About the Author
Rose Wilder Lane was the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the beloved Little House books. She was born in 1886 on a homestead claim in the Dakota Territory, similar to the one she describes in this novel.

Dan Andreasen has illustrated many well-loved books for children, including River Boy: The Story of Mark Twain and Pioneer Girl: The Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder, both by William Anderson, as well as many titles in the Little House series. He lives with his family in Medina, Ohio.

There is a reason....

There is a reason that Rose Wilder Lane, once a hugely famous journalist and novelist, is now largely remembered as an afterthought when her mother, Laura Ingalls Wilder is mentioned. After reading claims, that Rose took a more than 'editorial' part in her mother's Little House series, and then finding out that this was book was somewhat modeled after her grandparents, Charles and Caroline Ingalls, I had to read it. Luckily, this one is still often reprinted. Here are my thoughts, however educated or not so, they may be: I think this book was tremendously interesting. I startled time and again reading things like "Wild Plum Creek", and about the grasshopper plagues, so familiar from Laura's "On the Banks of Plum Creek". I was suprised (in almost a good way) to read about some of the harsher things that Molly (as she is called in this version) had to do to survive. We definately wouldn't read about some those gory aspects in a Little House book. I actual could have really liked this book if it weren't for the way it was written. Rose's plot line was great (the ending was too abrupt though). But there was absolutely no personalizing her characters here at all. This read like history...this happened and this happened. Oh, and they were madly in love. I never felt like they were madly in love, except for the fact that Rose tells me so in the book once in awhile. In Laura's stories I feel the love between Pa and Ma, in his 'twinkling' eyes as he looks on her..as his first thoughts are usually things to do to make Ma happier wherever they settle. You can feel the love between parents and child(ren) in Laura's books as well. In the soft words, Pa and Ma speak to comfort the children. In the ways Pa and Ma think of their children as they try to soften the blows so frequently felt from the prairie.

There is none of that in Young Pioneers. This story is kind of bland. I think this should be an example pointing to the fact that Rose Wilder Lane perhaps (most certainly in fact) edited her mother's stories, and its never been a secret that she typed up Laura's handwritten manuscripts, but Rose Wilder Lane's writing style would have had to completely changed, to have had a serious authorship of the Little House books.

Could Have Been So Much More

You have to feel sorry for Rose Wilder Lane: at one point, SHE was the famous author in the family. In her lifetime, she wrote over 20 books, and countless magazine and newspaper articles. She wrote biographies of Henry Ford, Herbert Hoover, and Charlie Chaplin. She is considered one of the founders of the Libertarian movement.

Now? She's mainly relegated to being "the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder." She's a footnote in the sad chapter of "The First Four Years."

My daughter and I have been reading a series of books written about Rose, in the style of the Little House books, by her "adopted grandson" and heir, Roger Lea MacBride (although he died after a few books were written, and his own daughter finished them, from what I understand.) And of course, there is "A Wilder Rose", the new novel about the relationship between Laura and Rose. This is the first of her books that I have read.

You'll notice in the Amazon synopsis that the main characters are named Molly and David. I'm not sure when this was changed (probably when the title was - and it suddenly became a children's book, which I find very odd...) but originally the characters were named Charles and Caroline. Sound familiar? Let the Hurricane Roar was originally published as a magazine serial, and then as a novel, and borrowed heavily from the stories that she had grown up hearing from the Ingalls side of her family. There is a grasshopper plague, and blinding blizzards, and cattle frozen to the ground by their own breath. Anyone who has read the Little House books will be very aware of the similarities. It's been said that her mother gave her permission to use the stories, but I'm not certain if that's known for sure; although I suppose at the time she didn't ever expect to continue the Little House books (Little House in the Big Woods was also published in 1932) to the point where the similarities would be noticed.

But taking aside comparisons to her mother's books (in which, it has been alleged, Rose had more than an editorial hand - but don't get me started on that one), the story is interesting, but perhaps because it is such a short book (only around 150 pages in the version that I read) I never felt much of a connection to the characters. When a tragedy struck, as a reader I should have felt for them, or wondered what they would possibly do, but I just never did. I didn't dislike the book at all, but I just never was able to love it, either. I think if it had taken more time for character development it would be more compelling.

Honestly, after reading this, I have a very hard time believing that Rose wrote her mother's books.

I couldn't put it down.

I went into reading this book not sure what to expect. It was reflective of the Little House books, but I was instantly hooked by the suspense of the plot and the events. Although this was meant for children, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a huge fan of all the Little House books, and this one just earned a spot on my bookshelf.

I have "chairs for yoga" and "vol 2" of Eyal Shifroni's "Pros for Yoga". Have to admit this is a number one book for props, clear instructions and extensive alternatives to cater different body situation.

