The common ring, torus and hypercube topologies of clusters are then explained and global communication procedures on these topologies are studied. This first part closes with the MapReduce (MR) model of computation well-suited to processing big data using the MPI framework.

In the second part, the book focuses on high-performance data analytics. Flat and hierarchical clustering algorithms are introduced for data exploration along with how to program these algorithms on computer clusters, followed by machine learning classification, and an introduction to graph analytics. This part closes with a concise introduction to data core-sets that let big data problems be amenable to tiny data problems.

Exercises are included at the end of each chapter in order for students to practice the concepts learned, and a final section contains an overall exam which allows them to evaluate how well they have assimilated the material covered in the book.

About the Author
Frank Nielsen is a Professor at École Polytechnique in France where he teaches graduate (vision/graphics) and undergraduate (Java/algorithms),and a senior researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories Inc. His research includes Computational information geometry for imaging and learning and he is the author of 3 textbooks and 3 edited books. He is also on the Editorial Board for the Springer Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision.

Thrilling

I have been waiting for this book to come out since I read the first three. I read it all within two hours because I couldn't put it down. Now again I will have to wait to see if there is a next installment which hopefully there will be. Love this series.

Very sophisticated writing for a young teen book-thank you Kathryrn Lasky! My daughter and I started reading this series when she was 13. She is 17 now and both of us are impressed by the way Mrs. Lasky has interwoven history, suspense, romance, drama, and folklore into an outstanding series! This last book is violent but overall the series has very little suggestive material - another plus in this area of young teen novels. Thank you, thank you, thank you - we need more reading material like this...

I enjoyed reading "The Crossing

I enjoyed reading "The Crossing." It ended in such a way that you can expect a fifth book. The continuation of the three mermaids stories in this book shows the struggles they have. Lucy, Hannah, and May have the struggle of choosing between land and sea. There are greater struggles as well, one of them being life threatening. In all it was a good book. I will look forward reading the next book.

About the Author
Hans Stephani gained his diploma, Ph.D. and Habilitation at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universit�t Jena. He became Professor of Theoretical Physics in 1992, before retiring in 2000. He has been lecturing in theoretical physics since 1964 and has published numerous papers and articles on relativity and optics. He is also the author of four books.

Dietrich Kramer is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universit�t Jena. He graduated from this university, where he also finished his Ph.D. (1966) and Habilitation (1970). His current research concerns classical relativity. The majority of his publications are devoted to exact solutions in general relativity.

Malcolm MacCallum is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary, University of London, where he is also Vice-Principal for Science and Engineering. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge and went on to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. there. His research covers general relativity and computer algebra, especially tensor manipulators and differential equations. He has published over 100 pages, review articles and books.

Cornelius Hoenselaers gained his Diploma at Technische Universit�t Karlsruhe, his D.Sc. at Hiroshima Daigaku and his Habilitation at Ludwig-Maximilian Universit�t M�nchen. He is Reader in Relativity Theory at Loughborough University. He has specialized in exact solutions in general relativity and other non-linear partial differential equations, and published a large number of papers, review articles and books.

Eduard Herlt is wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter at the Theoretisch Physikalisches Institut der Friedrich-Schiller-Universit�t Jena. Having studied physics as an undergraduate at Jena, he went on to complete his Ph.D. there as well as his Habilitation. He has had numerous publications including one previous book.

I'm a retired industrial physicist with my PhD in atomic theory.

I'm playing with a model, a toy, that relates the strange shapes of Schroedinger's atom to distortions in spacetime by charge rather than mass. I need to learn general relativity to look at it from the other point of view. My tensor analysis is a little rusty, but I find the presentation clear and effective. The book is huge, however, and a little like taking a drink out of a fire hose.

not much to it

Very bare bones recipe book, which I guess makes sense for the price. There are no photos or illustrations, just text recipes that probably could have been pulled from the internet. Some of them are a little vague on the crust and basically just tell you what filling to use, and some of the recipes seem very similar/redundant. All in all it's fine if you need some new ideas for quiche varieties, like you're on an all-quiche diet and you're getting bored with your usual standbys or something, but you can probably get the same information for free on the internet with minimal effort.

They say real men don't eat quiche but I am here to tell you I am a real man and I love it. If you think about it all quiche is is an omelette with more flavor and style then just a fried egg and because it's baked it's better for you too. The Happy Baker book is a collection of recipes of which most are unique to my rural upbringing, matched with my personal dating memories. The memoir vignettes are singularly my own but are at the same time very relatable. Sometimes it's nice to know you weren't the only one to make out with a longhaired rocker in the middle of a cornfield, with bangs the size of Oklahoma!

