THE REBEL AND THE ALPHA !!!

Touch of the Alpha by K Matthew is absolutely delightful! This is the third installment of this amazing serial. The story is exciting, smart, well written, original, imaginative, fast paced, thrilling, captivating, romantic, heartwarming, arousing, sensual and steamy. Karen is fed up with her life and her pack. She breaks every rule she can and is a disgrace to her pack. Her wolf is so weak she can barely manage a full moon shift - sometimes. Her pack alpha which just happens to also be her brother is at his wit's end and as a last resort, decides to send her to their regional alpha at Sky High Ranch for help and an attitude adjustment. Carter is a pureblood and the regional alpha. His job is to help struggling and wayward wolves. Carter never breaks the rules and certainly never rocks the boat! But he wants to do just a little more than help the beautiful rebellious Karen. He wants her in his bed and his life-permanently! But it is strictly forbidden. A regional alpha can only mate a lifeblood and choosing Karen could cost them both their lives. But as in life, best laid plans seem to always go awry! He could never - could he? Handsome sexy pureblood alpha wolf-check! Beautiful she-wolf with luscious curves and a sassy rebellious attitude who can barely manage a full moon shift-check! Danger, conflict and enemies with malicious intent-check! Romance, love, angst and steamy sex-check! I loved it! Wonderful entertainment and a great read!

I loved this book. Karen & Carter become closer & there are rumors flying which someone has made the council which is made up of the other regional Alphas. They want Carter to marry Ashley Benson but he does not want to marry her. He is supposed to sleep with members of his pack to try to get them with a pup. He does not want anyone but Karen though. If the council could prove that Karen & Carter are seeing each other it could mean Carter & possibly Karen's death. At the end of this book Carter will have to make a decision on what he is going to do about the situation he finds himself in. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next. Just as an Excellent book as the others in this series. K. Matthew creates a world that you can see yourself inhabiting. The characters in the books are wonderfully created to feel like they are a real person & not a character in a book. You feel like you know them & if not careful will start to think they are a real person not a characters in a book. I got lost in this book like I did the other books in this series. I would recommend this series as an excellent read.

OMG! What are you doing to us K. Matthew??? This story just gets hotter and more suspenseful. Definitely worth reading!

Carter is under suspicion by his pack and the council descends on Sky High Ranch to catch Carter in the act of mating with the non-purebred, Karen. Fortunately, Carter's beta, Kenny, finds out just in time to intercept Carter thus saving his life. The Council gives Carter an ultimatum send Karen away or keep her but marry a rival regional alpha's pure blood sister. What will Carter do? Karen can feel the tension at the ranch and she suspects that she's the cause. She returns to her room after a bonfire to find Carter in her room. Carter can't get enough of Karen. Karen knows this is the last time she'll be with Carter and hopes that she'll be leaving with his pup. She's hopelessly in love with Carter. What will Carter do? Send her away to save his life or keep her because he knows that she's his life mate?

I love this new series by K. Matthew and can't wait for part four!

Wonderful Program Outlined Step-by-Step

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Obesity is so informative that I read it cover to cover within a couple of days before actually going back and studying the material. I am a Counselor aspiring to specialize in weight management and eating disorders. This is the best reference guide I've found related to obesity management. The authors not only guide the counselor through step-by-step modules but also includes dialogue examples with clients as well as educational client hand-outs to help foster a successful weight loss program. Of equal value and importance, clients are taught lifestyle changes to ensure long-term maintenance of a healthy weight. I recommend this book to any counselor with an interest in addressing the issue of obesity in his or her practice. Very easy read, great tips, very helpful. I'm only through the first few sessions with my patient but seems to be going well. It's a very long treatment program, so at my setting I've had to edit it and just take tips. But I like it.