This is not for beginners, one has to have experience at class and want more for home set up / practise.

I have been attending Iyengar yoga class for more than 3.5 years and I benefit a lot from Eyal's book series. Home practises and guidance from the book becomes my daily routine.

Very helpful and very thoughtful, just like the chair yoga book. I particularly like the uttansana in an upside down chair seat and using a strap around the heel and hips for vira bhadrasana III. Keep the books coming!

The Secret To Healing

I have titled my review "The Secret To Healing". Dr. Tien-Sheng Hsu,a family doctor and psychiatrist in Taiwan, writes from a background of dealing with cancer patients, but the material in this book could easily be applied to any healing process - mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual. Based on the Seth material (as channeled through Jane Roberts), the focus is on the human psyche, and how it affects the body. His wisdom, combined with his experience, has resulted in the creation of a unique program for cancer therapy and relapse prevention.

The cases presented in this book are individuals in Taiwan that are facing cancer. Perhaps I should not call them cases - they are more aptly termed the stories of patients that Dr. Tien-Sheng Hsu has worked with. They are not numbers, they are individuals. Part of their treatment is taking them back to life-changing moments, moments where the psychological seed for their current physical distress originated. This material corresponds readily with the same issues faced by patients in the western world.

The material is very well written and easy to follow, and has been translated from the original mandarin in very good form. Through the Seth materials, the position is presented that illness is a reflection of inner problems that reflect in issues with the bodies immune system.

For anyone who is facing a health crisis, or has a family member or friend who is facing a health crisis, this is a must read book. It is a starting point, not an end point. It will make the reader think in fresher, broader terms. Heal your psyche, heal your genes. Take responsibility for your life, and your good health will follow!

I know Dr Hsu for 3 years. Dr Hsu is well known in Taiwan and throughout Asia. He is a leader of New Age movement and specialize in Seth Material.

This is Dr Hsu's first book (he has written more than 10 books), and is currently the only one translated into English.

An Important New View of Cancer

This is a revolutionary book by any measure. Imagine a medical doctor emphatically suggesting that our natural state is a state of health, and that illness is simply a wake-up call to tell us that our spirit is missing something big in life. He suggests that Western medicine ignores a person's psychological state, and despite enormous investments in research we still see the numbers of cases of cancer increasing each year. He believes that the main underlying cause of cancer is blocked creative fire and hopelessness. This might sound a bit simplistic, until you learn that by treating the emotions of his patients, he is getting cures where medicine had given up.

He talks talk about the healing power of loving yourself and how that is very different from being selfish. Based on his deep study of the Seth material channeled by Jane Roberts, Dr. Hsu is a staunch proponent of the role of consciousness in gene mutations and the development of different cancers.

It would be a major step forward in the treatment of this devastating complex of diseases that is cancer if oncologists could be exposed to this type of thinking and look at what is going on in the mind and spirit of their patients, and not just in the biological processes of the physical body. Truly it is time for this kind of paradigm shift.

Robert N. Lussier is a professor of management at Springfield College. He has been teaching management courses for more than 25 years. He has a national and international reputation for his methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used both personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 400 publications to his credit, including Management Fundamentals 6e (Sage), Human Relations 8e (McGraw-Hill), Leadership 6e (South Western/Cengage), and others. He has also published in top tier academic journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Journal of Business Strategy. Good text for Human Relations class.

I purchased this book for a class on Human Relations. I felt it was a very good text. It really covered the subject matter well. I did not feel as if I had to go outside the text much for additional information when preparing a presentation for my class on negotiation. Others in the class felt it supported the topics they had to present on as well such as emotional intelligence and assertiveness.

I would have save time and money if it was stated clearer, in a separate category on what edition the book was instead of in the title. That happens with the majority of the orders and you are not aware of that until you get it. It would be very helpful it this was taken in consideration. I scroll through all of the information as closely as I can view, no less put in the edition type I'm looking for with no help at times. I thought this one was the latest issue because it said it was new and then in condition section, it was very good. Some teachers will let you get a couple of editions dated before but this was a 4th when I needed an 8th. The time received was a plus but it didn't do any good when I have to send it back and try to find if another is still available.

I also searched by ISBN. Eagerly awaiting my textbook, imagine my dismay when , instead of receiving a 10lb enormous hardback book I received a 2 lb paperback spiral bound workbook. Furthermore, I paid $6.99 in s/h and the book came the last day of delivery. Now I must go purchase another , as I head into the 2nd week of class.
That's what I get for not paying attention to previous reviews.

