Ebert combines interviews and printed primary sources in this brilliant reconstruction of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Though accounting for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses. Ebert, a secondary school teacher in Wisconsin, tells their story chronologically, from the grunts' induction and training, through their arrival in Vietnam, their first encounters with battle and their final rendezvous with the airplane that would carry them home--the "freedom bird," one of the numerous military terms, abbreviations and Vietnamese words defined in the glossary. The infantrymen confronted environments from rice paddies to jungles, from densely populated cities to virtually empty countrysides. They fought in patrol skirmishes and in division-scale battles. They learned to kill, but few understood a war with no clear objectives. They survived, but most paid a price for their survival. The book belongs in every collection on America's longest and most controversial war.

Because of the relative lack of large, readily identifiable major battles during the Vietnam War (Hue, Khe Sanh, Hamburger Hill, etc.), military histories of the war can be difficult for the average reader to comprehend. Endless operations and campaigns without the anchor of a turning-point battle easily confuse and disorient. Vietnam literature retains an enthusiastic following, however, because it features a large number of oral histories and personal narratives. The reader follows the individual soldier rather than the large campaigns. Ebert, a high school history teacher, describes the combat experiences of 60 Army and Marine Corps infantrymen from basic training through their year in Vietnam. This is an outstanding example of history through the eyes of the ordinary person. Ebert's book is the finest of its type since Al Santoli's Everything We Had ( LJ 4/15/81). Highly recommended.

Vivid, creative use of oral history (here, with the remembrances woven together by incisive commentary) that takes the conventional combat-report format--induction, boot camp, raw recruit, seasoned vet--and breathes new life into the war experience. Ebert (who teaches high-school history and social studies in Wisconsin) interviewed approximately 40 Army grunts and Marines for this report, and also drew on interview-transcripts of South Dakota's Vietnam Veterans Oral History Project. He and his subjects paint the Southeast Asian battleground in its true, unglamorous colors: One soldier likens his first exposure to the country's heat ``to having someone hold a hair-dryer up to his nose''; the author says that Vietnam's pervasive odor was characterized by many as ``seminauseating and often likened to dead fish''). In this Vietnam, grenades are dangerous to friend and foe alike (one soldier describes standing in a chow line as someone accidentally pulls a pin, killing two and wounding 26), and ``humping'' the bush is a miserable, surreal existence, but one that most grunts stick to in order to avoid being branded a quitter--the lowest of the low--even though most days nothing is attained but total exhaustion. Also detailed are offensive operations, corpse mutilation, booby traps, drug use, racial conflict, and varied atrocities. As the soldiers' time in Vietnam gets ``short'' (Army men serve 12 months; Marines, 13) their primary aim becomes survival before their luck runs out. Finally--as detailed in a too brief epilogue--the soldiers fly home, muster out of the service, and then often must withstand criticism for their part in a hated war. Best down to earth, reality oriented Vietnam book I've ever

I've read many books on Vietnam and this is the best yet if you are interested in the real life of the grunts. A very down to earth and human look at the Vietnam experience. From prior to induction to return home. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the real nitty gritty of the average guy in Vietnam. As I said, best I've ever read!!!

Great Reference for Infantryman's Experience

When I first started researching the Vietman war, I happened to come across this book at the library--exactly what I was looking for since I wanted to understand the individual experience of the infantryman. I had been warned by veterans that a lot of inaccurate books were out there, and since the writer's credentials were simply that he was a high school teacher, I first read it with a somewhat skeptical eye. As I continued to read memoirs and histories and speak with veterans, though, I also kept coming back to this book. Finally I just broke down and bought it. Though I've only spot read various passages throughout the book, it is even-handed, always rings true, is consistent with other information I've gotten, and offers factual information to set things in context (I wish there was a little more of that). Ebert has done a great job getting vets to talk--not always easy--now maybe he should create an updated edition to flesh out the coming home aspects. I hope this author still teaches high school.

This is what the grunts really went through.

I would give this book more than 5 stars if possible. Wisconsin high school teacher James R. Ebert does a masterful job as he combines interviews and printed primary sources in this remarkable telling of the infantryman's experience during the Vietnam War. Ebert tells the story of the US Army and a few US Marine infantrymen during the Vietnam War. He takes their story from induction into the service through basic and advanced individual training, arrival in Vietnam, their first combat experiences, the first killed in action they experience, in some cases the soldier's death, and the freedom birds that take them back to the world. Ebert points out while infantryman accounted for less than 10% of the American troops in Vietnam, the infantry suffered more than 80% of the losses.

Ebert uses an interesting technique starting every chapter with a letter by Leonard Dutcher to his parents. Dutcher just wanted to do his part for God and country and go home at the end of his tour. In the last chapter, we find out that Dutcher was killed. It caught me off guard and really added to the impact of the book. Ebert takes many of the soldiers and Marines experiences word for word from the individual himself through interviews or letters. It is a collective look at similarities of the many infantry soldiers and Marines in the war. It is a very personal account from many points of view.