About the Author
Paul F. Aubin is the author of many CAD and BIM titles including the widely acclaimed: AUBIN ACADEMY MASTER SERIES: REVIT ARCHITECTURE, MEP, AUTOCAD MEP and AUTOCAD ARCHITECTURE, Paul Aubin is an independent architectural consultant who travels the country and abroad lecturing and providing Revit Architecture and AutoCAD Architecture implementation, training, and support services. His involvement in the architectural profession spans twenty years, with experience that includes design, production, CAD management, mentoring, coaching, and training. He regularly teaches professionals in seminars and in their offices and has been an adjunct faculty member for both the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago and Moraine Valley Community College. Mr. Aubin currently serves as Moderator for Cadalyst magazine's online CAD Questions forum, is an active member of the Autodesk user community, and has been a top-rated speaker at Autodesk University (Autodesk's annual user convention) for many years. His diverse experience in architectural firms, as a CAD manager, and as an educator gives his writing and his classroom instruction a fresh and credible focus. eHe is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. Paul Aubin has a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture.

I got this book as a reference for my job. I bought it used so it didn't come with the cd. I actually don't even use the same version of the program but I still find this book incredibly useful. I'm glad this was the first book I bought. It has over 900 pages of direct and simple instructions for navigating autocad architecture. This book is ideal for people who already use autocad and are trying to learn the autocad architecture software. The book assumes the reader has fair amount of experience with computer drafting, and it's not really suited to beginners. But it's ideal for someone trying to really master the autocad architecture software. It's helping me a lot. It will be a long time before I can absorb all the information in this book. Note; this book is for autocad architecture, not revit.

This textbook stands in a category of its own when it comes to the wealth and depth of information presented about the subject, and most striking is the effort that was spent putting it together, a model for others to emulate, an example when comes to the level of sincerity and integrity that should be undertaken when writing a textbook that is meant to be used for learning and also as a reference, the presentation and the level of expertise of the author are really remarkable, I am sailing through it, a real joy not to feel the frustration that is normally associated with handling an elaborate and convoluted software such as the AutoCAD architecture, highly recommended for serious learners.

When originally published in German in 1924, this volume was hailed as the first modern, comprehensive archaeological overview of an emerging area of the world. Yes, the Caribbean islands had long been known and owned, occupied, or traded among by the economically advanced nations of the world. However, the original inhabitants--as well as their artifacts, languages, and culture--had been treated by explorers and entrepreneurs alike as either slaves or hindrances to progress, and were used or eliminated. There was no publication that treated seriously the region and the peoples until this work. In the following ten years, additional pertinent publications emerged, along with a request to translate the original into Spanish. Based on those recent publications, Loven decided to update and reissue the work in English, which he thought to be the future international language of scholarship. This work is a classic, with enduring interpretations, broad geographic range, and an eager audience.

Great back-in-print

This book has been our of print forever! It is an amazing work. While not original archaeological evidence, Loven did a remarkable job of compiling all known information about Taino culture up to that time. It has been the basis for most pre-Columbian anthropological insights - though few scholars have given him credit. I am grateful to the University Alabama Press for republishing this seminal work.

This book explains why risk management and internal controls in ANY organization are so important. Twothumbsup!

I liked this book very much. It was of interest to me because it explains why risk management and internal controls in ANY organization are so important. As a SCORE volunteer business coach I have to explain what is covered in this book from time to time. It's good for entrepreneurs to think in terms of internal accounting controls.

This book is not written for entrepreneurs, though. It is written for board members of for-profits and nonprofits alike - seasoned and newly assigned. It is also written for executives of these companies and organizations. Among other things this book covers the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Director's "audit committee." It provides a fairly comprehensive overview of what this special group of detached, independent, board members must do in order to protect the company from its executives, its Board, and look out for the shareholders. Without a properly functioning audit committee the executives of a company or nonprofit are free to use the company as their own personal piggy bank. They are free to manipulate the value of the stock through fraud and take part in insider trading schemes.

I loved the Preface to the book. It does a wonderful job of summarizing the book chapter by chapter. Thus, the actual reading of the book was pretty easy. However, I think the book could have been streamlined a little better. I would have reduced the chapters from 15 to 9 as follows:

1. Evolution of Audit Committees
2. It's All about Risk Management
3. Typical Audit Committee Charters
4. Duties of Audit Committees at For-Profits
5. Duties of Audit Committees at Nonprofits
6. Qualifications and Characteristics of Ideal Audit Committee Members
7. Ethics-Related Initiatives
8. The Importance of Internal Controls, including Internal Auditing
9. Information Technology

The author is certainly qualified to write this book. At one time he was Director of Education for Touche Ross, one of the fomer Big 8 public accounting firms. I used to work for one of the other 8. And he has been a controller, CFO, and college professor. Besides the CPA designation, he holds the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and CMA (Certified Management Accountant, and the CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner). 5 stars!

