For One More Day, by Mitch Albom

From the author of The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie, a new novel that millions of fans have been waiting for.

"Every family is a ghost story . . ."

Mitch Albom mesmerized readers around the world with his number one New York Times bestsellers, The Five People You Meet in Heaven and Tuesdays with Morrie. Now he returns with a beautiful, haunting novel about the family we love and the chances we miss.

For One More Day is the story of a mother and a son, and a relationship that covers a lifetime and beyond. It explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one?

As a child, Charley "Chick" Benetto was told by his father, "You can be a mama's boy or a daddy's boy, but you can't be both." So he chooses his father, only to see the man disappear when Charley is on the verge of adolescence.

Decades later, Charley is a broken man. His life has been crumbled by alcohol and regret. He loses his job. He leaves his family. He hits bottom after discovering his only daughter has shut him out of her wedding. And he decides to take his own life.

He makes a midnight ride to his small hometown, with plans to do himself in. But upon failing even to do that, he staggers back to his old house, only to make an astonishing discovery. His mother--who died eight years earlier--is still living there, and welcomes him home as if nothing ever happened.

What follows is the one "ordinary" day so many of us yearn for, a chance to make good with a lost parent, to explain the family secrets, and to seek forgiveness. Somewhere between this life and the next, Charley learns the astonishing things he never knew about his mother and her sacrifices. And he tries, with her tender guidance, to put the crumbled pieces of his life back together.

Through Albom's inspiring characters and masterful storytelling, readers will newly appreciate those whom they love--and may have thought they'd lost--in their own lives. For One More Day is a book for anyone in a family, and will be cherished by Albom's millions of fans worldwide.

From Publishers Weekly
In Albom's, second novel, retired baseball player Charley "Chick" Benetto—facing the pain of unfulfilled ambitions, alcohol abuse, divorce, and estrangement from a grown daughter—returns to his abandoned childhood home and attempts suicide in a bungling fit of rage. He encounters the spirit of his deceased mother, Pauline "Posey" Benetto, who Chick thoughtlessly took for granted during both his formative years as cocky athlete and his booze-soaked adulthood. Miraculously, Chick can now apologize to Posey for his ingratitude concerning the sacrifices she made as a single, working mother. Albom narrates with finesse, particularly in Chick's wistful litany of his mother's pearls of wisdom, "A child embarrassed by his mother is just a child who hasn't lived long enough." If Posey's truisms may not necessarily break new literary ground, Albom deserves credit for giving her depth and complexity that transcend familiar pop culture notions of motherhood in '50s America. The gentle strumming of musical accompaniment befits Albom's brand of writing. This "ghost story" provides an affirming tale of moral instruction and emotional catharsis.

About the Author
Mitch Albom is an author, playwright, and screenwriter who has written seven books, including the international bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, the bestselling memoir of all time. His first novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, was an instant number-one New York Times bestseller that has since sold more than six million copies worldwide. Both books were made into acclaimed TV films. Mitch also works as a columnist and a broadcaster, and serves on numerous charitable boards. He lives with his wife, Janine, in Michigan.

From AudioFile
Charlie's been drunk so often and disappointed his daughter so many times that she doesn't invite him to her wedding. He even fails at his suicide. Or does he? When his deceased mother returns to love him unconditionally for one more day, he's not quite sure what's going on. The author reads his book with a deep, resonant voice that matches the sentimental sermonizing in the story. Albom's narration singsongs as Charlie reflects on his mother's past support, his own failings, and the events of a confusing present in which he relishes his mother's care and sees his own life clearly for the first time. Another Thought Provoking Tale - that grips and and Makes you Think.
By J. P. Ledbetter
Mitch Albom's "For One More Day" is a classic and age old tale retold throughout the boundless ages of eternity and history about people speaking with the dead, walking with the departed or visiting with loved ones when on the brink of death.

Just in a new setting with different characters and this story in one form or another has been put into movie form at least a dozen times over the last 50 years. The very first I remember watching as a youth was "The Ghost and Mr. Muir" the latest "The Edge of Darkness" with Mel Gibson and one of the great ones was "Ghost".

In them the characters usually rehash their triumphs and victories - but more often than not they relive their worthless or miserably troubled lives and the pain that has plagued them for most of it.

And as in that great movie "The 13th Warrior" the main character comes to realize the inevitable truth just - like the Arab did - that when in the face of his eminent demise he knelt and said this prayer:
"Merciful Father
1. For all the thing I should have thought - but did not think
2. For all the things I should have said - and did not say
3. For all the things I should have done - but did not do"
"I am truly sorry."

Charley seems to be living this admonition for his own life out "in spades" in this tale and it will result in him giving in to death or finding some reason for his life to go on. The premise is always the same "Self-Examination". Are there errors or inconsistencies or not quite congruent facts or assertions in this tale of woe and spiritual condemnation and ultimate healing and forgiveness; absolutely?

