~ Great Book! Many interesting & practically applicable games, concepts, theorems, & formulas. Just needs a Robotics Laws update, it only shows 3, when now there are now more laws, look it up in Wikipedia: Laws of Robotics. Be aware the latest publication copyright of this book is 1985 & has only been updated slightly as it mentions in description.

Great casual read for the mathematician

Writing from a graduate student in pure mathematics point of view. Moreover, I am most interested in analysis with quite a bit interest in computability theory, logic, and finite state machine type stuff.

This book is a pretty casual read and is probably not for anyone wanting to ready themselves for AI research (as others have said). However, it is a really interested casual read that (thankfully) does get pretty mathematical. I find the exposition on the heavier math sides to be quite interesting. And, even though the book is definitely outdated, I would assume a lot of the theoretical ideas about AI still hold true for today. Regardless of whether or not uses statistics for AI now, there are a lot of really good ideas in this book I would assume are still important.

In short, I would probably recommend this book to anyone interested in ideas rather than applications in terms of AI. If you are a master at computability type stuff, this book's math exposition might be a little light, but the historical aspects and point of views written in this book probably make it worth it.

With each reading, there is something that I had not noticed before, which makes this a classic introduction.

A great introduction to Turing Machines and basics to other computational theories. Other books, speaking about Turing Machines, are either delves nothing about the technical details or is too mathematical at the start, which makes for bad substitutes for Turing's original writings. Granted there are not much on the German Enigma machines and their encoding and deciphering of messages. This being said about what may enhance the field of artificial intelligence since intelligence may be highly employed in the code breaking of Enigma, it is part of lost history and I doubt that anyone has any files on this aspect to describe something with some originality such as Alan Turing. Nevertheless, this book is both excellently approachable even if one has basic Biology or how computers' working parts represent non-human intelligence can be simulated.
I was able to understand most the material in the first couple of chapters upon first reading, but upon second reading, I was able to find this book very interesting because there were material that I thought that I knew upon first reading, the second time around reveals to me that I don't know them that well to have depth in learning from this highly deserved classic.

Mayer did paw her teenage breasts, exacerbate her insecurity by calling her "my little hunchback," feed her uppers and downers ("bolts and jolts"), and repel the U.S. drug czar's personal attempt to get her into rehab. But the true villain was Judy's diabolical stage mom, Ethel Gumm, who fed her pills at age 9. Judy's heart belonged to her daddy, a kindly theater owner cursed with pederastic yearnings that evidently got the family run out of various towns, once by a man named Doc Savage. Daddy died young, and Judy kept hooking up with older men, including two probably gay husbands, one of whom cheated on her with her daughter Liza's husband. Her first best girlfriend in Hollywood (and probable lover) turned out to be a studio spy. She knew at least one of her agents, nicknamed Loeb and Leopold, robbed her blind, but since betrayal was everybody's way of life, she just laughed it off--and died dead broke. Judy cheated on Liza's dad (and her own great director) Vincente Minnelli, with still-handsome Orson Welles, who was cheating on Rita Hayworth. "People like me don't grow up easily," Judy once said. Most people in this book deserved to go up in flames, but only nice Margaret Hamilton, playing the Wicked Witch of the West, actually did so in a filming accident. She recovered; Judy didn't. It's fascinating to read about Judy's self-immolating life. But for a jolt of joy afterward, I prescribe the CD Judy at Carnegie Hall. Judy Garland's on-screen longing for a land where "sorrows melt like lemon drops away above the chimney tops" was answered with a life plagued by emotional agony, dependency on drugs and alcohol, exploitative relationships, suicide attempts and physical violence. This exhaustively researched and illuminating biography by Clarke, whose bestselling 1988 life of Truman Capote won critical praise, is as compassionate as it is wrenching. It follows the basic themes established by the best of the more than 20 biographies and memoirs of Garland that have appeared since her 1969 death (in particular, Gerald Frank's 1975 bio, authorized by her family). But while most portray Garland as tormented by inexorable and sometimes inexplicable inner demons, Clarke brings to his work a far harsher evaluation of how the singer was treated by her employers, family and lovers: her mother gave her amphetamines at the age of four; producers at MGM sexually harassed her as a young teen; husband Vincente Minnelli cheated on her with men soon after their marriage; husband Sid Luft stole millions from her; fourth husband Mark Herron had an affair with Garland's son-in-law, Peter Allen (then married to Liza Minnelli). Many of Clarke's revelations are of a sexual nature--he mentions affairs with Sinatra, Glenn Ford, Yul Brynner and Tyrone Power as well as with women. Other revelations, such as of Garland attacking her young son, Joey, with a butcher's knife, are simply shocking. Yet Clarke never exploits this volatile material as cheap gossip; instead, he deftly weaves it into a detailed, respectful and haunting portrait. (Apr.)

