About the Author
NEIL C. SCHOFIELD is the principal of FMT Ltd, a UK-based company offering training services in the areas of treasury, derivatives, capital markets and risk management to financial institutions, central banks and corporations worldwide. Neil was Global Head of Financial Markets Training at Barclays Capital from 2001 to 2008. He teaches primarily on the rates business, covering all of the major asset classes and their respective derivative products from foreign exchange through to commodities. Before joining Barclays Capital, he was a director at Chisholm-Roth Training for 4 years, where he was responsible for provision of training services for a number of blue chip global investment banks. Clients included Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan Chase. He started his training career at Chase Manhattan Bank, where he was originally employed as an internal auditor. Over a period of nine years, he conducted numerous internal and external training seminars including the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve System in the USA. He has also held positions with Security Pacific Hoare Govett (now trading as Bank of America) and Lloyds TSB. Neil holds a B.Sc. in Economics from Loughborough University and an MBA from Manchester Business School. He was elected as a Fellow of the IFS School of Finance (formerly the Chartered Institute of Bankers) in 1999. Neil was appointed as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Reading ICMA centre in April, 2007. He is author of the book Commodity Derivatives: Markets and Applications published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd in October 2007.

TROY BOWLER joined Barclays Capital in London in 2002 and is currently a Managing Director within Distribution, based in Singapore. Before joining Barclays Capital, he held positions at Deutsche Bank in London, where he was part of their highly-regarded global fixed income and relative value research team; PaineWebber; and Bank of Tokyo Capital Markets (UK), where he was Chief Economist; and Charterhouse Investment Management Limited, where he managed money-market funds, including the #1 ranked GBP unit trust according to Micropal (acquired by The McGraw-Hill Companies in 1997). He is a former member of the Institute of Investment Management and Research (IIMR), now known as CFA UK, Examination Committee where he helped revamp the IIMR's examinations – widening the remit to encompass fixed income professionals as opposed to focussing almost exclusively on equity markets. Troy holds a B.Sc. in Economics from Loughborough University and an M.Sc. in Economics from London University.

NOT a relative value guide, more like Fixed Income 101

Despite the authors' claim that "this definition of relative value is a valid one" in the preface, the authors of the book also freely admit this book is for university students who have difficulty digesting even class material (From the preface: "student... who want a book that is not dedicated to "squiggly d's" and stochastic calculus"). Practitioner with even a year or two of training in interest rate RV and/or volatility arbitrage could breath through this book with little to gain, and should save their money. Congratulations on your marketing and clever wrapper, but content of the book falls completely flat.

Anyone looking to purchase a book titled "relative value guide" is not looking to be educated on PRODUCT DEFINITION of Constant Maturity Products in chapter 6.6 out of 8 chapters yet this is what I am looking at. Other important topic in today's fixed income RV trading such as conditional curve trades either ended up with a meager page of brief DESCRIPTION but not the logic/driver behind the trade, or nothing at all (in the case of many other interest rate RV strategies that I can think of and looking to read further on).

Does what it says on the tin.

This book is an in-depth, moderately paced guide to the many different ways that relative value views can be expressed in fixed income. The first half of the book takes the reader through a fixed income product refresher, price drivers, risk concepts and the relationships that exist between the various fixed income products. All of this information is fundamental to understanding how relative value trades work and what they mean. The second half of the book is dedicated to the variety of relative value trades that are commonly used in fixed income. It can be read all in one go or it can be used as a guide or reference book.
- For the new hire in the fixed income marketplace who wants a deeper understanding of the types of relatively value trades that exist, this is a good broad overview book.
- For finance professionals who need a refresher on the basic fixed income products, the first chapter provides product fundamentals but can be skipped for the reader who is already equipped with this knowledge.

From the second chapter onward, the authors introduce a relative value framework that they use throughout the book. Because a market price is about the different views that market participants have, understanding different relative value frameworks in addition to different relative value trades is always valuable.

The combination of the authors together is a good one. Mr Schofield currently is a financial market trainer and Mr Bowler is a fixed income professional, both with decades of experience. Between them, they can identify the areas that often cause confusion in financial markets and ensure they are clearly explained and they can also ensure that the examples are practical and current.