Does it answer every question...hardly? Does it however, give you pause to think and ask yourself questions about your life and the path you are on" - without any doubt - yes! Do you see yourself in some small way in all of these failings in Mitch Albom's books on a few of these important life altering or family issues from your youth to your present? Sure you do. If not you would not be human.

If you put all three of his books together and read them as a mere Trilogy Assignment on critical thinking and contemplation;
1) The Five People You Meet in Heaven
2) Tuesdays With Morrie, and
3) For One More Day
I believe you would have an experience that would change, alter, adjust, motivate or at the very least emotionally move you in your life in some way.

This current retelling of a most interesting tale of communing with the dead is in the reminiscent way of Edgar Allen Poe or some awesome gripping tale from William Shakespeare. It begins and holds you but catches you with just a little bit of sleight-of-hand or misdirection - because for about a third of the book you are left with a nagging question - in the back of your mind - "How the heck does the Water Tower play" in all this? Especially in the way it was presented. One has to read deeper beneath the surface (or between the lines) until you get about half way through the story. You are snapped into understanding by a mere phone call and then say Hmmm - I get it now. Then you can enjoy the rest of the tale.

All three of these books by Mr. Albom have similar themes. There was an issue in someone's life, I am not content, I am going to give up or kill myself or I am going to or I have already died and now I want answers, redemption, help, peace-of-mind or salvation for myself as I am drowning in miserable self-pity. Please help me with some simple type of release to explore the rest of my life or those heavenly worlds beyond without guilt.

In digesting Mr Albom's books I find them all wonderfully entertaining. They provoke thought within the reader - unless of course you are one of those terrible crazed leftist/progressive fanatics who hate anything and anyone who even remotely mentions God, Religion, Faith, Country or spirituality, the Divine etc - and Oh - let's not forget `guns'.

Which for the rest of us simply means - we believe in something greater than ourselves and mere mortal man that can give us sane concrete laws and rules and guidance. Some mighty giving entity to base true liberty and freedom upon that their twisted political over-lords cannot manipulate through partisan political edicts, corruption in the educational system or special interest propaganda and a corrupt and failed judicial system based solely on 'The Mob Mentality' and political influences, tied to the insanity of racial, financial and prejudiced political correctness covered by an entertainment industry that pushes hedonistic and deviant hypocrisy and immoral ideals upon our minds and our children characters.

All sprinkled with an "in the pocket (so-called news) industry" that does and says and supports or defends whatever the intellectually challenged minions of the Socialist Left tell them to do, or say or think or report and thus you have as a result the two star and one star rating justifications you see here.

In short normal people want to live and be in a world with rules, guidelines, standards-of-conduct based on truth and performance and the mystic of spirituality that actually knows and sees good and evil for what they really are meant to be and "WE" clearly choose self-discipline and hard work and sacrifice over "Free Stuff" - "Handouts" - and "Social Program" dependency like sheep or hatchery trout waiting to be fed pellets. Angelic creatures/possibilities that hold or demonstrate a higher power and such - scare and infuriate - those naysayers who are Godless on the left.

But for us normal people stuff like this is a treat. We neither take it as gospel nor as true reality - but neither do we dismiss the possibility that something of supernatural origin of this nature could and might happen in a person's life.

This story...by the way...no, I do not believe it completely...even if possible isn't founded in concrete facts. But, did this person experience something like this? Hey, the mind is a marvelous computerized biological machine of the most magnificent degree - in all of God's Creations; and it is the ultimate entertainment contraption; the heart can make you see beauty where none exist and the soul can make you actually believe what you are dreaming - is absolutely real.

I would like to someday get away from every tale of woe and misery and sacrifice and redemption being about mothers and women - although they deserve their - just do. But I would like to find an author who can put to pen the sacrifices of men and fathers who experience more - pain and suffering at the hands of flighty, free spirited, abusive and abandoning women - now than in the past - many of them experience the same trials and tribulations that Charley's mother is reported to have endured but just in reverse.

My father was one such individual - abandoned by my mother on a whim and "The Grass is Greener" thought process - which is is not! Many other men experience the same abuse (for men abuse with force - while women abuse with words and indifference and abandonment and character assassination) as the main character's mother in this book did. More and more so - however - as it becomes a "Woman's World" in this new Millennium. Men become just as victimized as women.

But I congratulate Mitch on a very nice touching story - real or not - is not important. It made me think - as do most of his other books - I relived a life where my mother did what Charley's father did. It made me ask how would I react in a similar situation as a father and who would these players on this stage of wonder - be in my life - and adventure?

That is all that matters for a good story to grab you and take you and your imagination away. I recommend all three books.

