From the book's Preface:
It is not claimed that the following pages contain any new ideas. They were inspired by the writings of Tolstoy, who was the first, and in fact the only, author of my acquaintance who ever seemed to me to place the doctrine of non-resistance upon a substantial basis. After reading
Tolstoy I determined to make a careful study of the subject, but on a thorough search of book stores and libraries could find next to nothing dealing with the question, while the shelves were crowded with literature extolling the glories of war and the beneficence of patriotism.

The first part of this volume which deals with the state is very fragmentary, and in no wise so complete as can be found in many other volumes, but in the portion which deals with crime and punishment, I have found a much newer field, and one which has generally been dis-
cussed by those who have little practical knowledge of the machinery of courts of justice.

It has been my purpose to state the reasons which appeal to me in support of the doctrine of non-resistance, rather than to give authorities to sustain the theories advanced. Still, I believe that the student who is interested in the subject of criminology, and wishes to carefully investigate crime and punishment, will find that most of the great historians, philosophers, and thinkers will amply corroborate the views herein set forth, as to the cause of crime, and the evil and unsatisfactory results of punishment.

Clarence Seward Darrow (April 18, 1857 – March 13, 1938) was an American lawyer and leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union, best known for defending teenage thrill killers Leopold and Loeb in their trial for murdering 14-year-old Robert "Bobby" Franks (1924) and defending John T. Scopes in the Scopes Trial (1925), in which he opposed William Jennings Bryan (statesman, noted orator, and 3-time presidential candidate). Called a "sophisticated country lawyer", he remains notable for his wit and agnosticism, which marked him as one of the most famous American lawyers and civil libertarians.

Well-considered criticism of "criminal justice"

Now best known for his defense of a teacher's right to teach evolution in the "Scopes Monkey Trial," Clarence Darrow devoted much of his life in the courtroom to an expert public criticism of the notion of "criminal justice" and of the penal system in the U.S. Rather than focus his energy on "winning" the cases of his clients, he deconstructed conventional conceptions of "blame," "guilt," et al., arguing that punishment itself contributes to the oppressive conditions that produce "crime." Interestingly, he often "won" these cases on the merit of his theory, in spite of giving scant attention to the particulars of the individual cases.
This compendium of Darrow's work is an excellent (and extremely well-written) cross-section of his ideas -- a must-read for anyone interested in law, juridical theory, anarchism, etc.

Excellent Well-Written Book That Is As Relevant In The Present As In The Past.

This is an excellent well-written book that is as relevant today as it was when Clarence Darrow originally wrote it over 100 years ago. Carol Moore wrote an excellent Introduction to the book in the Loompanics print version of this book. Clarence Darrow was one of the most successful defenders of liberty and justice. He was a compassionate man who had deep and genuine sympathy for the ignorant, poor, and oppressed people. He claimed that all states, even democracies, wield their power to benefit the rich and powerful and to keep the poor and oppressed powerless. He opposed the death penalty claiming that he felt it was nothing but legalized murder. Clarence Darrow said it is a strange code of negative ethics that says a man should be punished for an evil act and not be be rewarded for a virtuous one. Men's lives are a strange mixture of good and evil. No life is wholly good, and no life is wholly bad. A life of great virtues may here and there be interspersed with an evil act. The law picks out the evil and ignores the good.

Another good historical look

I've read other books by this author and as usual his research is there to see. The fact that it's not just a standard "ninja" book that shows you the weapons and such is refreshing, reading about the tools and weapons is great but reading about the history behind these things and the ninja themselves is a real treat.

Honestly Researched.

The book reads like a thesis paper. The language is dry but not particularly difficult. However, the information is exciting! The book is also very honest about which information is reliable and tries to dry it's conclusions from multiple sources. Hence four stars...maybe five if you want something factual and don't mind dry.

Informative, straightforward, and in-depth.

"In Search Of The Ninja" by Antony Cummins is an organized work. This book has many layers and subsections which compliment one another quite well. I personally own every Shinobi related book Antony has released. Whether you have some previous understanding or even misunderstanding of what Shinobi are you will be satisfied with this book. After each of Antony's previous books such as: Shinobi Soldiers I & II, I felt more and more knowledgeable, yet never truly satisfied with the way the information was being presented. It seemed like there was a back and forth explanation which seized to clarify or dispels myths, making it seem as if you are reading a book dedicated to speculation. After "True Path" was released,I felt a little more accepting with the scattered bits of information. In this particular book there is no more confusion, it is all here! Finally Anthony has broke that boundary between inane and wearisome. The pages are organized with data and pictures accordingly. There are times when the book seems to veer of course, but nonetheless regains its primary focus. If you want to learn about the beliefs, missions, and history of "Ninja", then I would recommend this book. The hardcover and fitting design, along with the sourced information adds a higher sense of quality compares to previous books. I still think it would be nice for a textbook containing EVERYTHING.