I am part country, part city…and all woman. After living for eighteen years in a village of nine hundred people, I thought it was time to tackle the Big Smoke aka Toronto, Canada's answer to N.Y.C.! I spent two years taking a cosmetics program there. Being a makeup artist for the last thirteen years has been quite successful for me. Most people might wonder what a professional makeup artist is doing writing a chick-lit cookbook. But, baking has come as naturally to me as makeup artistry has. When you've got passion, anything is possible. If they gave out degrees for sugar addictions, I would be on the honor roll.

My writing career started at the fall fair, in public school. I am the proud recipient of many first- and second-place ribbons for creative writing. If you saw the way they judge a pumpkin, you would know why. The idea for this book hit me like a ton of bricks. I couldn't have stopped writing if I'd tried. I would have written in my sleep if possible. I even got writer's arm (definition: a tan on one arm from writing outside all day).

I love to bake and I love to tell stories. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "Erin, you should write a book." Well, here it is. The recipes are easy to follow, with ingredients that are easy to find. Dating is hard enough, so I figure your emotional baking shouldn't be. Since the recipes are my personal favorites, they are tried, tested and true. Many are passed down from grandmas, aunts, great aunts, moms and the occasional kissing cousin. Others are my own twist on the original. Baking is an escape for me. I truly am happiest when I'm baking. I love sharing my baked goods and spreading the joy of baking around. Dating is not always an escape for me, but it sure is entertaining.

There were many times when I second-guessed myself while writing this book. A lot of time and energy went into it. On several occasions I thought, maybe I should focus this energy on furthering my makeup artistry career. I haven't even had a date in a couple of months because I have basically locked myself up in my condo after work to write. It didn't help watching The Shining one night and worrying afterward about getting cabin fever! I guess the worst I could do would be to hack up my plants.

But, whenever I had moments of doubt, a sign would occur that would make me continue on my writing journey. My first sign happened after about three straight weeks of writing. One morning, I stood in my kitchen and shouted, "Just give me a sign!" I needed to know that I should be investing so much time into this project. Later that afternoon, I was sitting at my desk writing when I heard a large rustling noise on my balcony. I looked over and there was a hawk. I said, "You must be my sign." He nodded and flew off, circling above for a few minutes. I quickly looked up the symbolism of hawks: integrity, focus, determination, strength, messenger of the Gods. Okay, sounded good to me! So, I continued, finishing my manuscript.

When the next major moment of self-doubt happened, I got another sign. I called my mother for support, and she told me that our former neighbor (from when I was five) had come by and dropped off a picture he'd found in his basement from the local newspaper. Thing was, this picture was twenty-three years old. It was from the public school fall fair. I was a pigtailed ten-year-old with my beloved (now departed) Gramps, looking at the creative writing exhibits. If that's not a sign, I don't know what is.

There were many times I felt vulnerable about putting myself out there with my stories. But then I thought, who am I kidding, because if we met you would know my whole life story in about five minutes. It's taken years of dating, many bottles of red wine and many hours of listening to Coldplay CDs to make this book possible. I've unlocked my vault of emotions. By reading it, I hope that no matter what dating stage you're at, you know you're not alone. And, you'll come away with a great sugary recipe to put a smile on your face after all the good, the bad and the fugly.

The Happy Baker is a Book Every Home Must Have

Many baking and cookbooks cross my desk at the library I work in.
I love to glance through them and put back on the shelf.
But The Happy Baker by Erin Bolger is a must buy!
I bought my own copy! And I never do that!
Last week,I was working at an event and I set Erin's book down for a minute. People wouldn't stop picking it up.
(so rude)
They were reading it, chuckling at her(Erin's) adventures and musings on life. They admired the beautifully done pictures,(exquisite photography)the easy to read, simple instructions for each yummy recipe!
Everyone wanted to "borrow" my book!!!
I'm not that stupid! I said "buy your own."
These BOLD people groaned with pleasure at the sight of the beautiful desserts-(the peanut butter cupcakes on page 17 are so moist and delicious-they taste like heaven).My sister-in-law, Dyanne bought Erin's book, loved it and bought copies for her two daughters. My daughter bought one. My son bought it for his coffeehouse. (he makes Erin's biscotti).
This book is so popular here at our library, we've had to get multiple copies. It is flying off the shelves at book Stores all over, too.

The Caramel Shortbread on page 144 is simply the best I've ever tasted.
The butter tarts on page 146 -melt in your mouth, buttery, just the right amount of sweetness and quite simply, a winner.
Erin's descriptions are fantastic.
In her tips at the front of the book, she tells you to do certain things e.g. roast your nuts first,get good quality ingredients, use parchment paper....... and.......... she reluctantly admits one will never make icing better than one's mother.
So forget that!
With Christmas right around the corner, I can guarantee, that anyone(and that includes men- as I said my son loves this book for his coffeehouse) would love this book for a Christmas gift.

