Start Where You Are At

We just got done looking at Goldie Hawn’s “10 Mindful Minutes: A Journal” and here I am back, BAM, with “Start Where You Are: A Journal for Self-Exploration” by Meera Lee Patel. Trust me, these two journals are totally different from one another, so you’re going to want to keep reading.

Patel’s journal comes from a unique, but familiar perspective. How often have you put change on hold because things weren’t where you thought they should be for you to make that change? I’ve done. Patel, the author, has done. Odds are good that you’ve done, or maybe you’re doing it now. “Start Where You Are” encourages you to stop looking, and waiting, for that other day, and to instead start where you are. Her journal asks probing, thought provoking questions to help you find out more about yourself: what you really love, your motivations, how see yourself and how you feel others perceive you, and more. However she does mix it up. Sometimes the journal will just ask a question for you to answer, but other times you’re drawing pictures, or filling in circles or other shapes, or coloring in a drawing.

Along with her journaling exercises, Patel includes inspiring quotes from a variety of sources. Since she’s an accomplished artist, with lines of stationary sold in boutiques, the quotes are presented in colorful, whimsical fonts, suitable for framing (if you’re willing to cut them out of the book).

It can be difficult to think about yourself and your desires, particularly if you think they’re unattainable. Artist and author Meera Lee Patel does her best to make the journey a painless and playful one.

I loved journals like this one

I ordered 2 of these journals for both of my nieces, ages 17 and 14. When I was growing up, I loved journals like this one. I think it's important that teenagers explore their hopes and dreams and innermost thoughts, and it's even better if they put it on paper. Now that I'm 30, I have so many journals like this one to look back on. I cringe at some of the comments I wrote in those things, but I also smile and become teary-eyed at others. It's fascinating to look back at some of my dreams and to realize I've accomplished them and to marvel at the unique path my life has taken. I wanted to give both of my nieces a similar experience. I didn't want to buy them something that they'll use for a year or so and toss out when something new and more exciting comes along. I thought that this would make a perfect gift because it's something that hopefully they keep for years and can reflect back on as adults. I've included a note in each journal that says something to that extent and lets them know how proud I am of both of them and that I love them.

Now on to the book itself - first off, the artwork is gorgeous. Some of the drawings (they're more like paintings) are absolutely frame-worthy. They appeal to both adult women and teens because they're somewhat whimsical while still giving off a modern feel. The colors are so vivid and bright, they almost jump out at you. The quotes are all very thought-provoking. And the prompt questions really got me thinking myself... so often in life, we forget to explore ourselves, to ask ourselves important questions. We get caught in the rat race, in our everyday hectic schedules and we lose ourselves. Even though I bought this journal for my teenage nieces, it's certainly something that I'd consider purchasing for myself as well. It really does appeal to women of all ages.

It would also make a great meditation companion. As a writer, I find writing to be very meditative. It really assists me in my daily breathing exercises and meditation sessions. It helps me to clear my head, to focus on nothing but myself for a few minutes. I usually use a blank notebook, but this journal would be even more helpful.

Buy this for all the women in your life who need a little bit of inspiration or encouragement, and then treat yourself to one as well!

About the Author

With over 15 years as a professional mountain biker, the name Brian Lopes is synonymous with American Mountain Bike racing. Since his professional debut back in 1993, Brian has been a constant presence on race podiums worldwide. With over 25 World Cup wins, four World Championship titles, and nine National Champion titles in both DH and Dual Slalom, Brian holds the most World Cup “wins” out of any male racer to date, and is recognized as the winningest American pro mountain biker.

In 2008 his winning-ways were recognized, as Brian was inducted into both the Mountain Bike and BMX Hall of Fame.

Having raced BMX for most of his childhood, Brian learned how to ride a bike at the tender age of 4, turning Pro at the age of 17 and competing in the BMX circuit for 7 years before channeling all his efforts to mountain biking. He has appeared on EuroSport, Universal Sports, CBS Sports, Outdoor Life Network and has graced the covers of every major national and international mountain biking magazine, including Mountain Bike Action, MBUK, Dirt, Bicycling, VeloNews, and Mountain Biking, and has received coverage in such mainstream media as Men’s Health, Rolling Stone, and USA Today.

Is it too late in life???