Great reference

This text is a great tool for anyone in cardiology or wishing to expand cardiology knowledge base. It is advanced, so a good baseline understanding of cardiology is necessary in order to understand the reading. I purchased this test to help build up my cardiology skills as I begin a new career in cardiology as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Makes you wonder if a cardiology book can be perfect anymore

Obviously this is the standard book, but it is not prefect. As the subject of cardiovascular disease is exploding, it has become more and more challenging to cover it all in a textbook (hence the online only content I guess!). Two chapters that I have read so far left me with a lot more to desire (cardio-oncology and cardiac disease in the athlete) but on the other hand the chapter on exercise testing is phenomenal.
I will probably update more as I continue to read but so far I have had mixed feelings about it unlike the prior two editions.

What a wonderful read!

The title is a bit misleading. It isn't just about organizing tomorrow, but how to revolutionize your life!

I am already benefitting from the strategies that have been suggested. One thing I like is that most of them require a matter of mere MINUTES each day to implement.

The strategies provoke very high leverage changes that will alter the results you get...BUT, strangely enough, without focusing on results per se, or in the problems you're trying to solve.

I read this book twice and now, these changes are really making a difference in all aspects of my life.

Do yourself the greatest of favors and read...AND IMPLEMENT what appears in this book.

Thoughts won’t change anything but acting on them will. This book maps out the program for you.

Have you ever taken a class or even garnered best practices for productivity from articles and books, but they didn’t seem to help? The authors of this book tackle productivity issues in a much more logical way. Skill mastery is achieved through repetitions, one step at a time. That might not be new, but how we get to mastery level could be. We learn that lining up a set of skills we want to improve and bombarding ourselves with compulsions to master all of them, is a recipe for failure. This program works on the premise of choosing one thing at a time and being accountable for that one thing until conquered. The authors explain the concept of channel capacity and how so many professionals try to change too many things too quickly. They over-stuff their channel capacity.

This book discusses eight simple, concrete concepts:
• Organize Tomorrow Today
• Choose Wisely
• Maximize your Time endorsed
• Build and Break Your Habits
• Evaluate Correctly
• Learn How to Talk to Yourself
• Learn How to Talk With Others
• Become Abnormal

But of those eight, “The ‘law’ of human channel capacity pretty much dictates that three of these ideas will successfully be incorporated into [your] improvement strategy.”

Easy to read and straight forward. I am implementing one of the techniques and am amazed at how using it is changing my thought process. I'm already an organized, focused person, but this book has taken my thinking to a new level. Well worth the read, and the implementation!

Manuel Velasquez is the former Director of Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. He is now chair of the Department of Management at the Leavey School of Business at SCU. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles on Business Ethics.

Useful for those unfamiliar with philosophy or ethics

Business Ethics: Concepts and Cases is widely used as an introduction to the study of business ethics. I have seen it used in first and second year philosophy courses; it is also used at the graduate level in business schools. The author, Manuel Velasquez, was trained as a philosopher but has worked in business programs for a good deal of his career. Not surprisingly then the text tends to reflect the preoccupations of business faculties more than those of philosophy departments.

In several key respects the text is philosophically unsophisticated, especially in chapter two, the lengthy chapter devoted to normative ethical theory. Many philosophers would reject Velasquez' characterization of Kantian ethics, especially his explanation of the first formulation. His treatment of the ethic of caring in chapter two is adequate, but in later chapters the core elements of the caring perspective are lost, to be replaced by a generalized concern for the welfare of everyone, even that of total strangers and distant ecosystems.

One of the chief strengths of the text lies in the high quality of the case studies. These have been carefully crafted to bring out the complexity and uncertainties of everyday moral deliberation.

This the sixth edition of the text reflects the general trend in collegiate publishing to appeal to weaker students who find reading a chore and resent being confronted with their own limitations. It is ironic then that one reviewer has complained that the language employed in the text is unduly sophisticated. This is one of the simpler texts in business ethics. Unlike other texts in the Prentice Hall catalog it doesn't expect students to read scholarly work in its original form, but instead offers predigested summaries of important theories and principles found in ethics.

The fifth edition is more detailed than the sixth edition and doesn't see the need for photographs, sidebar summaries, bulleted lists, video CDs of the nightly news and other props which add to the price of an already overpriced textbook.

The best out there

I have taught business ethics for over ten years. This is the book I use. It is the best introductory business ethics text I know of. I tried Trevino & Nelson's text last year, but found that it didn't present enough in the way of theory to help students actually make ethical decisions. I've come back to using Velasquez's book. I agree with the reviewer that complained about Velasquez's writing style. I wish Velasquez had read The Elements of Style and taken it to heart. But this is a minor quibble, given the superior quality of the content.

Interesting, but indirect and prolix.

The cases are very interesting and informative. The wording and writing style can be very confusing, although Velasquez does provide examples that provide more clarity. The questions for both the chapter review and case studies require critical thinking, but are too elaborate, and most aren't thought-provoking or serve any particular purpose.