This is an important book in Vietnam War literature. This is what the grunts really went through. I was left with somewhat of feeling of guilt from reading the book. Why? I graduated high school in 1971. Some of my high classmates went to Vietnam and fought. My classmate Everett Maxwell was killed in action. I went to college and was ultimately commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry, went through airborne school and served three years active duty. My becoming an officer deferred my entry on active duty from 1971 to 1975. This is the reason for my reflective thoughts.

Doesn't get any better than this.

It is so good because Caples was in the mail order advertising business for forty-something years, and that's one of the few kinds of advertising that gets real feedback. Ads can be tested and the results can be compared. So Caples gives you FACTS rather than opinions about what works in advertising.
The book is very informative and also very interesting because Caples will show you two examples of ads he ran as a split-run and says "one sold three times more than the other; can you guess which one?" Then he'll tell you, and tell you WHY.
Not only that, but the book is extremely readable. I'm the author of Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I'm an expert on putting the most useful information into a readable form, and this book is as good as it gets. As David Ogilvy says in the introduction, "This is, without a doubt, the most USEFUL book about advertising that I have ever read." No more endorsement than that is needed!

Excellent - Best book on advertising and copywriting ever!

I have read this book twice cover to cover and refer to it almost everyday. If I could have given this book 6 stars I would have done it without reservation.
I have ordered and read at least 4 different books on copywriting and advertising in the last year. Most of the books have good ideas, but none of them describe the methods of writing headlines the way Caples does. He spends 4 chapters on it and let me tell you when he is finished you will know it cold! Personally that would have been enough to sell me on the book, but he doesn't stop there. He talks about scientific advertising to make sure you are writing ads that sell and not waste money. In addition, he talks through how to write the first paragraph and how to structure the copy. If You Want 5 Star Content, This Book is The One!

There's a reason why David Olgilvy calls this the most useful advertsing book he's ever read! I hold a Ph.D in Sales/Marketing and they simply DO NOT teach this money producing stuff enough at our colleges and universities! Instead, most of them opt for creative mush that's clever and makes for good awards and 5 minute speeches....but doesn't sell anything! If you want simple, brass tacks, powerful advertising advice, this book will be the most delapidated marketing resource in your library!
Is you're serious, RUN, don't walk to the checkout and pickup this incredible book. You'll pay guys like Dan Kennedy hundreds and even thousands of dollars for this advice...but it's all right here! Good stuff!

Roark T. Congdon is a professor of studio and history courses at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Seattle and has taught model building, sculpture, drawing, history, and design at the university and high school levels in both in the US and China for over 15 years.

Great step by step instructions!
By design for youth
I had to buy this book for a class. It is awesome for beginners! A couple of upperclassmen have been looking through it and think it is super helpful for them even though they have already been making models for a couple years. It is the most helpful art type textbook I have ever read. I have only had it a couple weeks, but I have learned proper cutting, gluing, and even how to perfectly curve mattboard and foam core without denting it. Instead of just talking about tools and stuff, this book actually explains the right way to use them, and what tools should be used for different materials. One of the best parts of the book is where it explains common mistakes model makers make, and how to avoid them. Lots of step by step instructions and pictures for every technique. some of the pictures are a little blurry though, it would be nice if they were clearer, but if you read the instructions and look at the pictures you will learn a ton!

Helpful with concise instructions.

I had recently took a model building class at my local community college and really didn't learn very much. I then purchased this book for a class I am taking now after tranfering to a University. I have learned more after only a couple hours of reading this book than I did from an entire semester at the community college. I was very frustrated, but now feel like I have been able to gain a real grasp on certain elements such as planning, understanding what type of adhesives to use and when, and how to properly cut and contruct compelx shapes such as curves, and odly pitched roofs. We had models do in class last week, most of the other student models had ragged edges and sloppy glue jobs. The professional look and cleanliness of my model stood out so much so that my professor actually used it as an example to the class on how to build a proper model. I couldn't believe it. After struggling so much with my previous class in community college, despite really making an effort and doing all the required reading, I was very nervous about spending the money for this book. I could not have made a better purchase. This book has really helped give me confidence and the believe in myself that I can succeed and do well in this field. To anyone starting out in architexture school this book is a must have.

Excellent text, mediocre illustrations

The text of this books is an excellent introduction and step-by-step guide to building models. It defines the different types of models and explains when each one is appropriate. It describes different types of materials and explains how to use them. It provides advice on setting up a workspace, and guides students through the entire model-making process, from planning to adding material finishes. A final chapter discusses entourage - the elements that provide scale, such as people and trees. The text is clear and concise. It assumes no prior knowledge and takes readers from the basic elements through more advanced techniques and more difficult materials.