I'm going on 53 and got my first mountain bike 1 year ago. After a rude introduction to single track, I decided to try and learn some skills. This book looked like a good source of info, so I ordered it. My first impression was that I'll never risk most of the moves shown by the pros in the book. It's definitely geared toward all-out riding. But I went back to the book and got more selective with the chapters. I then realized that all the basics are there. Not only are the techniques shown, but there's great explanations of why they work. It's almost like having a video. So what first looked like an intimidating how-to manual, now seems more like Pandorra's Box. I look forward to practicing whenever I can spare the time, then getting out and enjoying some terrain. The deer trails above my home have taken on new meaning.

Masterful Indeed!

Bicycle training includes physical, psychological, and skills training. Although riders often ignore the latter, without skills training mountain bikers limit their potential enjoyment and development as competent cyclists.

This is one of the best books ever published on acquiring mountain biking skills, a book whose principles broadly apply to other forms of bicycling, including road cycling.

The book is well-organized and the topics flow well. The book begins with general bike set-up and pedaling, transitions to braking, cornering, hopping, dropping, and jumping, and puts the basics together in chapters about flowing, crazy (miscellaneous) conditions, and racing.

The book has more than 100 color photos and diagrams, which overall illustrate its points well. Diagrams, such as those on pages 64, 66, and 67 depicting zero, negative, and positive camber help the reader learn the meaning of familiar yet uncertain terms. Time-sequence photography, such as images on pages 106 and 107 illustrating the difference in jumping techniques of a dirt-jumper and cross-country racer are superb.

The book attempts to detail principles for beginners and experts alike, and overall does a great job.

As excellent as the book is, it could be improved.

A glossary would help. Authors and editors often forget that not everyone knows the meaning of the jargon words-such as rail and carve. Even if explained at first usage, a glossary of mountain biking terms would improve the book.

The language is hip, sometimes crude. Although attractive to many who practice downhill mountain biking, the lingo might not appeal to all. For example, in describing pedaling style at the bottom of the pedal stroke on page 34, the authors write: "Pretend you're scraping dog crap off the bottom of your shoe."

The book includes descriptions and illustrations that are inconsistent. For example, in describing a series of turns on page 59, the text describes a left then right series of turns, but the illustration is right then left. In describing how to carve flat turns, on page 66, the text says lean your bike more than your body, but the rider is leaning his body more than the bike. On page 69, in describing skidding into loose corners, the text describes the method of dealing with a skid turning left, but the time-sequence photos are of a rider turning right. Such inconstancies make it more difficult for the reader to follow the authors' points.

Sage advice has its exceptions. When exceptions are not qualified as such, readers may be confused. For example, throughout the book, the problems associated with needless, overzealous, panicked, or overly cautious braking are reiterated. The novice mountain biker may think: "Always stay off the brakes!" Yet in describing how to conquer switch backs, page 68, the first item of advice is "Slow WAY down....you want to reach a happy speed, not scare yourself..." which, of course, is what novice riders think in every situation they consider braking. If the authors had said: "This is an exception to letting-the-brakes-go-to-ride-more-effectively rule," they'd clarify their thinking for the reader and gain credibility.

These minor quibbles aside, this book has great information about mountain biking skills, from one of the most skilled riders who has every lived. If you are a mountain biker, get this book-even if only to look at the pictures.

Conscious Competence

Learning anything proceeds along a continuum. Starting from where one isn't even aware how much one doesn't know, (unconscious incompetence), the first step is to become aware of just how much one doesn't know. This would be the stage of conscious incompetence. As one gains knowlege and practices a set of skills, they are in the phase of conscious competence. Elite atheletes, like Brian Lopes in mountain biking, have reached the stage of unconscious competence. They no longer even have to think about it, they "just do it." Lopes started riding at 4 years old, and turned pro at 17. Rising from the ranks of BMX, Brian has been successful in a vast range of off road biking activities. Not only has he been successful at many of the biking disciplines, he holds world records in bunny hopping and distance jumping, and he is even the star of a mountain bike video game "Downhill Domination" for PlayStation.

Sex with dolphins, inflatables and techno mind melds....oh, my!

Can you imagine? Hopefully not. No worries--Alissa Nutting has you covered. It’s a novel called Made for Love, a sardonic, sometimes hilarious and occasionally provocative look at America. Apparently, we’re not so much hurtling toward dystopia as drowning in self-absorption, disfunction, and a condition best described as techno-detached syndrome.

