Highly recommended.

I have been using this book for a Media Ethics course last semester. Shaw effortlessly combines an in depth analysis of the films considered with an exhaustive explanation of ethical theories. More than just using film as a “stretched” thought experiment, the book is an example of how film can actually do philosophy. An inspirational book for both students and scholars. Highly recommended.

I had Dr. Shaw for class and so of course we used his book. I did not like the way that the class or the book were set up. The material was very confusing and didn't make sense.

Quite basic and a little mechanical in places, also works with a rather dry and uninspiring conception of ethics... here are the normative theories, and how they apply to film, here are some practical ethical dilemmas and how they found in films. There is room for a richer approach. A bit too mechanical to sustain me.
