About the Author

Igor S. Ivanov has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 1998. He began his career at the prestigious and pro-reform Institute for the World Economy and International Relations, then a division of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1973 he entered the Soviet diplomatic corps, where he served as a professional diplomat in various capacities and eventually became the USSR's Ambassador to Spain in 1991. Ivanov remained in Madrid as the new Russian Federation's Ambassador until 1994, when he was appointed First Deputy Foreign Minister. Henry A. Kissinger is chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm. He was Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977, serving under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He also served as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from 1969 to 1975.

The Wizard of Oz and Foreign Policy

I had wanted to comment on this book previously, but had refrained. The news today of yet another state takeover of an independent Russian television network finally prompts me to write. I mean no disrespect to the Russian foreign minister, but merely voice my opinion as a private citizen.
In the movie "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy and her friends finally are allowed in to meet the "Wizard" they are told by the grandiose image on the screen to "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain". In this hopeful analysis by the Russian foreign minister, the reader gets the feeling that the little man from Kansas has nothing over the current Russian administration. While Ivanof is a talented diplomat, and makes some interesting points in general terms about Russia's position in a both historical and modern context, the reader is asked to accept a mature, accountable and democratic Russian foreign policy as a fait acompli. Barely more than a decade into Russia's new experiment in democracy, the author claims parliament, public opinion and the press all are taken into account when formulating policy. This seems to be optimistic at best.
Ivanof does make the interesting and probably mostly true point that pragmatism has replaced ideology. National interest has carried the day, and that despite apparent differences in methodology, there is a certain continuity from autocracy to communism to democracy in the carrying out of Russian foreign affairs. Still, the reality of Russia's past and the continued lack of liberty in the new Russia are not sufficiently addressed. Russia is still a state in transition. Basic rights and liberties taken for granted in the west do not yet fully exist in the new Russia. Democracy is a messy business, and to be sure, we in the glass houses of the developed `west' are often times hardly in a position to toss stones. Nevertheless, it remains that if Russia is to take its place among the democracies as an equal, it must make that most frightening and yet necessary step from behind the curtain.

one of the worst textbooks I have ever had the misfortune of using

This negative review is, in no way, a reflection of the physical quality of the text. It was delivered on time and in the condition specified by the seller.

The content, however, is another story. I am nearing the completion of a master of science degree in electrical engineering and was required to purchase this book for a digital communications course. It is, in my opinion, one of the worst textbooks I have ever had the misfortune of using. The book is poorly written, in an abstract manner, with very little practical application to real-world problems. There are attempts to explain the material, but the details are skimmed through, leaving the reader with no other option other than to search for other sources. The chapters on probability are the worst in the book, and someone considering purchasing the text for this content should look elsewhere. By far, the most frustrating aspect of this book are the chapter problems. There is a galactic gap between the level of understanding expected at the end of each chapter and the level of difficulty of the problem sets. For some chapters, a problem set of ten problems has taken up to 16-20+ hours to complete. This was mostly spent on research outside of the pages of the book.

On a positive note, the MATLAB examples are decent. However, we did not utilize them in our coursework, so I don't have enough experience to form an educated opinion of their teaching effectiveness.

A Trusted Text Book

First time I used the text book written by Sir B. P. Lathi as an undergraduate student in 1982. The book was called Communication Systems for our course with the same name. That was an excellent book and gave good mathematical treatment, basically on Analog Communication System. After graduating as MSEE I have been using his two books for teaching communication systems. This Title "Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems as primary text and "Linear Systems and Signals" as supporting text for course on Communication Systems. Though other books from Haykin, Proakis, Couch, Stern, Zimmer, etc. have been useful to me as well, yet the simplified manner in which B. P. Lathi explains concepts supported by mathematical models is unique and liked by my students as well. It is worth noting that concepts of Information Theory are introduced at undergraduate level only in this text book as a separate chapter. This helps in understanding the connection between Communication Theory and Information Theory. This was available even in his first text book written in 1960s. With the inclusion of MATLAB examples it has become easy to understand and comprehend the performance of various modulation schemes.

However, keeping in view the increased importance of Wireless Communication, the topics related to multicarrier communication (OFDM), error control, channel models, and MIMO system, could have been expanded, perhaps as a separate chapter, like it is done by Prof Gallager in his new book " Introduction to Digital Communication".

Whole family loves it

Another great story told by "Hank", the narcissist "Head of Ranch Security". My 15 & 11 year old and I laugh out loud at these escapades. Great way to take a car trip or for listening to as they go to sleep at night. I wonder if these recordings have been updated as the sound effects and music seem to be a bit different from what I remember.

