Love Lies Bleeding" by Philip MacDonald; (5) "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl; (6) "The House Party" by Stanley Ellin; (7) "The Blessington Method" by Stanley Ellin; (8) "Over There--Darkness" by William O'Farrell; (9) "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl; (10) "The Sailing Club" by David Ely; (11) "This Will Kill You" by Patrick Quentin (pen name of Richard Wilson Webb and Hugh Callaghan Wheeler); (12) "H as in Homicide" by Lawrence Treat; (13) "The Chosen One" by Rhys Davies; (14) "The Oblong Room" by Edward D. Hoch; (15) "The Man Who Fooled the World" by Warner Law; (16) "Goodbye, Pops" by Joe Gores; (17) "In the Forests of Riga the Beasts Are Very Wild Indeed" by Margery Finn Brown; (18) "Moonlight Gardener" by Robert L. Fish; (19) "The Purple Shroud" by Joyce Harrington; (20) "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" by Harlan Ellison; (21) "The Jail" by Jesse Hill Ford; (22) "Like a Terrible Scream" by Etta Revesz; (23) "Chance After Chance" by Thomas Walsh; and (24) "The Cloud Benath the Eaves" by Barbara Owens.

There are, I believe, eight different kinds of stories here. The most numerous (12) are "Premise Stories" that are a bit like the game of "Guess what I'm holding in my closed hand"--their premises are usually something unusual if not impossible (for instance, WHAT IF--a killer can get police to destroy the murder weapon? or WHAT IF--a man doesn't know he is dead?), and their "secret" is disclosed at the end. Related to these are Premise Stories that end (a) with the punishment of a character or (b) with a character's pitiful misfortune (one of each). Four more stories are basically Fair Play Puzzle Stories, where readers get to match wits with the detectives and authors; three stories are "Realistic" Stories that present characters' pitiful misfortunes; two are "Realistic" Stories that (a) show a character undergoing a change in personality for the better or (b) reveal WHAT a character's true personality is (one of each); and one story appears to be a "Tour de force" that showcases the awesome writing abilities of the author at the expense of the story itself.

In my judgment, the six best stories are by Margery Finn Brown (whose story contains no crime or detection), Thomas Walsh (who wrote about a alcoholic ex-priest), Warner Law (who whimsically included himself and his family within the story), Robert Fish (who gives readers a chance to solve a mystery that stumps the police), Rhys Davies (whose story presents a Welsh factory worker with a housing problem), and Joyce Harrington (whose story goes a step farther than most readers could guess). The three weakest stories are by Barbara Owens and Roald Dahl (whose endings to "The Cloud Beneath the Eaves" and "The Landlady" are far too easy to guess) and David Ely (whose ending to "The Sailing Club" comes as a fizzling letdown).

Overall, I would give THE EDGAR WINNERS (1980) a solid "B+" grade.

I read it when I was young and needed to reread
it now as an adult. Glad this title made it available

Why Great Teachers Quit

Farber does an excellent job of describing why the professional mortality rate in public school teaching is so high, and why many of the casualties are just those teachers whom we can least afford to lose. The list of reasons is formidable: abuse of standardized testing; teachers powerless to control violence and chaos in the classroom; dilapidated, miserably maintained schools; ever-increasing expectations that must be met with ever-decreasing resources; an inept bureaucracy that is more interested in shifting blame and finding scapegoats than in addressing the problems; compensation that is far less than that available in fields making similar demands for intelligence, training, and skill; parents who micromanage their child's education; parent who don't give two hoots about their child's education; schools and teachers blamed for a host of socioeconomic ills (poverty, family breakdown, etc.) over which they have no control whatsoever. As one who has mentored school science and math projects for years and done a lot of volunteering in the schools, I was not surprised by Farber's extensive and accurate indictments. One of the results I've seen as a university prof has been the tendency of the brighter students to avoid careers in education as if they were the plague. Who wants a job (no longer a profession!) that is viewed with such contempt by our society?

I am less happy with Farber's proposed solutions to these problems. While her solutions are very reasonable, by and large, I fear the chances of their being implemented in America as it exists today are absolutely zero. In the long haul, this breakdown of our educational system will turn the U.S. into a second-rate or third-rate country. American politicians and the American people seem to be very much more interested in finding scapegoats and remaining in denial than in dealing with our badly broken public school system.