About the Author
George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence award by the American Sociological Association, and in 2004, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by LaTrobe University, Melborune, Australia. He has served as Chair of the American Sociological Association's Sections on Theoretical Sociology and organizations and Occupations. He held the UNESCO Chair in Social Theory at the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Fulbright-Hay Chair at York University in Canada, and a Fulbright-Hays award to the Netherlands. He has been Scholar-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. Dr. Ritzer's main theoretical interests lie in metatheory as well as applied social theory. In metatheory, his contributions include Metatheorizing in Sociology(Lexington Books, 1991), Sociology: A Multiple Paradigm Science (Allyn and Bacon, 1975, 1980), and Toward an Integrated Sociological Paradigm (Allyn and Bacon). Professor Ritzer is perhaps best known for the McDonaldization of Society (4/e, 2004); translated into more than a dozen languages) and several related books (also with a number of translations, including Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society (1995), Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Revolutionizing the Means of Consumption (2/e, 2005),The Globalization of Nothing (2/e, 2007), and (with Craig Lair) Outsourcing: Globalization and Beyond. He edited the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2005), and is the founding editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. He just completed editing the eleven-volume Encyclopedia of Sociology (2007) and The Blackwell Companion to Globalization (2007). In 2006, McGraw-Hill published the second edition of Professor Ritzer's Contemporary Sociological Theory and Its Classic Roots: The Basics. In 2007, McGraw-Hill will publish the seventh edition of Modern Sociological Theory, and the fifth edition of Classical Sociological Theory. The latter texts, as well as this one, have been translated into a number of languages.

An authentic, albeit short, review

I'm currently a senior majoring in Criminal Justice. Most of a CJ major is actually Sociology classes. As such, I've encountered both classic and contemporary sociological theories in most of my classes. The first thing I noticed about this book is that it's short. Less than 300 pages and smaller than most textbooks, Ritzer keeps things clear and concise. Really, what more do you want in a text? The book covers classical theories in brief, contemporary theories of everyday life and grand theories, integrative theories, feminist theories, globalization theory, and explores the newest developments in postmodern theories. Ritzer's own work on McDonaldization and consumption theory are covered as well.

Bottom line: This is a well-written, clearly communicated book covering contemporary sociological theory.

I bought this textbook for a college class and it came exactly as described. Giving a review of a textbook is difficult because no matter what the subject, sometimes the material can be dry. However, I did pass the class, so that's another point towards this textbook!

About the Author
Shusaku Endo was born in Tokyo in 1923 and died in 1996. After his parents divorced, he and his mother converted to Catholicism a faith which is central to many of his tales. He is widely regarded as Japan's leading writer and has won all his country's major literary prizes, including the Akutagawa, the Noma, the Shincho, and the Tanizaki.

Speculative (non)fiction or heartfelt plea?

Apparently Shusaku Endo wrote "A Life of Jesus" in an attempt to better communicate the Christian faith to his countrymen. In his view the Japanese have not embraced Christianity because of the highly judgmental "paternal" aspects found in the Bible. As a remedy to that he tries to paint a picture of Jesus Christ the man, a simple character that unconditionally loved all whom he encountered. For the most part he succeeds and presents a comprehensive narrative that vividly describes the world Jesus lived in.

It's unforunate then that he should spend so much time trying to downplay the supernatural aspects of Jesus' life and Christianity in general. In conclusion he states that "the human condition is not to be curcumscribed by tangible facts" - yet for much of the book he tries on a number of admitedly speculative theories in an effort to rationalize events recounted in the synoptic texts. Considering that many Japanese people are comfortable with Buddhist concepts such as transmigration or Shinto ideas concerning ancestors and spirit worship it's hard to imagine that they would need pages and pages of exposition to arrive at the simple message "love your neighbour as you love yourself". Western critics are quick to point out that the Japanese are not religious simply because they don't practice in a fashion comparable to those in the West. While this may be true their acceptance of a supernatural realm cannot be argued. Why then does Endo spend so much time on this issue?