Yet another biography of Judy Garland? Yes, but this one by Clarke, author of the acclaimed Capote, could possibly stand as the definitive work on the troubled actress/singer. It was ten years in the making and was extensively researched; Clarke even had access to Garland's unpublished autobiography. Garland, n?e Frances "Babe" Gumm, was born into a show business family, which boded well for her own career. However, according to Clarke, her father was a closet homosexual who liked young boys, her mother took lovers, and neither spent much time together. This perhaps was a harbinger of the personal difficulties Garland would encounter. Clarke's meticulous research offers some revelations. He asserts that Garland's mother, not the much-maligned MGM studio executives, started Garland on the pill roller coaster that would be her downfall. This is a necessary purchase, even for libraries already holding books on Garland, as there is sure to be demand; Clarke has a big publicity tour planned. Highly recommended for all libraries.

Fast Read - Shockingly Sad

When I reads a biography, it I find that it is sometimes smart to research some sources on my own, especially in one such as this, wherein most sources/past friends do not hold the subject, Judy, in high-esteem. However, I do find that unfortunately, it appears that Judy was her own worst enemy, probably NEVER thinking her once bright future would lead to such an early demise through her pill usage and what seems a constant desire to harm herself, (sometimes for attention and some times due to her internal hatred of herself). As I read, I began thinking and feeling as so MANY of her friends and men in her life, that "if only this," or "only that," could be done or fixed, she would get better. This is a riveting look into her life, and you may find yourself asking the same question: "Could anything or anyone have helped her?" Poignant and sad...truly sad.

Really well written. Worth your time!

This is actually a pretty good read. Not just because I’m currently in a trashy memoir/biography phase, but because Judy lived a hell of a life and is THE original train wreck. Amy Winehouse? Whitney Houston? Lilo? Whatever. Judy was the real deal. And if it’s sordid details you want out of a biography, then this will not disappoint.

The narrative reads like your guiltiest pleasure trashy fiction. It’s no wonder that Jacqueline Susann modeled her character Neely O’Hara after Judy (yes, I’ve read Valley of the Dolls. Shut up). There is a wonderful character arc as well; it follows the pattern that many would expect out of the life of an addict.

You begin reading feeling terribly sorry for Judy. Her closeted gay father gets them booted out of at least three homes for chasing teenage boys. From a young age, her mother feeds her pills both for energy and then to get to sleep. Diet pills soon followed. She was under an enormous amount of stress to look a certain way, and told by many she was fat and homely. One can’t blame her for ending up the drug-addicted emotional cripple she turned out to be.

As the story goes on, however, the pity party begins to wane and the narrative gains some balance. The full picture of her life makes clear all of the opportunities and squandered chances at redemption she was given. Ultimately, it seems the blame for her early demise lies with Judy herself. It is still heartbreaking, though, the way it is when anyone of enormous talent wastes it and dies young.

Judy's bio, warts and all.

Learned about Judy Garland's life. At times the writing felt a bit overly dramatic but that was also true of Judy. It delves into some extremely harsh circumstances she went through. This isn't a book for young people.

This is just a biography though. It's not about Judy Garland as the iconic performer and her place in American and gay culture. I'm not knocking it for being what it's not. It's just information you might like to know to set the proper expectations for your read. I do recommend the book.

About the Author
Mark L. Savickas, PhD, is chair emeritus and professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He also serves as an adjunct professor of counselor education at Kent State University, where he has taught career counseling to more than 5,000 students since 1973. He serves as president of the Counseling Psychology Division of the International Association of Applied Psychology (2010-2014).

For his work in career counseling, he has received the John L. Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Personality and Career Research from the Counseling Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association (1994), the Eminent Career Award from the National Career Development Association (1996), the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society for Vocational Psychology (2006), and honorary doctorates from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) and the University of Pretoria (South Africa).

This empowering and thought provoking book shows readers how to examine ones past experiences and understanding to create a future that is more aligned with one's true self. Though the authors main focus is career development through understanding ones self, this book certainly applies to life in general. If you are creative type of person this book can be of great help in propelling your creativity forward with regard to your career and life.