Loved it-as soon as I was done started all over and read it again.......
By D. Danner
I loved this book so much; having lost my oldest son this past June I was so touched and moved that as soon as I finished, I turned to page one and started all over again. Made me sad, yet inspired; all I want is just one more day with my boy. He passed away unexpectedly and tragically and I never got a chance to say goodbye or get that last hug and kiss and I love you Mom that I would get each time we visited. Our last 2 conversations were via the phone (2 days before he died) and via text (1 day before he slipped into a week long coma which he never came out of). I feel like I can't let him go because I need that proper goodbye...... This book left me feeling like maybe one day I'll get my wish.

Spiritually provoking.
By ashuran
This book like all of Mitch Albom's books engulfs you totally into a world of spiritual uplifting. You identifies with the characters and even the slightest piece of this transformation stays with you. Mr. Albom is a brilliant writer and his brief introductions into the spiritual world causes "men" to pause and in my case "woman". I am in a book club entitled "12 Women and a Book" and we have read all but one of Mr. Albom's books and with every discussion and ratings his books top our charts, everytime. I have recommended all of Mr. Albom's books to anyone I feel a spiritual connection, whether it's in line at the grocery store or with intimate friends and co-workers. I rated this book a five because I recommended this book and when I began reading it, I realized I had read the hard copy years ago before even joining my book club. Needless to say, Mr. Albom's literary input guides my spirit whether I want it to do so or not.

tale of love, identity
By Mary Stalker
Look Past is a touching, sometimes gory, tale of love, identity, and the heartbreaking weight of intolerance and hate. The anchor of the story is a girl who’s been murdered and the search to find the murderer. Weaved throughout the narrative is a transgender boy’s journey, obstructed by dogmatic ignorance and flagrant insensitivity, but buoyed by unwavering family support. Both a murder mystery and snap shot a trans teen in a small town, Look Past, is well worth the read.

Morality and the Movies: Reading Ethics Through Film, by Dan Shaw

Morality and the Movies presents the ideal introduction to philosophical ethics for film lovers. Dan Shaw uses a series of sixteen popular films, including Hotel Rwanda, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, A Clockwork Orange, Dead Man Walking and Full Metal Jacket, to illustrate all the major ethical theories and key contemporary moral issues. The book provides a brief summary and philosophical interpretation of each film, with reference throughout to primary philosophical sources. A unique pedagogical feature is that each chapter begins with a five-step summary of the theoretical position in question and a critical evaluation of its strengths and weaknesses through a specific film. Topics covered include:

- divine authority
- the social contract
- moral relativism
- virtue ethics
- freedom and determinism
- euthanasia
- capital punishment
- war and terrorism
- abortion
- business ethics

Ideal for undergraduate students coming to philosophical ethics for the first time, this book utilizes popular film to introduce a central topic in the study of philosophy.

Highly recommended.
By laura di summa-knoop
I have been using this book for a Media Ethics course last semester. Shaw effortlessly combines an in depth analysis of the films considered with an exhaustive explanation of ethical theories. More than just using film as a “stretched” thought experiment, the book is an example of how film can actually do philosophy. An inspirational book for both students and scholars. Highly recommended.

By P. Quadrio
Quite basic and a little mechanical in places, also works with a rather dry and uninspiring conception of ethics... here are the normative theories, and how they apply to film, here are some practical ethical dilemmas and how they found in films. There is room for a richer approach. A bit too mechanical to sustain me.

Clarifying Media from a great story teller
By Randy A Hlavac
As an educator, it is challenging to take complex concepts and make them come alive to the reader. Judy Franks has this talent. In her book, she is able to tell us - the reader - about the past and future of media and its impact on our lives and the organizations we use in our business and personal lives. It is a fun read where you learn something important in every chapter. I highly recommend this book to better understand media and its impact n our lives. The media change is here...now we must embrace and use it in our business and personal lives.

Accessible. Insightful. Clarifying.
By Ariel Goldfarb
Full disclosure: I am a big fan Judy's book and work, so I am a _bit_ biased. While I think the "Accessible. Insightful. Clarifying." I put in the subject is a good summary of what she tees up in this book, ultimately, the big takeaway/benefit from this book: reassuring.
In the brand/marketing world in which I work, there is a cacophony of voices screaming how everything is broken. I don't think it's necessarily broken, but there certainly are a lot of questions out there. I think that the ideas in Judy's book provide a high level view that helps put everything in context, in a very holistic way, yet these same ideas are well grounded in logic, history and common sense. I found it to be quite valuable. So much so that it became required reading on the course syllabus for the brand-related class I teach.

Making Sense of Change
By Ken Coogan
There have been more changes in the media landscape over the past 10 years than in the previous 100. No wonder that confusion reigns among marketers! Judy's book provides a framework for thinking about media and taking advantage of new opportunities while reminding us of certain truth's that haven't changed (Content is King). A great read for marketers of all types.