All those who read Guinn's account of Bonnie and Clyde were impressed by the unprecedented level of detail he brings to the story. But a few seemed to think that all of Guinn's data got in the way of the chase. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel admitted that the level of detail posed the book's "only problem," while acknowledging that "the legend still stands under its own power." Indeed, reviewers were generally pleased by Guinn's ability to add new layers to Bonnie and Clyde's brief, hardscrabble lives and to shed new light on their impulses without weighing them down. Reviewers were particularly interested in the idea of the duo as heroes of the Great Depression, with obvious anxiety that that era might not seem so distant these days. Yes, reviewers are prone to provide enthusiastic reviews for a newspaper's books editor; yet Go Down Together is still a strong book.

Almost 75 years ago, the four-year murder and robbery spree of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow ended in a hail of bullets on a desolate Louisiana road. During those four years, the Barrow Gang held up a few banks, knocked over numerous grocery stores, killed several police officers, and successfully cast themselves as latter-day Robin Hoods struggling against an unjust social order. This work strives, successfully for the most part, to strip away the sensationalism and view the couple and their exploits accurately. Less lyrical than Paul Schneider in Bonnie and Clyde: The Legend behind Their Lives (2009), Guinn, an investigative journalist, uses a conventional narrative approach and utilizes primary sources effectively. Here, Bonnie is revealed as a petite, intelligent, but frustrated young woman whose thirst for excitement made her vulnerable to a more worldly and big-talking Clyde. Despite her image as a gun-toting moll, she apparently never fired a shot at anyone. Guinn describes Barrow as an almost comically inept thief who was physically weak, belligerent, and out to avenge himself upon a “system” that he believed mistreated him. For both crime aficionados and general readers with an interest in the era, this book is of great value. --Jay Freeman

Simply the Best Book on Bonnie and Clyde

I just finished this book for the second time, and I enjoyed the read better than the first one. I've long been an enthusiast of 1930s crime books and articles and have read almost everything I could find on Bonnie and Clyde. There are several books about the couple: many of them simply rehash what's been said time and time again; a couple written by B&C family members are obviously biased toward the two criminals, sometimes outright lying; a few, however are excellent, offering new information gained from primary research and a fresh perspective. Guinn's book tops them all. His research is meticulous, and he leaves very few questions unanswered--if any.

His covers every shootout, big and small, with great care to get the who shot whom, who missed, how bad were the wounds, etc. correct. It is a huge plus that the man is a very good writer. He brings the events to life--even the ones you've read about many times before. I guarantee that you will find bits and pieces throughout the entire book that you never knew--regardless of how much you think you know about the pair.

The climax is, of course, the ambush in which Bonnie and Clyde are gunned down. There's a good chance you've read about it and/or seen it depicted in film and on TV. As good or far-fetched as other accounts may be, Guinn gets it right. From the weapons each of the six posse members used, where, precisely, they were positioned: how many feet apart--Guinn has done his homework and has left nothing uncovered--to who fired first, whose bullet hit which victim and, perhaps most importantly, who fired the final shots into an already dead or dying, Bonnie Parker.

Guinn goes further than researching their lives, crimes, and era; he offers keen insight into what Clyde or Bonnie was probably thinking at a certain juncture, why a life was spared or taken, what was running through Frank Hamer's mind before, during, and after the ambush. The author brings everything together and does a remarkably fair job throughout. He leaves no detail out, narrating each moment of each crime to let us see the ugliness, senselessness, and tragedy. And he shows the monster that Clyde Barrow often was. But he also reveals Barrow as a man who cared deeply for his family and Bonnie and who, at least in his own mind, lived by a moral code. Guinn offers no excuses for Bonnie and Clyde.

Was society partly to blame for Barrow's decision to become a career criminal? Before you answer, read the chapters about Clyde's incarceration in Huntsville prison and how he lost one job after another because of his past crimes. There is no easy answer, and Guinn knows this. He allows the reader to make up his or her own mind.

I recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested any facet of crime and/or the Depression era. It is, for now, the last and best word on the Bonnie and Clyde story.

I've read a few books on this topic, and remember watching the old 1967 movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, and I'd been wanting this book for a while. So I finally got it and was pleased with it.