Dating + Disapointment = Outstanding Collection of Baked Goods!

Interesting concept of combining the author's personal dating history (don't worry it's cleaned up so no naughty details. Ms. Bolger wanted a book that her mom could read without blushing.) and the extensive recipe list of the baked goods that got her thru the rough patches - i.e. "Almost Paradise Bread", "Three's a Crowd Rocky Road Bars", "My Mom Didn't like you Cupcake" and the ecstatic periods of romantic bliss, i.e. "Match Made in Heaven Dark Chocolate Cookies", "Getting Lucky Ain't Just for the Irish Cream Cupcakes" and even the general miasma of living single: "I Need a Man who has Bigger Balls than my Banana Bread".

The personal history is nothing too crazy and off the charts, in fact for most of us it will be all too painfully close to home. And the recipes, easy enough for a luddite in the kitchen to muster and rich enough to satisfy an itchy sweet tooth and take the sting out of NOT living the fairy tale.

Each recipe comes with a mouth-wateringly gorgeous photograph (the whole book is in a bright livid color that will pack on a few calories just by looking at it. My only gribe is that since this is a cookbook it should lie flat when open, The binding on this is way too tight and as pretty as the book is it hurts to have to break up the binding.

Not bad, I'll definatly be trying a few of these out, if for no other reason than to pack on some quality padding.

Solid basic baking

Amiable is the first word that comes to mind about this book, if that word can be used to describing baking. There aren't many original recipes in this book--just solid standards in most baker's recipe box already. On the other hand, solid standards got that way for a reason--they cheer us up when we're down, make us even more cheerful when we're up, and everyone loves them. None of the recipes are overly-complicated or require special ingredients, although I found the variations on chocolate chip cookies to be needlessly repetitive. The results turn out well, and I can't hate any cookbook that has a recipe for that Canadian classic, Nanaimo bars. If you're new to baking, or can only have a few cookbooks on your shelf, this is a good addition to your collection. There are a lot of stories about the author's relationships scattered throughout, but I honestly just ignored those (the publisher is Harlequin, as in the romance novels). Maybe someday when I need something fast and light to read, I'll read them. But in the meantime, I'll stick with the baking, which is satisfying enough.

Great even for advanced ELLs

I used this book and audio CD with some extremely advanced non-native speakers (Koreans who teach English as a foreign language in Korea) and they loved it. They found that they did not know 75% or more of the expressions in the book and they had a great time trying to incorporate the new language into their everyday conversations here in the U.S. Anyone who is a non-native speaker of English can benefit from this series.

This book really help me understand what is going on when I watch tv or something/ It is fun to learn those vivid slang expressions! I plan to buy all the slangman's serial 'cos I think

through that I can really understand the real English that cannot be taught in class. If you dont learn it on you own you will never get to learn the real English

Good, but not enough detail for some areas of law

This is a very good book, however I would caution exam candidates to not rely only on this book for the essay portion of the exam. Some areas of law are not covered in adequate detail. This is clear when you compare information in the book to past exams. As one example, the book barely touches on the 5th amendment, however there are past exams which required detailed analysis of 5th amendment issues. Overall I really like the book and it is a good SUPPLEMENT. In fact its brevity is part of what makes it appealing when you want to just get a broad overview. But again, I wouldn't recommend using only this book for essays.

This book is the reason I passed the CA bar

After paying over a thousand dollars for a commerical test prep course (Themis), I failed every single essay on the July 2013 CA bar exam. With just this book and the past exams available for free on the CA bar website, I passed the February 2014 exam.

I found that Themis' course wasted so much time "teaching" every minute detail of the law that it left me with little energy for the single most important test-prep strategy: TAKE AS MANY PRACTICE EXAMS AS POSSIBLE. PERIOD.

This book helps you with this most-important strategy for the following reasons:

(1) The rule outlines provide all the rules you need to know, written very concisely in the way the bar examiners want you to regurgitate them on the exam.

(2) The book includes 6 sample essay questions for each subject with answer outlines that identify the "must-get" issues, making self-grading your own essays a breeze.

(3) If you're having trouble with analysis, there are couple sample answers for each subject written by the actual author (i.e., not student samples) that you can learn from and practice imitating.