Thus HumAnimal details the differences and intersections between Derrida and Agamben in their respective approaches to power, claiming that to think simultaneously within the registers of deconstruction (which conceives of power as a symptom of the metaphysics of presence) and biopolitics (which conceives of power as the operation of difference) entails a specification of the political and ethical consequences that attends the two perspectives.

When considered as the potential of language to refuse the law of signification and semantics, silence can neutralize the exercise of power through language, and Seshadri’s inquiry discloses a counterpower that does not so much oppose or destroy the politics of the subject but rather neutralizes it and renders it ineffective.

A fantastic read

Driven by fierce ethical concerns, author Kalpana Seshadri challenges the reader to understand the deprivation of speech as a political realm of dehumanization. Seshadri beckons us on from Agamben's appropriation of Aristotle to high wire artist Philippe Petit's ability to understand the sounds of birds, in order to confront us with the question of our living being. This sophisticated contribution to the philosophy of race and racism is a model of scholarly writing, and amazingly funny! Seshadri's writing style is singular. It is lyric and spry; the chapters on the Wild Child are alone worth the price of admission. HumAnimal is a brilliant book. I have never read one quite like it.

Yes, I agree with the prior reviewer: this is a fabulous book about race. I'm still thinking through whether I'm going to take the entire journey with Seshadri, whether I'll go all of the way with her. But make no mistake, this is a book to be reckoned with for its thinking at the intersection of modernity's racial imaginary, the implication of language in that imaginary, and the possibilities of silence—and Seshadri means something quite specific by this—as a mode of insovereign or fugitive escape. And again, I concur with the previous reviewer that the stuff on the wild child, which is all bound up with what I'm here terming fugitivity, is amazing and alone worth the book. I read this book as a subtle critique of modern sovereignty and the formation of the sovereign as bound up with the law (of race and language).

About the Author

Johnny Salda�a is Professor Emeritus of Theatre from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts’ School of Film, Dance, and Theatre at Arizona State University. He has been involved in the field of theatre as a teacher educator, director, playwright, and qualitative researcher.�Salda�a’s research methods have been used and cited internationally for studies in K-12 and higher education, the fine arts, business, technology, social sciences, government, social services, communication, human development, sport, health care, and medicine. This is a very general book about how you can think to be a better researcher so that you can do qualitative studies. I highly recommend this to others. I give it 4 stars because some information in it was too general for me. Then again it is not meant to be a specific road-map.

Stay away - there's so much better out there.

This book's approach to qualitative research is mediocre at best. What is far more concerning than Saldana's methodological recommendations, however, is his presentation. Allow me to elaborate.

First of all, Saldana frames qualitative research in an overly cognitivist manner. He constantly resorts to the language of "mental patterns," and "ways your mind works," placing a strong emphasis on the idea that learning qualitative research methods requires you to remake your mental works. Even as he cites numerous incidental sources from neuroscience--few if any of which are germane to the points he is making about qualitative research itself--his choice of words and his glib tone take the book in the direction of the pseudo-science of "life-hacking" more than scholarship. One does not need to know "how your brain works" in order to talk, in order to analyze the world around us, and so on; so the priority given to pop-neuroscience language seems to be a distraction at best, and at worst a smokescreen for thinly-developed material.

That should be enough to steer you away to another introduction to qualitative inquiry. However, there are a number of other incidental issues which also trouble the book. First, in chapter 1 Saldana presents a highly simplified, deterministic view of how a person's social position influences (or, as he seems to suggest, equates to) their worldview. I am fully aware that there is a relationship between one's positionality and one's voice--this was the substance of one of the first major interventions by feminist scholars, such that the idea is often presumed commonsense in the academy today. Unfortunately, the feminist critique of the so-called "master subject" (Haraway's term) is not so well-known that scholars today can simply dash off a terrible representation of it *in a textbook for new academics,* who may not be exposed to any more rigorous formulation in subsequent coursework. Furthermore, Saldana implies that by openly acknowledging one's positionality one can earn the trust of readers, by showing that the researcher has thought through "all" the ethical considerations regarding representation of others. This makes me want to cry. It is ludicrous to suggest that we can fully and transparently know how our own person affects the way that we write our scholarship. It is equally ludicrous to suggest that by disclosing our positionality our readers will be able to perfectly calibrate and see through our distorted lens to some objective Truth; or that we even *deserve* a reader's trust just because we talk about growing up privileged or homeless or white or brown or whatever. The issue at hand is not how to recover scholarship's lost sense of transparency--but rather to see that all knowledge of the world is tied to subjects who themselves are in the world. I could go on, but it's not necessary--suffice to say, Saldana presents a crude approximation of the feminist critique of knowledge production, a critique which he owes a great debt to, given how subsequent changes in the academy have valorized qualitative research against a hard-lined quantitative approach to social science.

