One and three-fourths thumbs up from me.

I just got my copy in the mail today and looked page by page through the copyright page - maps. I am already a fan of the original NLT Study Bible - so this is more of a review of this version, rather than the translation or notes.

I will just quickly say, that overall, I do like this edition. It is the most updated NLT text (still NLTse, but updated in 2015). I do prefer the most updated versions, so to me, this is a good thing. I like that John 3:16 says, "For this is how God loved the world..." vs. "For God so loved the world". To me, it makes the meaning clearer, but it doesn't go along with "tradition" which bugs some. The themes all appear the same, with some rearranging of words. I did see a new character profile - Nero - and there may be more. I plan on, of course, spending much more time getting to know this Bible :-)

I LOVE that this version of the NLT Study Bible has FOOTNOTES!!! That was my biggest con about the original NLTSB - the lack of those little asterisk marks to let me know if there was an alternate rendering of a passage. Instead of having to read through all the study notes to see if there MAY be a "literal" or "alternate" rendering for a particular passage - the asterisk is back, as are the footnotes, making reading much easier.

I also really like the subtle shading behind the character profiles and themes. It helps them stand out a bit more without being distracting. The color maps rock, as do some of the charts (such as the pages that clearly show - in a very artistic fasion - what the themes of the Psalms or Proverbs are).

I dislike the very thin pages. I also have an HCSB study bible and wish the NLT would've used that quality of paper. I'd say the paper is the same as the original NLTSB - but feel with all these beautiful colors, a nicer (yet also thin) paper would've made the photos appear more vibrant.

There were also a couple printing errors (a red blob about half the size of a dime on an introduction page, and a blood splatter-esque smear on a character profile...that I had to make sure wasn't intended lol! It wasn't.) Some of the text colors were a little faint - I don't know that yellow on cream colored background was wise. I am easily distracted, and feel that some of the pictures add nothing to the page and are more distracting than helpful. Others were neat and informative - like a colorful double spread of the animals and plants from Israel.

All in all, I think it's a lovely Bible. Nothing is ever perfect and I think this would be a great Bible for anyone. It will be my number 1 choice for new believers in the future!

P.S. It's not red letter edition. That's may be a plus for some of you and a con for others. AND it is very big and heavy. I'm okay with this - I consider it more of a textbook for at home study than a bring to church Bible. It is larger than the original, not by much, but it FEELS like it is. So if you're not a fan of big and chunky, you might want to wait for the personal sized one ;-)

I enjoy reading my Bible but there are many times where I end up reaching for an additional text, such as a Bible Dictionary or Atlas to see if I can find additional information or time lines in regards to what I am reading. This can be a bit daunting and frustrating when losing my place in my reading as I switch from one book to another. It's also a bit inconvenient when I'm trying to juggle two or three books on my lap when sitting either on the couch or in bed. I've often wondered why it is this type of information cannot be put inside the Bible to have all at one place with the corresponding information right there along with the text.

Tyndale House Publishing must have read my mind because that is exactly what they have done with the Illustrated Study Bible. Published in the New Living Translation, this study Bible is over 2500 pages with full colored photographs, easy to interpret timelines and detailed profiles of important people. To say a Bible is breathtaking would normally sound a bit of a reach but is definitely the case with this particular version. The images are vibrant and eye catching, the timelines are easy to understand and Biblical concepts are explained in boxes that accompany the text. Gone are the days of thin onion skin pages of text - this truly takes the Living Word and gives it a whole new life.

This Bible is much much more than just pretty pictures. Within the pages of this one book are several tools that make studying the Bible a simpler process. The front of this version contains an Introduction explaining how the Bible was written, suggestions as to how to study the Bible, and a timeline of Biblical history that illustrated where each book falls in history. Both the Old and New Testament are given lengthy introductions describing canon, worldviews of the time, and other important information useful for understanding the time period. Each individual book has an introduction which explains at what time period the particular book was written, who wrote it, what the main focus is and also key scriptures that are of importance, each accompanied once again with stunning color visuals.

Following the Book of Revelations, pages are dedicated to Hebrew and Greek words studies (much like a dictionary), index to use as a quick reference to finding themes found in the Bible (Anger, Code of Hammurabi, and the Assyrian Invasion for example) as well as another index for looking up key notes such as people or particular words found throughout (ie: Caesar Augustus, blessings, blood atonement). This Bible version then ends with a pretty convenient Dictionary/Concordance combination that while is not a substitute for Strong's Concordance for those who need such an exhaustive reference, it it perfectly acceptable for the average Biblical study.

I found this to be a wonderful Bible and it has quickly become my new favorite Bible.

a great visual Bible
By scott
Bibles have come a long way. Long before the printing press. Hand copied to a changing world of computer printing. But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. Ok on to review. The NLT Illustrated Study Bible I just received today and I am highly impressed with the layout. Think of the NLT Study Bible meets a box of crayons and you have this newer updated version. But on to translation. Many do not like NLT. Many do. My first whole reading of the Bible was in the NLT. I use the ESV for the most part now but have always had an affinity for the NLT for smoothness of language flow. For beginning Christians I think this translation is perfect spiritual milk for taking in the story of the Bible and when more solid food is ready I think the ESV is great. But I think this is a great study Bible introduction for someone new in the faith ready to take a deeper link to scripture and God. The maps are fantastic with themes and profiles that if you owned the older NLT you will be familar with this in this edition. But ive seen some new ones in this edition. If your looking for a great visual study Bible. I give my recommendation.
