Awesome book and it IS true!!!

This is a wonderfully written book that gives the non-scientologist a real account of what goes on in their own backyard, behind closed doors!! I was a scientologist for 3 1/2 years and thankfully I got out. They are liars and also manipulative, hateful, and soo money grubbing it is unreal. While I was there and on some courses, they constantly harassed me about getting more money and signing up for more programs. I told them I did not have any at the moment, and they told me to borrow it from someone, take a loan or run up my credit cards! Can you imagine? They said nothing should stand in the way of "clearing the planet", not even money. Fortunately, I did not have to go through what Margery went through, but she is definitely a survivor and I am so glad that she finally made her way out of this evil, manipulative cult. They will suck you dry for every penny you have, and then throw you out on the streets, once you have no more. It is not a religion, it is a "business." As one lady put it-"It is the only church I have ever been to that had a cashier's booth." That says it all. Please stay away from the Church of Scientology. They will ruin your life. Thank you for telling your story Margery. If even one person is deterred or helped through this book, it is worth it!! You are a very strong woman!

I admire your courage, Margery!!! I am someone who has been negatively touched by the cult of scientology and your experience has helped me to understand my ex's personality traits: Lack of emotion, abandonment of the kids, no drive, no ambition and the words that "saving the planet is more important than family". I also realize I have no power over the brain washing that was done. It is a dangerous cult that takes away reality and promises impossible things, and then demands money. The harrassment is unbelievable - the late night phone calls and all the junk mail are relentless. I hope you all the best and I thank you for writing about your experiences. You have helped me more than I can describe!

The Road to Xenu: Life Inside Scientology

Margery Wakefield is an ex Scientologist, as I also have been for years. She writes about the basics of getting involved and going through the cult, and I can confirm what she writes is true and a lot I experienced also. I love the step by step she takes you through. Tells her feelings and thoughts thus helping the reader become aware of how indoctrination occurs, a very important step. In Chapter 3 she shows examples of this and delves into the understanding which shows how this is mind control. Margery goes on to much more detail of the secrets in the scientology teaching and beliefs. Since she had joined the Sea Organization, she tells of the many experiences you'll find quite interesting.

This well written book is really about life inside the so called church and not just a story but really what life is like inside of Scientology and she takes you from her very beginning. A Must Read for anyone curious or wanting to know about and what they would be in for, should they have interest in this cult. Also as a public person myself, meaning I didn't join staff but was a member, it helped me to understand what my former friends went through behind the scenes.

Revisiting A Classic

The Caine Mutiny was Herman Wouk’s first post World War II novel. Published in 1951, the novel qualified as contemporary fiction. Sixty-six years later it’s a classic coming-of-age story that reads like historical fiction.
The story isn’t about the U.S.S. Caine or even the ubiquitous Captain Queeg with his ball bearings. The Caine Mutiny is about Willie Keith, a spoiled rich kid who finds himself in a world unlike anything he’s ever known. A world in which he must make a decision that can and does destroy careers.
Willie wants to follow the right path. But which path is that? He could obey the orders of a superior officer, and perhaps go down with his ship. He could believe Lt Keefer’s assessment that the captain is unfit for duty and still obey orders. He could support his friend Lt Maryk, a man with true skills in seamanship. But what does that mean? It could mean dissuading Maryk from taking control of the ship. It could mean supporting Maryk’s decision to do so. And the decision must be made in the middle of a typhoon.
The Caine Mutiny won the Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for good reasons. Wouk’s words effortlessly take the reader aboard the Caine and into World War II mine-sweeping activities. He brings out the stresses of life in close quarters. Even more important, Wouk develops a classic theme as Keith struggles to become a man.

A good old-fashioned novel that entertains and keeps readers engaged.

"The Caine Mutiny" is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk. Written in 1950, it tells the story of a fictional mutiny that takes place aboard a decrepit U.S. Navy destroyer- minesweeper during World War II.

This is an outstanding novel in every respect. It tells its story through the eyes of Ensign Willie Keith, a newly minted naval reserve officer who reports aboard the "USS Caine" as his first assignment. The "Caine" is a broken down, World War I vintage "rust-bucket," with a slovenly crew and an outwardly hard-nosed captain, Lt. Commander William DeVriess. Keith and DeVriess take an immediate dislike to each other, and are constantly at odds.