By compiling stories from teachers across the nation, Katy Farber identifies the consistent problems which follow the profession. While the stories may scare some from becoming a teacher, they provide solace to those who have remained in education and provide a base of mutual understanding among teachers, administrators and board members. Why Great Teachers Quit should be read by all groups and used as a workbook to bridge the frustrations and help fix the situations that often send the best into other occupations.

A FASCINATING, BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Bernd Brunner is "a freelance writer who often explores the intersection of cultural history and and history of science in his writings," such as Moon: A Brief History, Bears: A Brief History, The Ocean at Home: An Illustrated History of the Aquarium, etc.

He wrote in the first chapter of this 2012 book, "Of course, trees are not normally found in houses, nor are they decorated... But the tree in this book usually has only its crown and trunk---and its place is in the home. A wholly remarkable tree, and one in need of an explanation. Although now inseparable from Christmas for us, the tree isn't found in this form in early Christianity at all. It is missing even from church songs and prayers. Something mysterious surrounds this tree that first appeared in the German cultural context, before it literally branched out... capturing the imagination of many people. This book also tells a small global story. What drove people to go off into the forest, chop down a tree, put it in their house, and decorate it in the first place? Is it really just a pagan remnant---as conventional wisdom has it---or is the history behind it more complex?" (Pg. 1-3)

He explains, "The wood wrought from trees is also found in the rituals of many cultures. It has been used for thousands of years in celebrations of the winter solstice---the so-called Yuletide---in northern Europe... it was the symbolical equivalent of the living tree. These rituals probably began as elements of a fertility myth... In time, these pre-Christian rituals came to be associated with the Christmas season, in particular the revels of Twelfth Night, on January 5, the eve of Epiphany." (Pg. 11)

He suggests, "A link can be made between the ritual of our Christmas tree and the paradise play, which had existed since the Middle Ages, even before the nativity play... Creation plays presented Adam and Eve... Also onstage, of course, was a green tree of paradise, decorated with apples and communion hosts. The paradise play, performed on Christmas Eve... begins to transcend the religious context of the play and move toward a role in the Christmas celebrations of the guilds." (Pg. 15-16)

He observes, "For a long time the Christmas tree in Germany was considered Protestant---a ... Luther tree---and the aversion of many Catholics went so far that at the end of the nineteenth century many simply called Protestantism the 'Tannenbaum religion.' ... [But] In the middle of the nineteenth century Christmas trees were already found in churches---decorated with angels, crosses, wafers, and straw stars. These last were meant to represent the Star of Bethlehem while also reminding the viewers of the straw in the manger." (Pg. 31)

He notes, "The American way of celebrating Christmas is relatively recent, evolving in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In the United States the roots of the Christmas tree reach back to the early 1800s---perhaps not as far as we might guess, given the ubiquity of German immigrants in early America. Few seem to have brought the custom along... In any case, such an icon surely would have been reviled by the Puritans, who associated evergreens with heathen superstition. In fact, even Christmas was denounced as an artificial invention without any biblical warrant." (Pg. 52) Later, he adds, "some American Christians believe to this day that the Christmas tree is a pagan and sinful custom... Some base their stance on the Book of Jeremiah, chapter 10... Defenders of the Christmas tree would argue, though, that the tree Jeremiah refers to is an idol, and the decorated Christmas tree is not. If it were, would its worshippers simply thrown it away at the end of the Christmas season? Most Christians enjoy the tree with a clear conscience." (Pg. 60-61)

He says, "some yuletide celebrants are careful to refer to the 'holiday tree' rather than the 'Christmas tree,' precisely to guard against giving offense to those who don't celebrate the Christian feast. But whatever the tree is called, the effects it unleashes...remain somewhat unpredictable... As a Christian symbol the tree inspires a quietude, reflectiveness, and joy in places where the story of Christmas is known and prized. In contrast, where the story is not part of the culture, the tree may elicit resistance, or may simply take on layers of meaning unrelated to those that Christians attribute to it." (Pg. 78-80)

He concludes, "Was the Christmas tree something consciously and deliberately 'invented'? Was someone searching for it? Probably not, but it was found nonetheless... Let us assume that the nameless inventor of the Christmas tree knew about the mythical trees of the past and the old heathen customs... the Christian paradise play... played a decisive role in the emergence of the Christmas tree... In a certain sense the evolution of the tree is but a repetition of the development of Christmas itself---a celebration that also came into the world incomplete, with roots deep in the mythologies of various Eurasian peoples, and only slowly came into its own." (Pg. 90-91)