I found it to be true to life, showing and telling us how the outlaws were not so slick all the time, and it cost them dearly at times. Not the super criminals some folks made them out to be, but just learning as they went, and screwing up their fair share of the time. Their so-called glamorous life was often lonely and miserable, spent on the run and far from loved ones and comfort. Just when they'd think they had somewhere they could rest their bones for a minute, they would be spotted or just think they had been, and off they would have to run again. Often having to abandon some of their things, depending on how much warning they'd gotten, leaving them to have to steal more. Or putting their trust in the wrong cohorts.

Medical help was difficult to come by on the run, and they often had to make do with what they could get at pharmacies for serious wounds from bullets, etc. Very fact filled, and so many details. Very enjoyable if you like true crime and history.

Go down together was "fantabulous". This book gave me a better understanding of how Clyde began and continued his life of crime. I have an understanding of how the Dallas police hounded him until he went to prison where he became a hardened person. My great uncle Malcolm Stanley Davis was a Tarrant County deputy sheriff and was killed by the barrow gang. The mention of this event is recorded in this book and it is recorded exactly how the story was told by my father .

This book gave me an appreciation for Bonnie and Clyde I had never had, I am sorry uncle Malcolm was killed by the Barrow gang and I have no antipathy for any of the Parkers or Barrows. I went to school with Jimmy Barrow and we never had any trouble.

About the Author
John Coates is a senior research fellow at the University of Cambridge. He previously worked for Goldman Sachs and ran a trading desk for Deutsche Bank in New York. In 2004 he returned to Cambridge to research the biology of financial risk-taking. His work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Financial Times, and has been cited in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, New Scientist, Wired and TIME. Coates has appeared on CNN, CNBC, BBC, CBS Evening News and Good Morning America. He was born and raised in Canada and now lives in England with his wife and two sons.

interesting work on neurophysiology and impact on risk taking

The Hour between the Dog and the Wolf is about risk taking, the nervous system and our biochemistry and how they all relate to each other in various feedback mechanisms. The book is both a combination of a scientific introduction to the way the nervous system and body work together and a fictional narrative of the trading floor in a bank. The narrative is used to describe the real time emotional changes felt by traders in response to their changing risk and profit environments. The book is informative and readable and I came out of it better understanding myself. The book is split into 4 distinct parts.

The first section is titled Mind and Body in the Financial Markets. The backdrop is the internet bubble and questions of exuberance in markets is pondered. The author introduces testosterone and cortisol as potential active molecules in impacting decision. Basic concepts of mind body separation are included. The author then goes on to describe the mind as facilitating the body. He discusses how if one view our purpose in life as to move, then the mind is just an elaborate mechanism to facilitate that movement more productively. This helps give the platform to understand us as being always being a vehicle for movement and that we should not deny the signals our body sends us.

The second section - Gut Thinking discusses the way our instincts can propogate through the nervous system. He discusses how our body's instincts operate on a much faster speed than our computational thought. This subject matter is similar to that of many behavioural scientists and is akin to Kahneman in fast and slow thinking. The value of relying on instincts is studied and our instincts are shown to be very good at pattern recognition which can fail when we are faced with randomness. The inclusion of our muscle responses to our nervous system and our internal feedbacks helps give an overall view of our various mind body relationships.

The 3rd section Seasons of the Market discusses various market regimes and how our body chemistry in each of those regimes is different. Searching for opportunity, riding waves of profit or enduring catastrophic losses are all discussed via narratives of characters the author uses. It helps make sense of real life situations and how we are all biased agents when it comes down to it. This section is where the author really weaves in the impact on financial decision making.

The author concludes with discussing the difference between various types of people and how environment and activity can affect our instincts and our feedback mechanisms. We all have some plasticity and though we inevitably are impacted by the stresses around us we can handle them differently and experience matters. The author then goes on to give partial solutions to dampening the positive and negative feedback loops our body creates in risk taking behaviour to improve our financial system.

All in all The Hour Between the Dog and the Wolf is a very informative account of the way we work in stressful environments and how those environments affect the way we think and act in an active fashion. I much preferred the scientific explanation instead of the specific impact on trading as the lessons are very broad and are relevant to much more than trading. One does not come out of reading the book having a clear path to more robust financial management as that is extremely challenging but one does come through it with more insight about how we work.