The illustrations, however, are not equal to the text. With the exception of 6 pages of beautiful, glossy, full-color photographs in the middle, all the illustrations are black-and-white photographs. The b&w photographs are not particularly crisp, and the contrast isn't very high. The quality is barely adequate to the task of illustrating a particular type of model or step in the building process. In many instances, a simple b&w line drawing would have been much clearer.

If this were an inexpensive book, I would happily forgive the mediocre illustrations, but at the list price, I think the illustrations should be better than the ones I take with my cell phone.

Miles (Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats, etc.), who has been intimately involved in the documentation of the Beat scene, focuses here on an international aspect of Beat work: Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Gregory Corso's escape from "the conformism and Puritanism of fifties America" during the six years (1957-1963) they lived at a cheap hotel on Paris's Left Bank. During this period, the three pursued such now-famous creative endeavors as "Kaddish," Naked Lunch and "Bomb." Their important work during this time, particularly the "cut-up" method pioneered by Burroughs, had an important formative influence on the next generation of artists, according to Miles. Part scholarly study and part gossip-fest, this account traces the aesthetic, sexual and social goings-on in Paris: "Within the shelter of the Beat Hotel," Miles writes, "they had mapped out many of the paths that the 'sixties generation' was to actually follow: the recreational use of drugs and experiments with psychedelics..., investigations into magic and mysticism..., gay rights and sexual freedom , the legalization of 'pornography' and challenges to obscenity laws." The hotel on rue Git-le-Coeur, closed for nearly four decades now, still symbolizes the fruitful ground of collaborative creation among the Beats. The significance of this period in Paris for the Beats may be slightly exaggerated by Miles to justify this book-length study, but those interested in the lives of these cult figures will most likely forgive such overdetermination in the interests of learning in an entertaining narrative about important writers now considered American literary heroes. The cheap rooming house at nine rue Git-Le-Coeur became known as the Beat Hotel after several Beat writers made it their home in Paris. In this interesting blend of sexual gossip and literary scholarship, Miles, author of full-length biographies of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac, paints a vivid picture of literary life along the Left Bank in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He recounts not only the Beat writers' creative interactions with one other but their relations with such Frenchmen as Maurice Girodias, publisher of the Olympia Press, and Henri Michaux, an author who shared their fascination with the use of drugs to heighten consciousness. Miles also documents the influences of a number of European writers on the Beats, including Andr Breton, Louis-Ferdinand C line, and Sergei Esenin. Finally, he is particularly good at exploring the collaboration between Brion Gysin and Burroughs that led to their famous cut-up method. This is fun reading, especially for those steeped in the Beats. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

ok! but lots of repetition

I lived at number nine rue Git-le-Coeur from 1955 until 1958 and visited there often until 1960 and knew most of the people mentioned in the book. I was an ex-Korean War Vet studying on the G.I. Bill as were thousands of "Americans in Paris" in the 50,s. I can attest that most of the events related are accurate. The Hotel was special because of the freedom the owner granted us: cooking in our rooms, decorating them, allowing overnight guests, etc.) I believe it was the Hotel that helped form the "Beats" rather then the other way around since it was a creative beehive before they got there. My main argument with the book is the insistance of the hotel as being sordid, rat-ridden and dirty. This was not true. I never saw a four-legged rat there and the only roaches were the cannibis kind. The rooms were swept and mopped daily. It was a great place to be even before the "Beats" arrived and should not be defamed by exaggeration at the expense of the wonderful blue haired MadameRachou who owned it and took care of us, her Americains.

Sex and Drugs and What it Beat

This book is an important, often funny, illuminating look at an extraordinary period in the history of popular culture. It will be enjoyed by anyone with even the slimmest interest in the history of western literature, art and the moral evolution of western man in the waning years of the second millennium. The squalid Paris rooming house at rue-Git-Le-Coeur didn't have a name. It was just an address to which, because of its arts friendly management and cheap rent, luminaries of the "beat movement" lived and labored between 1957 and 1963. In this book, which takes as its title the colloquial name for Madame Rachou's establishment, Barry Miles continues his informal history of the Beats which, in addition to this offering includes biographies of Burroughs, Ginsberg, and Kerouac. Burroughs and Ginsberg, along with Gregory Corso and Brion Gysin form the fulcrum on which this history turns. If there are any doubts as to the absolute madness of these people, their exuberant embrace of drugs, their extravagant pursuit of sex in all of its variety, their tireless devotion to literature and to each other, this book should lay them to rest. The matter-of-fact description of life at The Beat Hotel is perhaps the greatest strength of this book. There is no question that the sensational and lurid descriptions of the Beats that were fodder for the popular prss in the late 50's and early 60's werre in no way exaggerations. The depiciton of "beatniks" as decadent, impoverished, culturally alienated, drug maniacs seems, after reading this book to be a rather tepid underestimate of just how extreme these cultural icons actually were. But Mr. Miles, in his at once familiar yet detached tone, manages to affirm the facts of "beat" existence while in no way diminishing the people he is describing. The productivity of the principals during this period would be asonishing under any circumstances; under the particular circumstances it seems simply not possible. And yet is was during these years that Naked Lunch found its final form; that Kaddish and The Lion for Real were written; that cut-ups were discovered and explored, and the Dream Machine invented; that The Soft Machine, Nova Express, and The Ticket That Exploded were composed, cut-up, compiled, and first presented to the public. This book, filling as it does a neglected portion of Beat history is an honest, accessible, amusing, and ultimately inspiring chronicle that no one should neglect adding to their collection.