In short, this book is the reason I passed the bar exam.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

This is the best book for the studying the essay portion of the CA bar. I love it more than Bar Bri. Bar Bri books are dense and overwhelming. This book makes each topic approachable and easy to understand. It also has topic checklists for you to memorize so that when you walk into an exam you just write out those checklists and you won't miss an issue. I also love how each topic has at least 6 practice essays from past bar exams and explanations for each essay. It really helps to see how to write an essay on each topic. Plus there are issue matrixes that show you how often each topic has been tested. Everyone of my friends studying for the bar has gotten this book and loved it. I highly recommend this book, but note that this is only for the essay portion. This does not cover MBE nuances or the performance test. I passed the CA bar exam on my first try, even though my GPA was ranked at the bottom of my class.

About the Author

GEORGE NAKASHIMA, woodworker and architectural designer, is a native of Seattle, Washington. A graduate of MIT in architecture, he worked briefly in New York, then traveled to Paris, Tokyo, and India. It was while in Japan that he was sent on an extended architectural assignment to Pondicherry, India, where he designed Golconda, the primary disciples' residence at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which was his first major architectural project. Running a small integrated business near New Hope, Pennsylvania, since 1943, Mr. Nakashima's major commissions include furnishings for the country home of the late Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, Pocantico Hills, in Tarrytown, New, York, and interiors for Columbia University, Mt. Holyoke College, the International Paper Corporation, and the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu, New Mexico, for which he also provided the architectural design. Featured in such publications as Smithsonian, Town & Country, House Beautiful, Life, and Fine Woodworking, Mr. Nakashima has exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Renwick Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Nelson Gallery, Kansas City; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He was awarded the Gold Medal for craftsmanship by the American Institute of Architects in 1952, was named a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 1979, received the 1981 Hazlett Award, and in 1989 will be the first honoree in a series of major retrospective exhibitions of "America's Living National Treasures" at the American Craft Museum.

Gorgeous and inspiring book

Like the books of James Krenov, "The Soul of a Tree" is as much a book about philosophy as it is about wood. And it's a good philosophy: slow down, take your time, play with the wood, and enjoy it. The book is really about the soul of Nakashima. He outlines some of his own personal history and how he developed his ideas about craft. There's not really much on technique here - you can certainly find better books for that - but you won't find many more inspiring.

On a personal note I had a lady call me years ago to fix up `some old furniture' she and her husband had bought years ago (in the `50's I believe.) Seems when they were young college professors they found this young oriental guy down the road who made furniture in his garage. When I looked at the furniture I told her that her young oriental friend had become quite famous and showed her this book. She was flabbergasted. What she wanted me to do was to nail up some chairs that had worked loose over time. I refused, of course, and explained to her that these were valuable pieces that should be cared for properly. I also encouraged her to contact Nakashima's Conoid Studio (if it still existed) to let them catalogue the pieces. Even after years of use by a family with kids living in the sticks the pieces were obviously crafted with meticulous care and held up surprisingly well. It was a real joy to bring them back to daily use.

This man never wasted a single second of his life

George Nakashima was not only a master craftsman in his field, he was a genius. He could pick up any piece of wood and at a glance know what the end product would be to its full potential...and more.He would let the wood tell him. Even his simplest of projects 'sing' beauty and finesse. I bought the book for insperation to my own woodworking skills, and learnt much more than i expected. Included in the book is a short biography telling us of his early life, his travelings and how he ended up the man he became, his family, lifestyle, work and good natured beliefs. It certainly gave me insperation towards beautiful woodwork and i like to think I learnt a few lessons in life as well. If i was to me this man and only shake his hand I would feel honoured.......

A Life Lived With Wood

A genuine rock star of 20th century American Art Furniture, George Nakashima (1905-1990) is often identified with his large scale, live edge slab tables, often joined and reinforced with his signature butterfly key inserts, but his work and genius extend well beyond that form. In 1933, after earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Washington, a Master's degree in Architecture from M.I.T. and subsequently working for several years in New York, Nakashima bought a round-the-world tramp ship ticket and headed east. He variously traveled, lived, and worked in France, North Africa, China, Japan and India (where he made his first furniture pieces) and points in-between. He returned to America in 1940, and set up a furniture workshop in Seattle, Washington. Although born in the U.S., as a Japanese-American Nakashima and his family were interned during the Second World War at Camp Minidoka in Hunt, Idaho. There he mastered Japanese hand tools and joinery while serving as apprentice to a fellow internee who was a traditionally trained master Japanese carpenter. After his release the family settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where Nakashima lived and worked until his death. His home, studio and workshop were listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2008. His daughter, Mira Nakashima, continues to produce her father's as well as her own furniture designs in New Hope. [...]
This book serves both as Nakashima's autobiography and a personal exploration of his philosophy and artistic aesthetic. It is also a treasure trove of woodworking knowledge and insight. I have always found it quietly inspirational, on both the human and the artistic levels.