Keith is glad when DeVriess is relieved as ship's captain by Lt. Commander Philip Queeg, who appears at first as an outwardly affable but by-the-book officer. Hopes initially rise that life aboard the "Caine" will get better, but it soon becomes evident that things are going to be much worse under Queeg's command. A series of incidents occur that show Queeg to be an incompetent commander; an overbearing tyrant who browbeats his officers and crew, blames everyone else but himself for his mistakes, displays cowardice under fire, obsesses about petty incidents aboard ship, and displays personality traits that reveal an unstable mind.

Three of the "Caine's" officers - Keith, Lt. Tom Keefer, and the ship's executive officer, Lt. Steve Maryk - all eventually become convinced that Queeg is so mentally unstable that he should be replaced as captain of the "Caine." Maryk and Keefer initially intend to request Queeg's relief from higher headquarters, but back out at the last minute.

Soon after that, the "Caine" finds itself as one of several ships riding out a typhoon in the Pacific. The ship is soon in mortal danger; Queeg issues a series of orders that will only make matters worse for the ship, possibly resulting in its loss with all hands. Maryk countermands Queeg's orders and relieves the captain. Keith and Keefer are present at the time and concur with Maryk's decisions.

I won't give away any more of the story. You'll have to read this outstanding novel to find out what happens to the "Caine" and its officers and crew.

I first read "The Caine Mutiny" when I was still in high school, some forty-plus years ago. I re-read it just a few short weeks ago, and enjoyed it just as much the second time I read it as I did the first. It's one of those good, old-fashioned novels that has a fascinating plot, extremely well-developed characters, and a style of prose that keeps readers engaged throughout its 500-plus pages. Above all, "The Caine Mutiny" book entertains. Highly recommended.

A true personal favourite.

The Caine Mutiny is one of the greatest books I have ever read - and I've read many. I have read this book so often I couldn't put a number to this reality. It is insightful to an extraordinary degree as to the lives and behaviour of people with a special focus on the WW2 Navy. These insights can only have emerged from a man (Herman Wouk) who has lived them. Perhaps he is one of the characters or perhaps all of them given the infinite complexity of what it is to be human especially under the stress of war time pressures. Tom Keefer's likening ( a key character) of his moment of cowardice to that of "Lord Jim" - he refers to himself as "Lord Tom" with his genius like capacity for irony - and its defining impact on his life is overwhelmingly poignant ("Don't forget Willy - I jumped") and might function as a warning to us all.
I could go on but I have learned much about life from this book. It is so important that I have numerous hard copies and a Kindle copy so I can pretty much have it with me wherever I go.

About the Author
Philip Butterworth is Reader in Medieval Theatre at the School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds. He is the author of Theatre of Fire: Special Effects in Early English and Scottish Theatre, and has published widely in journals on the subject of Medieval Theatre, including essays in 'Medieval English Theatre'. He is currently working, with Joslin McKinney, on The Cambridge Introduction to Scenography, to be published in 2006.

An important addition to conjuring and stage literature

Coming, as it does, from an academic author and the Cambride University Press, there's no surprise in the scholarly, and often pedantic, character of the prose found in this publication. It draws heavily from classical conjuring-related texts such as Scott's DISCOUERIE OF WITCHCRAFT, and to a lesser degree, Ady's A CANDLE IN THE DARK. The extended quotations in the text are of a font size that put a strain my aging eyes as well, but they'll likely prove no problem for most readers.