American Bohemians in Paris

This book is an exploration of the American beat movement during a time period in which most of its major representatives, (with the exception of Jack Kerouac and Gary Snyder) were in Paris at a cheap, nameless hotel located at Rue Git-Le-Coeur, and managed by one Madame Rachon. The hotel was cheap and unsanitary. As long as the guests paid their bills, Madame Rachon allowed them a broad range of freedom in their eccentric lifestyles. The beat hotel was home to the beats as well as to various artists, models, and other bohemians before it closed in 1963.

The book includes wonderful bigraphical pictures of Allen Ginsberg, his lover Peter Orlovsky, Gregory Corso, William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin (whose name was unfamiliar to me), and others who stayed at the beat hotel. There is detailed documentation on the activities of each during their stay in the beat hotel with some thought given to why each of these people are important and worth knowing something about.

I found the discussion of the day to day life in the hotel the most rewarding part of the book together with a discussion of the relationships of the beats, and other guests, to Olympia Press, which published many of them together with many forgetable works of pornography at that time available only with difficulty in the United States.

The book invites reflection on the nature of the beat movement and of the broader movement of bohemianism as it developed in the 19th Century. What were the beats looking for? They were full of unconventional, shocking behavior, particularly in the abuse of drugs and sex as these are documented graphically in the book. They were also serious, had a dedication to literature, a willingness to explore and to come to terms with themselves, a desire for change. The beats were perhaps the most cohesive literary movement 20th Century America has produced and in some cases produced works of merit. Miles's discussion of the work and achievement of these writers encourages one to want to know more.

Miles ties the beats in to later developments in pop culture in the 1960s: rock and roll, psychedelics, open sexuality. This to me is claiming too little and too much. It trivializes this movement, I think, to watch the commercialization that took place during the 1960. The beats were isolated, troubled, and searching individuals who, in their productive days, neither had nor wanted the glare of the media. What they did was for themselves and what we make of them is a matter for reflection and not for subsequent 1960s hype.

I read Miles biography of Kerouac and was moved by it to read this book. I wasn't disappointed. He is a thoughtful writer on a significant American literary movement.

A Great Book!!!

When I read a Christian book I generally look for one of three experiences: to be challenged by good Bible teaching, to learn from someone else's practical experience, or to read an author who can help me to better hear from the Holy Spirit. In Sexual Healing I found all three. The book was more than just information; it was an encounter with the Living God. I liked it so much I read it three times. I also plan to read it again at some time in the future.

David Kyle Foster is a man who has experienced the difficulty of living the Christian life while recovering from severe sexual addiction and homosexuality. He writes heartfelt words based on his experience. Perhaps my favorite part of his book is that although he presents a tremendous amount of excellent information, he also recognizes that only the Holy Spirit can reveal to a person the exact details of their particular problem. This closely matched my experience in recovering from my own issues. Sexual Healing has been a great help to me, and I am sure it will be for many others also.

I like the empathy but don't trust the advice.

This book may be helpful in one way: if you are an evangelical who was molested as a child and you have never dealt with the trauma, you may appreciate this book. However, the advice given here is in direct contradiction with every medical association and even the ex-gay leaders who admitted nobody changed from homosexual to heterosexual. Foster worked for many years as a working girl for gay clients. Today he makes a more lucrative living preaching against LGBT folks. The book is written in a sympathetic style, but I simply think the advice is not what you will get if you go to any professional psychologist or former ex-gay member.

"With the publication of this latest atlas the bar has been raised for future treatises. Although many will value this volume specifically as a reference text, it is more - much more. It is the amalgamation of the expertise of Veeck and Zanuniviae with the expertise of the painstakingly selected contributing authors that makes this volume a comprehensive and valuable treatise on the biology of the human blastocyst. It is a stellar scientific contribution and is the best I have seen on this subject. Sublime work on living well

This is a profound book on the subject of living with integrity, presence, love, and power. This book is not written from any particular theology, but will provide valuable teaching for anyone who wishes to enhance his connection to God and world through mastery of life. James Allen is one of the wisest writers I've ever had the pleasure to read.