About the Author

Fred Van Dyke is a professor of biology at Wheaton College (Illinois). He has previously served on the faculties of Northwestern College (Iowa) and the Au Sable Institute for Environmental Studies, as a wildlife biologist for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, as a scientific and professional consultant to the U. S. National Park Service, the U. S. Forest Service, the Pew Charitable Trust, and to various private environmental and conservation consultants. He is the author of numerous publications on animal home range and habitat use, management and conservation of animal populations, management of successional processes to conserve habitat, and conservation values and ethics.

It was in good shape but the binding seems to be really weak. I was concerned it was a problem with my book, but then I saw a classmate's binding completely rip, so it must be a problem with the publisher.

TOTAL ENJOYMENT

A few years ago we started reading a play during our Christmas family time. Each family member chooses a character and reads that part. It has been a wonderful experience as most plays take less than two hours, breaks can be taken after each act, and it is great family fun. We prefer humorous plays and it is my responsibility to choose. To make that choice I read numerous plays that are highly recommended through Amazon. Prior outstanding choices have been "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "The Odd Couple". This years choice was easy, "God of Carnage". The play will provide perfect interplay with the characters and my family with their significant others. It is hilarious and even though you can see the change in the characters alliances coming it is so well-written and realistic. The only problem is I do not see any way I can find another play that produces anything close to as much fun and joy for the years to follow. Read it and enjoy.

Brilliant play about the human species sent by an excellent professional book seller

The God of Carnage was recently filmed by Roman Polanswki in a state of the art set outside of Paris with a cast of four oscar winning actors. The film follows Hamptom's script verbatim and Hamptom's translation of Reza's play is as brilliant as the three preceeding it.

What began as a typical, almost natural scrape between two ytoung boys in a pllayground has tuirned into an uncomfortable meeting between two sets of parents, both yuppies, both certain that this is an issue that defines themselves and both unaware that their boys have likely forgotten the issue entirely. This is a play that gives us the oportunity to study culture and the ways in which our culture has changed. The behavior of these four adults is far more disgistiung than the behavior of the boys who brought them together. As the play prgresses- without interval- each character is stripped of his or her armolur, truths come out, allegiences change and even teams change, starting as couple against coupole and then turning to gender against gender.

This is a play that will be seem again and again, in repertoire, on Broadway and the West End in many summer stocks and equity houses and even in many community theatres. It doesn;t belong in the high school or college unless fore the sake of study. This is a script that is easily missed and I wouldn;t be surprised if many read it, watch it or listen to it and gloss over the details, the meaning and the brilliance.

If you enjoy studying drama, this is a script well worth reading.

an evening gone awry

I read this play because my daughter is going to be performing in it in Crested Butte, CO. this week. I also saw the movie made from it called "Carnage". It's a play about polite conversation between adults turned hostile due to agendas and circumstances. It's somewhat humorous, somewhat brutal, and ultimately nothing seems to be solved. It's somewhat entertaining, but not the best play I've ever read.

A wonderful book that looks at kisses in a unique way ...

Valentine’s Day brings kisses to mind. A wonderful book that looks at kisses in a unique way is Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s gem, Plant A Kiss. Illustrated brilliantly by Peter H. Reynolds, the very spare text literally sparkles and matches the mood of the story perfectly. Have you ever wondered what might happen if you planted a kiss? No? Well, you are in for a delight when you share this book with your special child. Before you begin, ask your little one to predict what might happen if he or she planted a kiss. The question is sure to fire up their imaginations. It will also open a window into the way they think and feel which helps parents know and understand their children better.

Adoptive families can connect this book to adoption.: This story line can serve as a wonderful conversation starter. Ask kids what else they might “plant.” Then, have them predict what might happen. Compare the “harvest” of each emotion. Conversations like these can be a wonderful gateway to important conversations about deeply held adoption-related thoughts and feelings. so cute and so much fun to read

Very simple story, but so cute and so much fun to read. The illustrations are adorable too. This is one of those books where my kids can point out different things or add their own ideas without me getting frustrated because I'm trying to read the words. I rotate books on our mantle for the changing holidays and seasons, and this was perfect for our Valentine's display. We read it throughout the year, though, because it's so much fun.

Great message!

We absolutely love this book. While simple in its wording, the message is impactful. The book teaches children to spread their joy, to not be selfish with what makes them special, and that by sharing the joy in their own life with others, they will experience even more happiness. This message is essential for our kids in an ever growing world of entitlement and negativity. Stay positive. Help others. Share.

In addition to the great message, we also love the illustrations and texture in the book. Peter Reynolds is one of our favorites, and he definitely does not disappoint in "Plant A Kiss". Much like the wording, the illustrations are simple yet impactful. There is also glitter added to the "joy" on each page, which grows in size as the story grows. The glitter really adds eye appeal and sensory appeal with its texture.

This is an A+ picture book. You won't be disappointed!