Investors are well served by studying behaviorial and decision-making psychology broadly and then selectively transferring that knowledge to financial markets. Arguably, the most influential readings come from authors who are not directly involved in financial markets. For example, the Psychology of Intelligence Analysis by former CIA staffer Richard Heuer captures the pitfalls of making decisions when faced with incomplete information. Stepping back further, to readings about the emerging discipline of neuroeconomics, requires a basic understanding of brain science and physiology. There are some useful layman's guides to these subjects, such as Brain Rules by John Medina but what's been missing is a book that ties together a cohesive explanation of why your brain and physiology drive your behavior and how this collective impact can translate into a greater understanding of market behavior. The Hour Between Dog and Wolf succeeds in this objective. Using both plain language and vivid trading room stories, author John Coates has written an important book for finance industry professionals who want to expand their understanding of the biological underpinnings of behaviorial finance.

The book's fictitious examples of trading floor scenarios are particularly effective. Science always becomes more interesting when its explained with personalized situations. Coates has succeeded in connecting the neuroscience with the behaviorial / cognitive psychology that's most relevant to investors. Finally, the 'suggested reading' section is excellent, a primer for further study that's accessible to non-scientists.

The biochemistry of market behavior

This is probably the most unique perspective on risk taking I've read. Coates explains the biology of how "human nature" causes us to think differently when under market stresses that appear loaded with opportunity or with danger. His former experience as a trader was a clear advantage. The biochemistry is nearly always clear. This book would be especially helpful to any experienced amateur investor.

Ruth Cherrington has presented us with a book charming in its nostaglia; insightful in its analysis of the present and future of Working Men's Club and challenging in its analysis of shortcomings and possibilities for the future.
This is a book for those with a genuine interest in the success of the Working Men's Club movement. It is light reading and, at the same time, has enough meat to really get your teeth into.
It is a well balanced book that can be truly enjoyed by, and prove an inspiration to, all who read it.

S. D. Perry's Resident Evil, The Umbrella Conspiracy was a great book. If you liked the game, you'll love the book. It handles the action and plot well and describes each persons perspective of the adventure extremely well. It's written from multiple characters points of view with obvious exaggeration to increase the intensity of the horror. Flashbacks occur during the conflicts with the zombies to show the personalities of the characters that are trying to survive. Foreshadowing was another literary device that Perry uses in this novel to keep the readers interested and full of suspense. A negative about this book is that Perry expects the reader to know the environment, mood, and origin of each character in this novel from playing the game so would make the story difficult to follow if you have never played the game. This story follows the adventure of a special task force referred to as S.T.A.R.S. They have been called in to investigate mysterious happenings in an old abandoned mansion, or at least they think it is abandoned. Can they escape this mansion and survive; you'll have to read this book to find out. If you like scary books, you'll be glad you did.

I wasn't sure how well Perry could write this book, seeing how it has two different story lines for Chris and Jill. Despite this Perry has created a masterpiece. She has actually run both storylines in parrallel with each other. I am a big fan of Resident Evil and have got all the games so far and have only just ventured into the books. This is the first one I have read, I got it on a saturday and started reading it the second I got home and could not stop reading it, I finished the whole thing in the one day. This book handels the action and the plot well, it also describes each persons perspective of the adventure very well. A great telling of the original video game

The Umbrella Conspiracy is the first in a series of adaptations of the popular Capcom survival horror video game series written by S.D. Perry. Fans of the first game will be pleased to find that this book is a near perfect re-telling of the storyline in the first Resident Evil video game as we are introduced to Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Albert Wesker, and the rest of the first game's characters as we see them thrust into the battle for their lives against a horde of zombies, mutated dgos, hunters, and plenty more grisly creatures while trying to escape the infamous secluded mansion. Perry's storytelling adds nearly the same degree of suspense that the game featured. and her character development of the characters actually makes the reader care about what happens to them; something the game didn't do. All in all, if you've never read any of Perry's Resident Evil books but are a fan of the game series, then I strongly suggest picking this, and the following books, up.

The very best book of its kind - by Winston's son and grandson

This book is heavily pro-Israel, so don't expect it to be otherwise. That said, it is an exhilarating and detailed story of how David slayed at least two Goliaths in a war fought at an incredible pace over the course of just six days. The key to victory was the IAF's complete destruction of the Egyptian air force, at the very outset of the war. The detailed description of how this was done is alone worth the price of admission. I was there in June of 1967. This book captures something of the national euphoria which followed the war.