Great story and fantastic storytelling!

We love this series. Each book on CD is about 3 hours long and we love to listen to it on road trips! Humor, wit and interesting stories told by a fantastic storyteller! It's amazing how the author "does" all the character's voices! Would recommend it for kids and familes!

The third section takes on the clinical considerations in transfusion practice. The fourth section covers biosafety, and the fifth section covers methods -- including preparation of fresh whole blood and frozen plasma; crossmatch procedures; warming whole blood; and centrifuge calibration. There are two appendices: one for manufacturers of blood collection bags, and one for organizations with veterinary blood bank interests. However, one of the listings (Animal Blood Bank) gives the address as California when it is actually Missouri. Mr. Brooks put together a great book for those of us that have a hard time grasping financial concepts and processes. His information is put together so it's very easy to understand, very explanatory, each concept is clearly defined and explained so you don't come away wondering why you're more confused!. This is a great text and I highly recommend it for trouble understanding bookkeeping at your work to keeping a household budget, or to understanding the interest rates when you finance a car to buying a house. All the ratios you would commonly use and the financial jargon is now understandable!!!

One of the best financial textbooks on the market. This book makes financial concepts easy to understand because it's written in simple, everyday English. I like that the author gives examples to help illustrate financial terms. I like that the problems are shown in multiple formats (spreadsheet, financial calculator, by hand, etc.) which makes it easy to follow along once you pick how you're going to work it. 5 stars!

A graduate of the University of Michigan, received her undergraduate degree in journalism with major supporting work in chemistry and psychology. Her graduate work was in geology and she has taught in public and private schools and at the university level. She has done writing and editing for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Education Corporation and for various professional journals and organizations. With James Fitzsimmons she edited New Service Development: Creating Memorable Experiences published in 2000 by Sage Publications. Her nonprofessional activities have included volunteer work for the Red Cross aquatics program and in wildlife rehabilitation. She has particular interests in the areas of environmental issues and the responsibilities of patients and physicians in health care.

Received a B.S.E. in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of California at Los Angeles. His research in the area of emergency ambulance location won the Stan Hardy Award in 1983 for the best paper published in the field of operations management. A computer program, referred to as CALL, has been used by major cities worldwide to plan emergency ambulance systems. Consulting assignments include the RAND Corporation; the U.S. Air Force; the cities of Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Melbourne, and Auckland; the Texas comptroller; General Motors; La Quinta Motor Inns; Greyhound; TRICON Restaurants International; and McDonald’s. Teaching experience includes faculty appointments at the University of California at Los Angeles, California State University at Northridge, the University of New Mexico, Boston University Overseas Graduate Program, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Michigan and has held industrial engineering positions at Corning Glass Works and Hughes Aircraft Company. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an officer in charge of base construction projects.

This cookbook was written to help others make a ketogenic or very low carb diet a lifetime commitment. Moreover, my husband's blood pressure has gone from the verge of needing medication to being low normal. Still, the physician asks if we can sustain it long term. In fact, more than one medical professional has told me that this way of eating is “too difficult to follow” or “too restrictive”. One of the goals of this cookbook is to prove that notion wrong. This cookbook has the "everyday" recipes that my family and I have enjoyed on our very own journey to health. There are some low carb “treat”, but the majority of the recipes in this book are the simple recipes that have become part of our day to day lives. There are delicious, filling breakfasts that will keep your tummy happy when it’s tired of scrambled eggs and bacon and hearty sides that will never make you feel deprived. This is “diet” food that you will be proud to share at any potluck and your “carbivore” friends will expect you to share! I snuck in a few very low carb treats for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions because these are the foods with which we have also celebrated on our journey. An absolute MUST HAVE!

I received my book and had the opportunity to look through it last night. It's beautiful, Kristie did an amazing job! Her story at the beginning paints a picture so many of us know because our lives have followed a similar path. She has inspired so many of us and I know this book will serve to inspire many more to come. What a true labor of love. I absolutely love that her family is such a huge part of her book and her journey. My overall assessment of the book (and Kristie): AWESOME!! Kristie's sincere desire to help others is evident in the time and energy she expends to make each of us feel as if we're one of her closets friends...and there are over 26k of us who follow her! I've made several of Kristie's recipes from her you tube videos and have NEVER found one I didn't like...they are DELICIOUS! I'm so happy to have her recipes in writing now. This is one cookbook you don't want to be without. Buy it, you'll be so glad you did!!