Author Butterworth excels in bringing to light numerous passages from contemporary medieval and renaissance financial documents, listing various jugglers (conjurers), expressing their play dates, the contents of their programs and what they were paid. His listing of connections to the fraudulent use of trickery by the church, among other institutions and individuals, is also quite interesting, as are the conjuring-related "feats of activity." The theatrical "special effects" noted are very interesting as well. As noted, a fair amount of the content is found in other works, including the profiles of several personalities the author sketches. Butterworth credits Edwin Dawes (who wrote the Foreword), perhaps the world's leading current exponent of magic history, for his assistance. Dawes hand seems apparent in some of the profiles provided, which is a good thing. This text is, however, unique in its combination of information from the periods discussed. I believe it's safe to say there exists no other work to date capable of matching MAGIC ON THE EARLY ENGLISH STAGE's comprehensive content. All of the information is thoroughly credited and annotated. Indeed, the Appendix and Notes sections comprise nearly a third of the book. The book's price is more in line with what one would expect to pay for a college text than for a smallish hardbound tome for the general reader. As a student of magic history, though, I very much enjoyed it and believe those with similar interests will as well.

About the Author
Arthur Scott Bailey was born in Vermont on November 15, 1877. He was an American writer, intellectual and author of more than forty children's books, including the famous “Tuck-Me-In Tales,” the “Sleepy-Time Tales,” and the “Slumber-Town Tales.” One of his most admirable qualities was the fact that he never used language that talked down to children; instead, he frequently used words beyond their average vocabulary in an effort to broaden their knowledge. Bailey was a graduate of Harvard. He died on October 17, 1949.

My Son's Favorite Book Ever

My son, reading this book at age 6-1/2, absolutely loved this book.He's since read and loved more stories by Arthur Scott Bailey... but this was his favorite. Now at age 10, and many, many books later; if asked, my son will still list this as an all-time favorite. The Bailey stories combine cute, fun animal characters in stories that are sure to engage your child -- but better than that, Bailey combines these fictional characters and stories with real facts about animals, nature, and wildlife. A perfect choice for kids if you're looking for educational fiction. I recommend you go to [...] and print out all the ASB stories available.

A Jolly Good Time

Arthur Scott Bailey was particularly accomplished at incorporating nature facts and lore into his bedtime stories series, but was also happy to follow the tradition of wise owls, crafty foxes, and the like. You little reader will meet a delightful, clever and happy character here, but also learn a bit about robins.

Bailey wrote more than forty children's books between 1915 and 1929. This volume was published in 1917 as part of his series "Tuck-Me-In Tales". He was a contemporary of Thornton Burgess, who wrote between 1910 and the 1950's, and his style, themes and characters are very similar to those of Burgess. The Newark Evening News, as quoted in a Wikipedia article, described his work as follows: "Mr. Bailey centered all his plots in the animal, bird and insect worlds, weaving natural history into the stories in a way that won educator's approval without arousing the suspicions of his young readers. He made it a habit to never 'write down' to children and frequently used words beyond the average juvenile vocabulary, believing that youngsters respond to the stimulus of the unfamiliar." That description is exactly spot on for this book and for the other books that are Kindle freebies on the Amazon site; it looks like all 40 are available for download.

These books are cheerful, inventive and exciting. They do not minimize the dangers of the animal world. While the Burgess books, ("Old Mother West Wind", "Danny Meadow Mouse", and so on), are a bit mild and sentimental, the characters in Bailey's books can be grumpy and predatory, and will bite when aroused. That said, this is not "The Call of Wild", filled with violence and survival tales. Traditional virtues - honesty, reliability, loyalty, perseverance - are encouraged and rewarded. And the stories are generally peaceful and calm, as befits collections of bedtime stories.

So, if you would to sample an older, but not oldfashioned, set of tales for your littler listeners/readers, it seems that this volume or a similar volume, (just pick your favorite animal), might serve very well.

Decided to go to law school and the next LSAT's ...

Decided to go to law school and the next LSAT's were in a month. I only had four weeks to prepare and had been our of school for a 25 years. No test prep classes were available so I decided to try these books. After a few weeks my averages on the practice tests improved to over 160. If you decide to try these just be sure to review your wrong answers.

The Best

These books are the most inexpensive source of real LSATs to study from. In addition, they also contain several sample comparative reading comprehension passages and questions, which were introduced in June 2007. I haven't seen a better source for practice of these types of questions.

Some will say that these tests vary significantly from the more recent tests. While I agree with this statement, the underlying foundation of logic and reasoning is the same.

Simply put, these books are a must-have for any LSAT prep.