The overall tone of the book is fairly casual, even conversational--which in and of itself is not problematic, except that Saldana often lapses into an editorial voice. For example, in chapter 7, he presents *without any citations* a thin summary of "embodied" research and research methodologies that prioritize the body. These he dismisses out of hand (as more an "obsession" or a "fixation" than a "lens," one of his favorite terms), without presenting any evidence that he has engaged with this scholarship at any depth. Since when is the act of writing a textbook the moment to pronounce one's opinions on other scholars, not least on entire subfields of work?

Ah, but wait, there's more. Since when is the writing of a textbook an opportunity to air one's misogynistic tendencies? Later in the same chapter, he suggests that one way of "thinking cinematically" is to reflect on what cinematic character you might most identify with. He then cites Hannibal of "Silence of the Lambs"--yes, seriously--and then claims that, for him, Hannibal's most salient personal characteristic is his "high-powered perception," his cool analytical approach, rather than *the fact that he was a serial killer of women.* Where is his editor to tell him that this is inappropriate? Where are his friends who read the manuscript? I can name fifty different leading actor roles from major motion pictures who have high-powered perception who *are not serial killers of women.* This is deeply inappropriate and perhaps unfortunately revealing.

I could go on, but I hope at this point I don't need to. PLEASE find a different book to learn qualitative methods from.

About the Author
Deborah Flanagan established the Center for True Health in NYC in 2008 and has since guided thousands of people through major life changes, helping them find true health and balance using Reiki, hypnosis, and reflexology. Her unique approach has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show and in O, the Oprah Magazine; she also teaches Reiki and sees patients at NYU Langone Medical Center, and previously at Beth Israel Medical Center. She is a certified hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotists, and is a certified reflexologist through the American Reflexology Certification Board and a member of the Reflexology Association of America and the New York State Reflexology Association. Deborah completed a 600-hour Reiki training through the New York Open Center, and is a registered practitioner and teacher of the Shibumi International Reiki Association, which reflects her emphasis on the traditional Japanese roots of the system of Reiki. She continues to study with Frans Stiene at the International House of Reiki, and practices Reiki meditation and self-care daily. Prior to embarking on her wellness career, Deborah garnered more than fifteen years of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector as the director of development for distinguished arts organizations including the Paul Taylor Dance Company, the American Symphony Orchestra League, and the Academy of American Poets. An award-winning poet and the author of Or, Gone (Tupelo Press, 2015), Deborah’s work has been published in AGNI, The Gettysburg Review, Ploughshares, FIELD, and The Southern Review. She is also a former professional ballet dancer, having toured with Southern Ballet Theatre and taught ballet to at-risk children. Her poetry and dance background enables her to bring to her wellness practice an intimate knowledge of the language and silence of the body, and she thinks of her current work as a union of matter and spirit. Highly Recommended

Like author Deborah Flanagan herself, this book is down-to-earth, practical, and clear while still being compassionate, heart-centered, and light. Deborah tells it like it is without preaching a one-size-fits-all approach. She offers a series of questions for practitioners to ask themselves about various aspects of the business side of wellness work while emphasizing the natural evolution of any solo practice.

New and growing practitioners will find specific suggestions and insights on how to start or develop their solopreneur wellness businesses from the author and various other practitioners who have successfully built and nurtured their own businesses without ever losing their passion or soulful approach to their work. Potential or beginning professional practitioners have plenty of room to keep dreaming while honestly exploring just what it takes to make their dreams of helping others a reality.

In this book, "business" isn't a dirty word; it is both love- and brain-connected. This outlook is sorely needed in the wellness world.

I look forward to recommending this book to my own professionally minded students. I picked up a few ideas and inspirations for myself as I read, as well.

Building a Powerful Practice is a thorough and comprehensive guide to creating and building your own wellness practice. Deborah shares practical and do-able marketing and business-building information, and breaks it into manageable chunks. The stories she shares from her experiences as well as the experiences of other wellness practitioners mentioned in the book add to and clarify the reality of building this type of business. The questions she offers at the end of each chapter help you to define and clarify your own path and help you see there isn’t a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach to creating your business. This book is a wonderful resource if you are just starting your own wellness business, as well as if you are in need of a little extra support and inspiration as you grow your business. Deborah’s warmth and knowledge come through in each chapter, and her experience helps demystify the process of where and how to begin.
