Never fear biochemistry again!

Vijay's Undergound Guide cuts right to the chase. For me, biochemistry class was the part of medical school in which I learned the least, mostly because our course was taught very poorly. When it came time for boards, I found myself struggling to learn it because there were no good books available; either they were simply too long and detailed, or they were too short and assumed too much knowledge. Vijay's Underground Guide is the perfect solution - from page 1, it reviews only the most essential topics while somehow maintaining detail. It does so from the ground up, so that memorizing the material becomes much easier. It highlights the relevant points such that the reader doesn't drown in a sea of pathways. Finally, it is compact enough to master, unlike other longer biochemistry books. It is clear that the author possesses not only a deep understanding of biochemistry but also a profound appreciation for the parts relevant to physiology and disease. I highly recommend this book - even if you have finished the boards already and just need to review!

distills information without sacrificing detail

I am a current MD/PhD student at Washington University which I mention because virtually all MSTPs take graduate molecular and cell biology in lieu of medical biochemistry. The outline form of the First Aid biochem section wasn't adequate for me to prepare for the boards. Vijay's guide is perfect insofar as it provides precisely the level of detail needed for boards without droning on.
Biochem questions on the boards often require an exquisite level of detail (rate limiting steps, precise molecular defects for inborn errors of metabolism, etc.). If you invest maybe one day carefully reading this guide (plus subsequent time for self-quizzing), you will be well prepared for the boards.

Excellent guide to medical school biochemistry...

I used Vijay's Guide as the main text for my medical school biochemistry course as well as preparation for the step 1 boards. I highly recommend this book as a primary source for learning biochemistry and metabolic diseases. The information is logically laid out and contains all the information you'll need (or want) to know. After reading this book, you'll feel as though you have mastered biochemistry, and be very well prepared for your course and board exams!