It almost seems as if he's trying to rationalize his own faith and gets sidetracked with his intended goal. Issues like the virgin birth, stating that Jesus was John the Baptist's "disciple", the feeding of 5000, the account of Lazarus and countless other literal interpretations do little to serve his ultimate goal. The most baffling apology of all is Endo's account of the resurrection which states that the disciples merely concocted this story out of guilt for selling out Jesus to the Sandhedrin. Again he further dilutes his message to embolden his narrative.

Harsh criticism aside, this book is very well written and paints a unique picture of the man Jesus Christ. If nothing else it's thought provoking and well paced. Considering the miniscule impact it seems to have had on Japanese society, Endo would probably consider this work a failure. On the whole though it's another voice and another opinion. If Japan is to ever embrace Christianity they'll likely need more Endos delivering impassioned pleas such as that found in "A Life of Jesus".

Mallowcups for Shusaku

Shusaku Endo, in his own words a "solitary novelist in the Orient", has given us a singular gift in "A Life of Jesus." This novelist employed his talent to put a soundtrack and lighting to the gospels, complete with the dimensions of smell, taste, and touch. While I feel he used the word 'emaciated' one too many times in reference to Jesus, the point he makes is clear; Jesus was not what anyone expected a Messiah to be.
Endo takes a good portion of the book to explore the POV's of the disciples. His is the first account I have seen that presents a compassionate portrait of Judas Iscariot, a man who, in the end, hated himself to death. Toward the end of the book, Endo hammered the perplexing question of what changed the cowardly disciples, who had abandoned Jesus to his fate...the conclusion Endo reached did indeed resonate with this particular reader, though I could not help feel a bit of restless frustration with the end...his conclusions about the 'electrifying change' he saw in the disciples not once suggested the beginning of the book of Acts, where a once denying Peter is now empowered to not only hold forth, but to do so boldly.
The point Endo labors is more about the power of resurrection...he says "Regarding other miracles in the life of Jesus, the Gospel record is soft, compared to the resurrection." Indeed, it was fascinating to get inside the brains of Endo's disciples--the word 'resurrection' has new meaning for me.
I greatly admired this work, am still thinking about it, and had the feeling it ended too soon. In Endo's own words, because I cannot say it better, "Regarding those who deserted him, those who betrayed him, not a word of resentment came to his lips...he prayed for nothing but their salvation. That's the whole life of Jesus. It stands out clean and simple, like a single Chinese ideograph brushed on a blank sheet of paper. It was so clean and simple that no one could make sense of it, and not one could produce its like."

A Compelling Account

I would have never discovered this book had it not been tucked away in a box of books given to us by an elderly friend...Endo wrote this book in the 70s and it deserves to be revived in connection with the recent interest in "the Historical Jesus".
Endo provides a speculative historical account of the life of Jesus based on the New Testament. His attention to Scriptural detail is remarkable and he provides many compelling interpretations of the words of Jesus and the events of the gospels. His goal in writing this account was to explain Christianity to a Japanese culture that views a fathers as stern and judgemental figures. Hence, his challenge is to re-define God the Father as a loving and compassionate figure in contrast to the God often portrayed in the Old Testament. His thesis, in my own words, is that Jesus came not to tell everybody that He is God, but rather to tell us who God is. At a time in history when Jesus' countrymen were looking for a violent revolutionary to lead them from Roman occupation, Jesus was rejected as weak and ineffective. Only in dying with dignity and showing faith and forgiveness in his dying words were his followeres able to understand that his message was indeed revolutionary.
He is careful to distinguish "fact" from truth" and hence "A Life of Jesus" is convincing and historically plausible as well as faith inspiring. He never asks the reader to place blind faith in unprovable accounts of miraculous events. Nonetheless, he ends with his account of the resurrection which argues that the transformation in Jesus disciples after the crucifixion is as miraculous as the corporal resurrection of Jesus from the dead, regardless of whether or not such a resurrection is historically factual.
If this book were more well known, Endo would undoubtedly be attacked by evangelical conservatives for suggesting that acceptance of the factuality of the New Testament is not a prerequisite for faith. In fact, he doesn't even touch on the birth narratives because of the historical speciousness. His account may not convince skeptics to run out and join a church, but they may reconsider their notions of the meaning of Jesus and the nature of the Divine.
