About the Author
"Mark Dix" began working with AutoCAD in 1985 as a programmer for CAD Support Associates Inc. He helped design a system for creating estimates and bills of material directly from AutoCAD drawing databases for use in the automated conveyor industry. This system became the basis for systems still widely in use today. In 1986, he began collaborating with Paul Riley to create AutoCAD training materials, combining Riley's background in industrial design and training with Dix's background in writing, curriculum development, and programming. Dix and Riley have created tutorial teaching methods for every AutoCAD release since version 2.5. Mr. Dix has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Cornell University and a Masters in Education from the University of Massachusetts.

"Paul Riley" has been an instructor and designer specializing in graphics and design of multimedia. He is a founding partner of CAD Support Associates, a contract service and professional training organization for computer aided design. His 15 years of business experience and 20 years of teaching experience are supported by degrees in education and computer science. Paul has taught AutoCAD at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA. He has developed a program, Computer Aided Design for Professionals that is highly regarded and has been an ongoing success for the past 15 years.

Paul has taught AutoCAD at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and is presently teaching AutoCAD at Mt. Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. He has developed a program, Computer-aided Design for Professionals that is highly regarded by corporate clients and has been an ongoing success since 1982. Not clear enough.

Update: I'm lowering my review down from 3 stars to 1 star for the following reasons.
When I rely on this book to do my coursework, it ends up taking much longer than it should, along with a lot of guessing, because the majority(not just a lot, but most) of the drawings have very noticeable inaccuracies. On several of the drawing which require accurate dimensions to complete, the given information is not reliable. For example, just turning to a random drawing I've done in the past, Drawing 9-7, They are telling me a 2 foot hour tick will fit withing a 2 foot clock... and a 1 foot minute tick(very small in picture), is also a very small fraction. along with the Font of 2 feet, which clearly will not look good in a 2 foot clock. and an inch thick donut around the clock does not look like the picture.

Another example drawing 10-1, suggests using a 1 foot snap, yet most of the placements of things are on the inch scale. and says to set precision to 0'-0', which is unheard of.

I would recommend that people stay away from this book. It is very difficult to use, and now, I usually just ignore what they're telling me. As I sit here doing homework, I notice another inaccuracy, on drawing 11-2. The mp3 player is 6.18 units wide, with a 5.242 unit wide screen. The screen appears centered, but then it says it's edge is .5 units away from the edge of the player. Being centered, that means the mp3 player would be 5.242+.5+.5=6.242 which is greater than the actual width. If I place the screen as it describes, there is a noticeable Asymmetrical look to it, which is different than the text.

If I could, I would rate this product 0 stars. It appears there was absolutely no proof-reading by a careless publisher.

I'm currently on my second term of taking an autocad class at my community college, which unfortunately uses this book. I've done most of the drawings through where I currently am (chapter 9), and have found the authors do not do a very good job explaining the drawings. I've noticed several inconsistencies with their dimensions, and lack of dimensions which make some drawings a guessing game. Some techniques are required for drawings, but are explained only in later chapters. Changing dimension appearance, and the very many different commands to edit them are also not explained very well, and I find myself looking in online forums to figure out better techniques. I rate it three stars because it does do an adequate job at teaching me the very basics, but their drawings are asking too much; so much that it is more than they teach.

This was the required text for a college level class. The book was difficult to use, I have AutoCAD experience going back 20 years. I used it more for figuring out geometry for machining rather than creating drawings, but I have a decent working knowledge. At the end of each chapter, there are drawings that you have to redo. For some reason, the drawings are not turned to utilize the whole page, which makes the dimension and notes tiny and hard to see. I'm over 60, and was going to write it off to "old eyes", but many other people in the class complained about the same thing. I attached a picture of one drawing, why wouldn't you turn it 90 degrees and fill the page? Also, there was a test at the end of each chapter, so our instructor used the exact questions as a quiz each week. The quiz was online and open book, with 1 hour to answer 10 questions. There were quite a few questions that I looked back in the chapter and could not find the answer to. Again, this happened to a lot of people in the class, and some who got it right said they guessed. A couple of times, the instructor ended up giving everyone credit, because he couldn't find the answer either. By the way, I have a 3.83 GPA, so it's not due to my slacking off. And if you're writing a text about drafting, why would you not follow standard drafting conventions? Many of the sample drawings left items undimensioned, requiring the student to guess what to use, because there wasn't enough info to calculate the missing dimensions. To support that, I'm a 30 year machinist, and have had to deal with some real garbage prints over the years, so I know how to extract the info I need. I have 2 more AutoCAD classes upcoming, and the school has upgraded to Acad 2016, I hope I don't have to use a text from the same author.

There seem to be a few measuring mistakes, but the explanations and step by step instructions were very helpful. It would be helpful if the chapter test answers were listed in the back of the book. Also, I was viewing this on a samsung tablet and the illustrations were not clear.