Pity the schlub married to a mogul named Gogol. That would be Hazel, on the lam from husband Byron, a Steve Jobs-like inimical figure determined to achieve global domination in a ‘Pinky and The Brain’ sort of way. The final straw to send Hazel scurrying is Byron’s suggestion they install brain implant chips linking their thoughts and interior lives. Byron doesn’t like to be disappointed and Hazel can’t afford to let him know what she really thinks. He’d kill her. Literally.

Then there's Jasper--gigolo and con man who bears an uncanny resemblance to a sexy, European Jesus. Apparently, Christ would have been a babe magnet in Boca, until he gets an urge to be more than just Flipper's friend;)) The remainder of Made For Love is a seriously silly look at our current cultural condition, dependence on technology, and a willingness to use people as though they were commodities. For the Jaspers and Byrons it's a rush and it becomes addictive. Sharp insight is tempered with great humor-- Byron’s state-of-the-art crapper elevates even "nature's call." By 2018 apparently even our dumps will be a cinematic experience if you "really, really believe[d] in money."

Nutting has a great voice and an eye for the numbing and dehumanizing rote of gadgets and modernity. Technology, of course, is just a symptom, not the cause of problems. Tech toys detach us from each other (why bother to converse if you can be immortalized in a meme)...dying mothers would rather have a bucket list bang with a neighbor than spend last weeks with her family. Happily or tragically--pick your POV--Dad and daughter don’t really mind. Dad’s replacement is an android like inflatable named Diane—father and daughter review her perky rack over a six pack. Life’s Kodak moments.

Order a hardcover copy of Made For Love (not the ebook) if only so you put your phone, kindle or computer down for the hours it takes to read it and enjoy. You’ll be amazed at the fun you can have, the emotions (and pages) that can be felt getting lost in a good book.

A delightfully odd trip from the opening sentence to the final page

I've been looking forward to this book all year and it did not disappoint. Alissa Nutting is a genius of the absurd, hilarious and straight up bizarre; she takes a sledgehammer to societal norms and never shies away from uncomfortable taboos.

At 35 years old, Hazel abruptly leaves her psychologically abusive husband Byron Gogol, the multi-millionaire CEO of a monolithic tech company not entirely unlike (you guessed it) Google. With nowhere else to go, she moves in with her septuagenarian father and his newly acquired sex doll—a better alternative than staying with Byron, who has threatened to take control of her entire mind as part of an innovative new experiment.

Meanwhile, a handsome conman named Jasper, who relies on his Jesus-like appearance to scam wealthy women into falling in love with him, has a near-death experience in the ocean one night and from that point forward can only be sexually aroused by dolphins. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

With Byron spying on her move and threatening to harm her loved ones, Hazel grows increasingly desperate to escape his grasp for good. Ultimately Hazel and Jasper's storylines intersect in a surprising but strangely logical way, and it turns out they may be able to save each other.

Made for Love is an delightfully odd trip from the opening sentence to the final page. Nutting's unrelenting strangeness and deviance isn't for everyone, but it is certainly for me. I ate up every last word. Beneath the entertaining absurdity is smart commentary on the intersection between technology and human connection, and a poignant dismantling of the cultural norms we come to expect from stories about love and relationships.

Totally demented and perfectly lovely.

This story is totally demented and perfectly lovely. I'm amazed at how the author made me feel such empathy for two seemingly unlovable protagonists. It even helped me forgive my own shortcomings - a bit.

And - it's a real hoot! Can't wait to read more by this author.

Every inch the soldier, except for the honor part, Sawyer clashes with the deadly slave-master, Cadet Calhoun Brassard, as the Corps of Cadets divide North and South. Brassard and Sawyer savage each other in a wild horserace, slash at vicious saber play, and meet with pistols at dawn in a brutal duel that earns Sidney the first of his unworthy laurels in a lifetime of fraudulent glory. Surviving through treachery with a pistol ball in his breast, Cadet Sawyer becomes West Point’s own ACE OF HEARTS.

Interesting take on Tom Sawyer s brother

Sidney Sawyer, Tom s younger brother, is a unique character. In this volume Sidney goes from childhood to a young man at West Point with many wildly entertaining adventures in between. The history of the antebellum U. S. is incorporated in the book in an interesting way. Ace of Hearts is an excellent blend of humor with historical fiction. The author knows his history. Definitely a good read with quite a few laughs! Try it!

Very true to the historical time frame.

The book is well written and easy to read and understand even though he uses phrases and terms that are appropriate to the time period. I learned about life at West Point in the 1850s, how the issue of slavery divided families and states, and a great deal about life in general at this time. If you like history, especially the Civil War era, you will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!
